Re Poolman.
Just a comment. Some of you spend so much time on this board you don't think for yourselves.
You repeat what others are saying and find comfort in herd mentality. You hated Chiarot who was in my opinion a competent 4/5 D. You gang up on Poolman who probably is a 3/4D.
Lets look at what he does well.
1. Big and strong in front of the net. You are probably blaming him for the Tkchuck tip in goal. You shouldn't. He was all over him. He always uses his size to cover guys in front of the net. Tips happen.
2. Is any Jet Defenseman better at passing out of his own zone?
3. Can he skate and be a threat skating the puck up the ice?
4. Is he a good passer in the offensive zone.
5. Etc. etc. etc.
This guy is a solid NHL defenseman. I hope Seattle does not realize that in the expansion draft.

That was the quickest stop start I have ever seen from Laine, and that bodes well for us.

His weakest part of his game was his acceleration from a standstill, which he may have fixed, and that makes him a very scary player. Add in the fact that when he gets punched in the nose his game seems to go up two or three levels he could dominate this northern division this year.

Show the man his money and let’s lock him up, he’s going to be/ is special.

My kids woke up this morning, his first question is 'Did Laine score?'
He scored, he set up Connor, he went apeshit and tried the fight a load of them then he's scored the winner in overtime.
This Laine turns up every night and it's a game changer. Pomo's gonna have to get the defense tightened up a bit but otherwise there's no limit to how far we go.

....

Thus far, Laine+Stastny has been better than the sum of the parts but Stastny is not a long-term solution given his age.

I hope we can find a young center with near-perfect skillset to match Laine. Doesn't mean that center needs to be elite tier.
...
Perhaps luring Barkov away from Florida to Center Laine wouldn't be impossible? They are friends and have chemistry on International ice, so why not try it out in the NHL?

The Center depth would be incredible after the trade.

I'm not ready to hit the panic button on Niku yet. These boards have been complaining for 2 years that Maurice won't give him a chance and now so many are ready to write him off after 1 bad game?

Exactly my thoughs.

Heinola and Samberg are not banished. They are on ELCs so there is no waiver wire risk. In a shortened training camp with no pre-season games you don't throw away players you don't need to.
My point was they didnt get much of a look before POMO declared Niku a beauty.

I thought Maurice calling the time-out in the second period to give our guys a chance to rest before the 5 on 3 was huge. Then he puts 5 forwards out right after the time-out and Connor scores to tie the game up . I know alot of people hate Maurice but if that was a new coach that we hired in the off season everyone would be praising the shit out of him for those moves . Good game coach. :thumbu:

Wheeler is too old.. Nowdaws he is just medicore 2nd liner. Demote him asap!

You can demote Wheeler alright, but who should play with Scheifele & Ehlers then?

While Wheeler definitely looked slow and gassed from time to time, I think he at least played with smarts and that's not granted. I like the composition of top-6 right now. It's just up to PoMo to play the 2nd line as a 1b (or even 1a) line.

Another possibility would be Ehlers-Scheifele-Laine, Connor-Stastny-Wheeler, but I am not sure if that was the optimal top-6.

Shame on PoMo to start with Fefe & Blake on OT though, but fortunately that did not go south. Those 3-on-3 situations just aren't for slower guys that do not know where their bench is.

Who still thinks Patrik does not take his offseason traning seriously and that he is a bad team mate?

Pretty deadly tandem starting to develop between Connor and Laine.

Solid game from Forbort bye the way, he was a good signing.

Niku should tone down the high risk plays, just make the easy safe play and not try to do too much and not end up making high risk turnorvers like Domi does for Columbus.

Ehlers NEVER gives up solid game again from the danish dynamo.

So add about a minute to his ice-time, and still doesn’t look much different. Horrible compared to Scheifele’s and Wheeler’s ice times.
I Don't have a problem with Scheifele getting extra shifts when we are losing 3-1 but Wheeler can't have that much anymore, he doesn't have the legs, at least right now. Hopefully Wheeler can get stronger as we go .

I agree about Wheeler not being out on the 3 on 3 but not Scheifele, he's our best center. Scheifele, Laine to start would be better at least until Wheeler hopefully gets some legs back.

Definitely Scheifele is the right guy to play 3-on-3. But Scheifele-Ehlers rather than Scheifele-Wheeler.

Maybe they should just play 55&27, 81&29 and then again 55&27, 81&29 until they score. It's only 5 minutes and these guys are young. Morrissey, Pionk as D. At least until Heinola surpasses one of them some day.

Re: Wheeler... Wheels could be on crutches and Maurice will still give him those minutes. Can't believe Chef played 10 more minutes than Laine / Statsny. That's half a period.

That doesn't look right. Glitch in the tracking?
