I wonder how many Canadian teams will be in the league 20 years from now. If guys don’t want to play in Alberta, Winnipeg, or Ottawa that puts them at a disadvantage.

Would’ve been a good trade for the Senators had Cat signed with them. Now it looks terrible. Happy Cat got a payday though and don’t mind at all that he’s a Red Wing now
It's often only an issue with American players not wanting to play in those cities.

Its not just Ottawa, its Calgary as well & prior to McDavid, Edmonton too.

They often say guys have NTC and it contains all 7 Canadian teams.
No one said it's just Ottawa when it comes to players not wanting to play in the cities. It's only Ottawa that struggles with attendance.

Ottawa is the only team to worry about when it comes to support from fans. And that probably has to do more with their location than the players left on their team.

Disagree

Winnipeg is the one to worry about

As expected now that initial enthusiasm has worn off, they are struggling to sell tickets. They are bailed out by rich owner willing to take hit but if he decides at some point to move on in future then Winnipeg could be next crisis situation for league

Winnipeg issues are proving the "Just put a team in Canada and its guaranteed to sell out" nonsense to rest.

Winnipeg is at 94% capacity for the most recent year. Around the same as DET and LA, more than COL, CGY, NJ, PHI, OTT, ANA, FLA, CHI, BUF, and SJS.

Doesn't Winnipeg have the second smallest rink in the league? And it's not even just about selling tickets it's corporate sponsorship which is a huge deal. No idea how Winnipeg does in that department.

The Jets have lost 3,000 season ticket holders and sold out just 5 of 41 games this past year

The model for Jets to succeed because of how small building is requires max capacity attendance which isn't happening right now. They have also struggled to get sponsorship as Winnipeg business community has had to tighten budgets, etc over recent years and is already one of the smallest if not smallest corporate pools.

The owner of Jets has been sounding alarm in recent months on situation and its major reason why they won't rebuild.

Rebuild would mean thousands less season ticket holders and more empty seats

Problem also is that Winnipeg is against a rebuild even though they very well should with Scheifele, Wheeler, and Helly all wanting out. They really gonna expect Kyle Connor and bunch of people picked up from a gas station and have fans want to watch a mid team? lol

Yes, which is why I used capacity.

I didn't realize Winnipeg lost so many season tickets, but yeah, they would be the only other team to worry about.

Lies, damn lies and statistics. Winnipeg sold a higher capacity % than the Hawks. The Hawks still averaged over 2k more real actual tickets sold than the Jets can seat.

Yes, but they have always had a smaller arena, so using capacity for arguments sake makes sense when talking about how they are faring now to when they came into the league.
