Honest question, with the how Toews career played out after his peak, is he a HOF for you, in how you view the HOF? Obviously we all know he is getting in the HOF. 3 cups, Captain Canada, international play, etc etc. I think he probably gets in MY SELECTED HOF, but its a lot closer than I thought it would be in 2016 or 2017.

I think years from now when people look at his stat sheet, they'll be wondering why he was such a celebrated player.

But it really does come down to the infamous intangibles.

Depends how if people eventually start seeing the low scoring era being from 95-18 with just the 3 post lockout years breaking it up .

He was the epitome of a captain, leader, and big game player. Dominant 1C on 3 Cup winning teams and a Smythe winner.

I was expecting more from him post 2015 but things just didn’t shake out that way. The seven years prior though he gave us his best and hated to lose. HoF player through and through

He'll get in, but he shouldn't.
Dany Heatley had a better peak and nobody thinks he's a HOF.

This is probably an unpopular opinion on this board but Toews is still a Hawks legend regardless of whether or not he gets into the HOF. But objectively, he did not have the longevity.

Lol, Dany Heatley won 1 individual award in his career (ROY), and 1 team award. (Olympic Gold)

If Toews had retired before he became a replacement level player for a few years, and then a below-replacement-level player for the last two, would you still be against his HOF candidacy?

I’m not a big fan of his, but he was a crucial member of three championship teams. I think that should be enough for any HOF candidate BECAUSE A HOF SHOULD BE MAINLY ABOUT CHAMPIONS.

My main problem with Toews is he had a negative effect on roster decisions before his decline became obvious and thus hurt the Hawks in ways that don’t show up on the stat sheet. I’m not sure he should be penalized for that though.

Toews was never a replacement level player, let alone worse than one. Even after covid he was worth more than league minimum.

Toews is going to be in HOF

His NHL + International resume is more then enough

He will be viewed like Neely and others before him who were on way to easy HOF careers until injuries (In Toews case Illness) became factor

That's actually fair.

The point that I was making about Heatley is that he scored 50 goals and 100 pts twice and Toews never did that.

It’s borderline though.

3 cups. 1 Smythe. 1 Selke. Almost 900 points

That wasn't the question though, my question was, would he make your hall?

Toews will absolutely make the hall but he wouldn't make mine. Kevin Lowe getting in made any admission defendable though.
Yeah, my hall its probably a no after more thought process. Checking his resume other than the 3 cups, its really not that great.

In which scoring era was Toews on his entire prime and healthy career? What offense numbers guys did those 2 years post lockout are based on insane powerplay numbers.

All but Toews rookie year and last pre-covid year he had a lower scoring era and a defensive first coach.

Change “player” to “first line center“. The huffin, puffin and outta gas Toews of last season was at some points not only not a “replacement-level first-line center” but also not a “replacement level player” because he couldn’t even hack the pace of the game. You miss that?

No I complained about that shit incessantly honestly lol. He still put up more points than a true replacement level player like Entwhistle or Reese Johnson ever could and was one of the best at faceoffs still.

I agree with the rest of your original post though, he'll get in for being one of the best players in the league during his prime who was a huge part of three Stanley Cups. Its pretty easy to hand wave his last couple seasons away due to his declining health.
