Niku was our worst player by a mile

On the other hand Niku had his moments on the offensive zone. But yeah, on d-zone he did look like crap. Esp. on the 1st period which was pretty awful for Jets team defensive play anyway. Situation in front of Helly looked pretty scary like 10 times on the 1st period.

That "save" by Forbort(?) just before 1-1 tying goal was very nice. Looked like sure goal.

Markström was great. Fortunately Laine's laser was able to cut it through, even twice without any lateral movement.

Had the Jets in last after the first, out of the playoffs in the second, in the playoffs in the third and first place after OT!

Ville the Kid and Slamberg should fill in before Niku in the future...
Subtracting Niku and adding DeMelo will help a lot. There's no room on this team right now for a defenseman that can't play defense.
I didn't think Forbort looked as good as most people did...especially handling the puck in his own Zone.

At main board?

Touche!

His quiet defensive game gets overlooked by most people. Solid positioning and defensive IQ is the most overlooked thing for any player so that's not only for Laine. I mean for example, solid defensive defencemen that are not hard hitting bulls like Buff just get overlooked so easily as solid d-plays almost always looks like nothing and so un-spectacular you can get on hockey. Actually if you first misalign yourself on ice and then by huge effort fight yourself back to the position you should have been on the first place, that looks much "better" on Average Joes perspective and might get you on some highlight reel as a positive thing.

It's bit like they say in Finland: a smart guy gets away from a situation where a wise man never ends up. Hopeful the idea is not completely lost on translation.

Holy recency bias batman!. GLAD the Jets won. Im normally a pretty positive guy but let's wait a few ganes before we decide Laine is now officially Ovechkin, Wheeler is a washed up has-been and Poolman and Niku are in over their heads. Lots of promising indicators, some concerns, lets enjoy the win tonight but its still a long season.

I agree on most but Niku was already at a disadvantage since his previous games weren’t good and when u are a bubble player u have a slim margin to show u belong.

I don't think anyone is seriously saying Laine is Ovechkin, but people are praising him appropriately for his efforts which have been pretty consistent since last season, there is no one dimensional Laine anylonger.

I love how the GDT devolved into pessimistic drivel, then went spastic when we put together 60 minutes of better play then the flames.

Let's be honest folks, it was sloppy seconds hockey for most of the game, we just played less sloppy than the Flames.
Critical of a player?
Guess what...this was the first game, no exhibition games...but by all means, fire coaches and trade players.

Man this board has gone to a dark place.

Good win Jerts, next step, a full 90 minute effort. Hopefully after 10 games we'll have found a groove and still be in the plus W column.

Its late and I'm tired. Just a few quick comments.
Laine was almost unrecognizable - in a good way. Where was that long, slow stride? Quicker feet and faster skating. His trade value just went up.

I didn't see anything I really hated, though Hellebuyck was very shaky in the first period.
Niku was not good, but could have been worse.
I liked Connor and Laine together a lot more than I expected to.
The Lowry line was able to get more O zone time at 5v5 than the PP was able to. Archie looked very good there. Roslovic who?
Thompson was not horrible but he was the weakest link on that line. But Maurice loves him.

Is it possible that Maurice was planning on DeMelo having to miss a little time with the arrival of a baby? Is that why Poolman was on the 1st pair all along?

Laine looks like he might take another big step in his development. His skating looks a lot less awkward and he's more assertive in retrieving the puck.

I'm not ready to hit the panic button on Niku yet. These boards have been complaining for 2 years that Maurice won't give him a chance and now so many are ready to write him off after 1 bad game?

Naw Wheelz is still good, he still backs up players on the PP. 8.5 good on D is tough though.

Idle thoughts of an addle'd mind...

Niku... needs more reps... liked the first 2 periods from him...

Lowry is a fourth line center... and one of the best... if the Jets could only get him there...

Fro'Bert... was mostly good... luv'n the Fro'...

Copp and Carrot'Top need a centerman to match their foot speed and guile... waste of their talents presently...

Laine would be worth a 10 mil' long term contract if he played like this most every game...

Oh... and Cilantro... :thumbu:

Life's too short... Buddy says...

If he`d play like this every game he`d get 15M+. Over a 82 game season 164g + 82a... :D

Niku had his chance as the top prospect on D, now there are two guys who are probably ahead of him now and even they don’t slot in yet when De Melo is back!

Niku’s bad game started in 2019 when he got a chance to play D in the Jets, trouble with that was/is are his problems in his own end which is a huge for a D man in the NHL, no?
