Yeah. He's been "heavily involved" with scouting as of 2 seasons ago.

Wonder if having the guy who scouted "the next Nieuwendyk" more heavily involved caused any sort of issues with other personnel.

Really gets the noggin joggin'.

I highly doubt it. Weisbrod has been involved in the scouting meetings since Day 1. There was a time when he was the only AGM and Crawford/Brackett reported to him. There's also Delorme and Gradin in the room.

There's also the fact that apart from the European scouts and Delorme and Gradin, there's been quite a bit of changeover in the amateur scouting department since Benning took over. I think Ted Hampson (who is a treasure at this point) is the other lone holdover.

I'm just going off of what was reported recently. In the article talking about Todd Harvey's promotion, it specifically mentioned he had gotten "heavily involved" with amateur scouting.

Yeah. The time for management to have been changed was before all these wholesale changes were made, and if either of them had discontent to that level it would've been expressed well before now.

i kind of wonder whether when benning wasn't fired this spring, he saw a way to scorch the earth and did. so now we are locked in to his new longterm expensive acquisitions and there is no advantage to firing him in the next couple of years.

giving him too much credit?

I didn't think it was news that the Brackett issue was a power struggle between Weisebrod and Brackett.

Classic parasite c-suite exec behaviour for the execs that are awful at their job and make up for it in politics.

and as most of us have seen in one form or another, the smart, competent, conscientious employee then is faced with a choice of either playing stupid games to protect themselves, which makes them less effective at their actual jobs and so the parasite steals their job anyway; or they continue doing their jobs well, and the parasite takes credit for that work.

because stupid bosses are stupid.

I think that it's the other way around. Benning made his argument (whatever it was), ownership greenlighted it, perhaps after exploring other options and outside opinions.

There were reports last offseason that Benning was handcuffed on buyouts due to ownership laying down the law. I can't imagine that he'd buyout Virtanen/Holtby, make the trades that he did as well as have such an active free agency period if ownership wasn't 100% committed.

I have stated that I think that this whole situation really puts the Canucks in a ponderous position. The team absolutely needs to be a contender for the next couple of years. Not a bubble team, not 'just' missing the playoffs. They need to be competing for the division title, because some of the players aren't going to want to stick around for more of the same with Benning or go through an adjustment period with whatever new guy that comes in to try and fix things.

I honestly wish Benning had enough forethought to be this dastardly

you're probably right

and now i find myself wondering what goes behind closed doors in a family where one brother gets to keep lighting his billion dollar toy on fire. like, how did those negotiations go? did another brother get two private jets and first dibs on the secret dinosaur island? what did the third brother get? i can't even comprehend what wanting things looks like at that scale of wealth.

I just picture at family dinners, Paolo and Roberto snickering and teasing Frankie, "how about those Canucks huh?" bragging to Dad, Luigi about how well their portfolios are doing and pointing out the money pit the Canucks have become. Also a "dinner for schmucks" scenario exists where they invite Jim Benning strictly to laugh at him.

You have me picturing that scene in winning Time that 30 for 30 doc. Where Reggie Miller is all proud bragging in the car I started the game put up 30 pst. Sheryl and his dad are giggling. That’s nice Reggie your sister put up 100!

The Vancouver Canucks were 6-10(one each shootout win and loss) in their last 16 games, 50 goals for and 57 against, before COVID-19 shut down sports. Demko was most definitely not “Bubble Demko” at this point in time with his .905 and 3.06, and they had just lost Chris Tanev. I am sure things were just about to swing back the other way though.

Stating facts that cast the Canucks in a realistically bad light, just classic hateful/negative/toxic/bitter behaviour

Demko was starting to come around at the end...Canucks won 2 out of their last 3...Tanev was out , but Brock Boeser was back in...A healthy Boeser and Toffoli could have made some noise..
Canucks hand Islanders seventh straight loss, tie for wild card in West

why is your sample size to say they are coming around 3 games; are you trying to frame things to show what you want it to be?

Cause they had lost 5 of the last 7 games that season so they weren’t coming around; more like your cherry picking stats

heck in the month of March the had 3 losses and 2 wins so no they weren’t turning it around unless you want to cherry pick stats for an agenda

On Feb 22,2020..the Canucks beat the best team in the NHL (Boston Bruins..9-3 score)..That win put the Canucks within 2 points of the Pacific division lead, with 2 games in hand.

Markstrom got injured, and they proceeded to go on an ill timed slump (as young cores have a tendency to do), losing 5 out of their next 6......Slumps don't last forever, and they were clearly working their way out it...winning 2 of their last 3.

My sample size is 61 games..yours is 8.

Maybe the agenda is all yours?

In that 61 game sample size of YOURS weren’t we like 18th in the nhl?

off memory so I could be wrong but doesn’t that go against your point?

You know if you only count the games they got a W they do really well! As long as you don’t look at the numbers which likely show unsustainable special teams and goaltending,

On the plus side, we can't have worse backup goaltending that horse**** "Red Light Holtby" this upcoming season. Don't say I never say anything positive about DimJim management.

I mean, probably?

But Halak fell off a cliff last year - while playing behind a very good defensive team - and if that trend continues behind a worse team, it's far from impossible.
