Yeah I'll give Moe some credit as well.

I liked that there were some wrinkles in our pp units, if we keep that up we should be less predictable and should produce better.

The lines worked and the second pairing looked pretty good.
Still not likening Poolman on the top pairing. Morrissey carried him pretty well tonight after the first but I would like someone steadier that can make a first pass so that Morrissey can be a bit more aggressive offensively.

PK still needs some more polish but hopefully that comes with more reps.

Agreed

Much more comfortable with:

Josh DeMelo

Forbort Pionk

Beau Poolman

Sorry Niku, pro hockey is tough & unforgiving at times. Niku just became my 7-8th Dman if I was PMO. DeMelo no more babies we need you on the ice (jking of course).

I feel for Niku, he had a strong first two periods but then showed his defensive limitations down the stretch. There is skill there but not enough polish defensively. He works hard though it just doesn't translate in his own end.

But yeah get DeMelo back on the top pairing. There was nothing wrong with Beau and Poolman as a third pairing anyhow. I fail to see the need for balanced pairings if you are playing Morrissey nearly 25 minutes a game anyhow.

I WANT bigger minuting of laine. laine only playd 16 min. while even german dude at one line investmenters in edmonton team playing like 30 min !!! i want weight laine for maximum points in scoreboards jumbotrone. but this will never happen at winnipeg! and remeber as said before, he play with like 3rd, 4th line winger, checking winger in stastny. how this work? not good of course. he get no passing at offens zoun from stastny. he need mcuh more, bigger minuting and Center to get and give from. . sheifele playd 27 min. wheelers 23 and so forth. laine must have much more! still very very angry at his career at here and his numbers putted to scoreboards jumbotrone! way way low, and this by brainfarthing holding back by team coaches and stuff!. also not sold at sheifeles centering as for getting points and score goals at his line. he kind of slow and not enough in talent in my eye

I don't think it will be long before Niku drops further down the depth chart. Forbort proved he belonged and was a nice off season pickup by Chevy. BooBoo is more effective even with less offensive skills. Once Samberg and Heinola get more game action I'm guessing Niku gets placed on waivers or is a small add on a bigger trade.

Well one thing is for certain after this whirlwind of a game. Paul Maurice is following covid protocols cause he as well cant find a barber to skirt the rules.

Laine's game winner was heart breaking for the other team.

My quick take:

ESL: Ehlers was flying tonight. If he can play like this consistently we’ll be a dangerous team. He’s such a play driver. I thought Scheifele was pretty good today, especially in the offensive zone. Defensively he was suspect. Wheeler looks like he doesn’t have the wheels (no pun intended) anymore. Constantly looks gassed. The IQ is still there but his body is going. That partial breakaway he had was a joke.

CSL: Connor had a great game. He’s just so dangerous and when Calgary was converging on Laine, Connor was given too much room. If teams keep doing that, one of them will make them pay. I thought Stastny was pretty good. I liked him on the power play too. Laine was absolutely possessed. He was so, so good tonight. Please sign him. If not, at the very least, he’s driving up his trade value. And he out performed Matthews in game one, which is always good.

CLA: Typical good defensive showing by Copp and Lowry, although offensively they weren’t much again. Lowry couldn’t do anything in the offensive zone and Copp had a few chances that he flubbed. Stone hands. Appleton was fast but that’s about it. Not sure he has the skill to become a scorer at the NHL level. I’d try Harkins once he’s healthy. The line didn’t miss Roslovic though.

PTL: I was actually quite impressed with this line. Perreault, other than his dumb penalty, was very tenacious and aggressive. Loved his game. Lewis is a good little player for us. Lots of jump in his game and on the forecheck. Reminded me of Tanev. Thompson was solid, although uneventful, too, I thought.

44-3: Meh. Some egregious gaffes by these two. Morrissey should improve once DeMelo is back (if they ever get to play together). Would also like to try Samberg alongside Josh.

24-4: I though Pionk was much better defensively in this game than he usually was last season. Offensively, the points will come, but he wasn’t brilliant. Surprisingly impressed with Forbort’s play. He seems to be the best out of the Beaulieu/Sbisa/Dahlstrom/Bitetto crop that we’ve had recently. Great play to save that goal, obviously, but just overall very good, especially defensively.

88-8: Beaulieu was uneventful, which isn’t a bad thing. Niku looked really good in the offensive zone. He processes the game so well there. However, I can see why he hasn’t been playing with his defensive play. He had an especially rough third. I’d still like to see more of him though.

Hellebuyck was brutal in the first period but settled in nicely after that. Hopefully that continues.

Overall, a hard fought win, especially given the officiating. Would like to see Hanifin suspended also. Wouldn’t mind taking a peek at Vesalainen or Harkins in Appleton’s spot, and Samberg in Poolman’s.

On to the next one. Which, by the way, why is it so far away? This is a compressed schedule and somehow we have three days off? That won’t be good down the stretch. Go Jets Go.

Quick thoughts...

81-25-29 Dominant game from Laine. He was great offensively, but he was also a force in other areas. If he plays like this all year, he's going to get a king's ransom either in contract or trade return. Stastny was as good as I hoped. Really solid positionally and facilitated well. Connor was dangerous offensively, but he had a couple of awful shifts in his own zone.

27-55-26 Ehlers was flying and made a difference in all three zones. He slowed down a bit by the 3rd period. Scheifele was often toying with the Flames in the offensive zone, but had a couple of brutal shifts defensively. Wheeler looked pretty rusty. I hope it's just his usual slow start.

9-17-22 This line was back to their dominant form. Played shift after shift in the Flames zone. Appleton was the right choice for RW. He adds some speed. Lowry was quick and Copp was a force.

85-11-23 Yikes. Perreault with a dumb penalty. Thompson skates in quicksand. Lewis was fine. At least he can skate.

44-3 This pair struggled at times. Morrissey needs a better partner. Poolman got better as the game wore on.

24-4 Forbort was a pleasant surprise. He made good plays with the puck and didn't get beaten often. Pionk was quite good.

88-8 Yikes! Beaulieu was a tire fire, and Niku joined him in the third period in that category after a decent first and second period. Feel bad for Niku. We even got a dreaded Beaulieu snow angel.

Hellebuyck was meh. Lots of rust and poor puck handling.

If it’s true I don’t think it’s necessarily about Scheifele specifically, but with the best players and with plenty of ice time.
KC and Stastny are certainly up there, and if Maurice doesn’t just play the first line to the ground maybe that’s enough?
But Stastny would need to be signed, can’t get back to not having a 2C. Remember Eakin last season? I’d demand a trade too :P

I'd say Laine and Scheifele don't mesh in a special way. They are good players and they play well together, the way any two good players play well together. I think their styles don't quite match any more, they matched better some years ago but both have developed as players.

Thus far, Laine+Stastny has been better than the sum of the parts but Stastny is not a long-term solution given his age.

I hope we can find a young center with near-perfect skillset to match Laine. Doesn't mean that center needs to be elite tier.

Wheeler was brutal out there, but hopefully that's just him training hard up until the first game. If that is the case, might take a few weeks for him to get back to speed (or at least to better speed).

Poolman will do better in his 3rd line spot and I’ll take all day over Niku. I think you are too hard on Apple. He’s like Tanev.
Connor was awful on back check.

I mostly agree. Poolman should do better with less ice time and easier matchups, and he’s definitely safer than Niku defensively. I didn’t think Appleton was great today but that doesn’t mean Vesalainen or Harkins will be better than him. In any case, he’s quite a bit better than some of the bums we used to employ (think Halischuk, Tangradi, Galliardi, etc.).

I wasn’t paying attention to Connor’s back check, really, but his defensive game in general was suspect. In fact, Laine was quite a bit better defensively, which is really funny when you see all the morons on the main boards call him one dimensional.

I also really like harkins. But think Apple was good. Connor was good in nz and keeping puck in offensive zone but sometimes laine who was further in was back faster than Connor and that’s bad. Liked the physicality in laine game. Only thing Connor has over laine based on that one game is a beautiful contract.

It looks like the Jets could have two dominant first lines if Wheeler can shake off some rust and get going. I like what we potentially have there.

I like our top 6 composition better then any other Canadian team outside of possibly Edmonton due to the two headed monster they have. I will also take our third line over every team in the division.

I agree. And Connor has speed. But man Laine surprised me with that OT rush. I think his skating has really improved.

Okay hear me out for next year...

Copp-Scheifele-Ehlers
Connor-Stastny-Laine
Harkins-Wheeler-Roslovic(?)
Gustafsson-Lowry-Appleton
