Re: Wheeler... Wheels could be on crutches and Maurice will still give him those minutes. Can't believe Chef played 10 more minutes than Laine / Statsny. That's half a period.

Scheifele is playing the full 2 minutes on the PP now which will boost his minutes but those are "easy" minutes so I am not concerned. Laine's TOI cwould hae been the same as Connor's and close to Wheeler's had he not been in PB when the Jets went on the PP.

By the end of the game, Morrissey and Pionk were by far our best D...

Forbort's only good play was throwing himself into the goal to save himself from being the goat

Still want DeMelo back in the lineup asap
i saw a lot of solid breakout passes from the zone. nothing fancy. not as smart as Demelo, but not far off. i didn't break down Forbort's zone positioning, but seeing that it didn't stand out like a Niku, i will assume it was good.

That doesn't look right. Glitch in the tracking?

Straight from the NHL box score. It does seem off... was there a shift Chef fell down and couldn't get off the ice for 5 minutes? He did spend 07:06 on the PP and Calgary only had 4 penalties ( including the 5 on 3 ) so it looks like Chef never came off the ice when the Jets had the PP.

Beaulieu looked really bad out there like he was chasing players and unable to overpower anyone in his own end. Niku looked so lost defensively. Definitely not a good impression made there. Cannot wait for DeMelo to return. I hope the Jets roll the same lines but have DeMelo with Beaulieu.
I'm more than happy to sub Beaulieu out of the lineup asap. not really sure what he brings. he's inconsistent.
my favourite shift of his yesterday was when he threw his body around. i've never seen a player not use their mass properly to check like he did yesterday. ran full speed at players along the board and looked like a slice of processed cheese hitting a wall when he contacted them. SPLAT! not BANG!
SPLAT!

anyways, he's a fine placeholder until Heinola and/or Samberg are deemed ready to play. happy to make him our new Sbisa.
i was indifferent about Poolman yesterday. didn't love his zone entries. he's a good 5-6 D-man, but would rather upgrade the talent if possible.
if you're eventually rolling with:
Samberg
Heinola
Morrissey
Demelo
Forbort
Pionk

your bell curve is long and sweepy. you probably have above-average D and can rotate through your 3 lines evenly. you can have Heinola QB the PP. you just don't have a true stud on D, although I'm totally fine of Morrissey's our closest thing to a stud D. he's quietly all-around solid when he's on his game.

So much Laine hype in this thread but Ehlers was the best player on the ice and seems to have taken a step forward. Had good chemistry with Scheifele and generated chances by sheer force of will.

Someone needs to do something about Hanifin, that hit on Connor could have been ugly.

Appleton seem to fit really well with Lowry/Copp.

Pleasantly surprised by the 4th line. Not that they were snapping the puck around but unlike the 4th line to start the last season, I wasn't clenching whenever they were on the ice.

Only one game but Forbort was better than I expected. Would like to see this dcorps once DeMelo is back.

The Jets need to shoot when they are in the slot. Stastny had a chance when he was right in the slot open to shoot but passed it Connor or Laine at the halfwall who had bad angles. Morrissey did the same in a rush with Wheeler.

Since there are an odd number of teams in the division, this will likely happen quite a bit.

Well yea, but EDM will play their 3rd game tomorrow and 4th on same day the Jets get to 2 games. Obviously with covid the scheduling is challenging, just annoying to start the season with 3 days off.

Of course, it’s only one game, but it’s nice to see the Jets at #1 on the xG% charts, even though I think it’s a bit of a silly stat at times.

Re Poolman.
Just a comment. Some of you spend so much time on this board you don't think for yourselves.
You repeat what others are saying and find comfort in herd mentality. You hated Chiarot who was in my opinion a competent 4/5 D. You gang up on Poolman who probably is a 3/4D.
Lets look at what he does well.
1. Big and strong in front of the net. You are probably blaming him for the Tkchuck tip in goal. You shouldn't. He was all over him. He always uses his size to cover guys in front of the net. Tips happen.
2. Is any Jet Defenseman better at passing out of his own zone?
3. Can he skate and be a threat skating the puck up the ice?
4. Is he a good passer in the offensive zone.
5. Etc. etc. etc.
This guy is a solid NHL defenseman. I hope Seattle does not realize that in the expansion draft.

Most every Jet dmen is better at passing it out of his end. His Microstats were bottom of the league in terms of controlled zone exits last year and there wasn't much improvement seen last night. He telegraphs were he is going pass quite badly and top opposition quickly closes it down.

Poolman is a UFA so doesn't need to be protected and can sign with anyone.

Poolman is a useful defenseman but needs to be played in an appropriate role on the third pairing to really be effective. There is nothing wrong with that especially from a late round draft pick.

Well TBF in the third Laine was double shifted. At least it looked like that.

Maybe second line will play more next game.

So add about a minute to his ice-time, and still doesn’t look much different. Horrible compared to Scheifele’s and Wheeler’s ice times.
He was in the penalty box for almost 5 minutes, due to the 4-minute penalty he received at the end of the second period. This meant he not only missed the powerplay, he missed about 2-3 other shifts. Wheeler and Scheifele also started the OT, and got another 50 seconds of ice time, where Laine scored early on his shift.

ESW took 1 1:04 shift on 5v5 during the time Laine was in the penalty box. After Laine got out of the box he didn't get on the ice even when it was an offensive zone faceoff. Lowry's line did.
