Forsling is a perfect example of why it takes most Dmen a while to reach their potential. As a rookie, he looked like a guy who would pack it in and return to Europe to play an easier game.
Oddly enough, I remember that Quenneville didn’t really like him, and didn’t play/trust him much. Then Q goes to Florida, Florida acquires Forsling, and suddenly he’s playing more.

Q was major supporter of Forsling from moment he arrived and was playing him in all situations

It was after coaching change that Forsling's tenure with Hawks went off rails and he was gone after just part of season under JC

Never played more than 43 games in a season for the Hawks.

He was 19. He wasn't expecting to make the club, then did because Q loved his game. Q used him as a defensive maychup guy a lot. I think his 2nd year it was Forsling-Ruuta doing that well until Ruuta hit hurt.

He just had the mixup of needing to also play Kempny then Campbell at LD. But Forsling seemed to be his favorite while Kempny was the one he was always punishing despite being older and having better stats.

He was almost 23 by the end of the 18-19 season. Too young to give up on, but still only getting into half of the games. Q sat him 50% of the time.

Q actually did like Forsling. Colliton did not. He had injury history early. He was actually one of my favorite hawks prospects ever and reminded me of a young Hammer. I watched his SHL games all the time. I hated that we got rid of him.
Colliton really wasn't very good and probably set the team back.

Forsling also missed start of Q's final season and didn't come off IR until a few games after he was fired

If he hadn't been injured he would have been playing for Hawks

Yeah Colliton was a garbage coach and wasn't ready for the big time, I think he'll probably get back in the league and succeed though.

He'll get back because it's the NHL and once you're in you're in for life but he wants to coach a system few teams have the horses to play.

I never figured out what his system was even supposed to be. Not even trying to be facetious. I remember asking on our board as well.

Some combo of zone and man in the dzone that had everyone scrambling around. Then on offense it felt like we had all of our lines except for Kane and DeBrincat stuck to the perimeter making low % plays/shots.

He wanted to play positionless hockey. Every coach at every level does. The problem is you need six intelligent mobile defenders with puck skills and twelve intelligent defensively responsible forwards that can skate.

At this level it works great if you are making up Team Canada. Practically it's just not possible.

In theory you have six Lindstrom's playing with twelve Federov's. Good f***ing luck making that work.

38, 41, and 43 games per season in 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19 respectively. Quenneville was fired in November 6 2018, Forsling’s first game was 11/14/18, so the last season Forsberg played for the Hawks Colliton was completely responsible for his playing.

Forsling was traded to the Hurricanes in the deHaan deal, and played 2019-20 with the Carolina Checkers. Not one game in the NHL.

Quenneville was hired by the Panthers and coached the 2019-20 season. The Panthers aquired Forsling off waivers from the Canes on January 9, 2021. Total games for Forsling??? 43...not bad for missing the first half season because of the Covid lockdown. Quenneville resigned from Florida on October 28, 2021. Forsling played his first full season with 71 games in ‘21-’22, mostly under Paul Maurice.

I stand by my original statement. Quenneville was never on board with Forsling until 2021.

A lot of teams have shifted their philosophy on that though. Like the D being deep in the zone is relatively new. Couple years or so.

I think the dynamic of him being so young and fresh and the opposite of Q made it more jarring for the players. Also the roster was just bad.

Forsling upon being claimed off waivers and put on NHL roster was played 21:31 in game #1 for Panthers the 3rd most for a Panther D

It's very clear the Panthers got Forsling because Q wanted him and as soon as he was on roster Q went back to him heavily. He then got injured and came back and spent rest of year getting consistently heavy minutes for Panthers and finished year nearly 20 minutes TOI and being used in all situations (1 goal lead, etc, etc)

Q again clearly was his biggest supporter bringing him to Florida and Q it can rightly be claimed probably saved Forsling's NHL career as Canes didn't even give him look and other teams passed on him on waivers

It was very likely Forsling was a player in the Q/Bowman feud on philosophy of team. The fact Bowman dumped Forsling and Joker as a result of JC says enough about situation with regard to Bowman and his view of Forsling/Joker. Both Joker/Forsling success elsewhere is damning of Bowman and his overall view towards defenders especially at draft. Joker was best Bowman D draft pick and he threw him and Forsling away because of the idiot he hired as HC

Also, in Florida it was Q who put Weegar in bigger role when previous coach (Boughner) didn't view him as more then a bottom pairing defender and scratched him at times

Weegar like Forsling became someone Q relied on in increased role which allowed him to establish himself as a top 4 defender

Pure speculation.

Well it worked in a 3rd level Swedish league

I dont know how you can break it down by this. Just by Qs comments and actions it was clear he praised Forsling. He wasn't supposed to be a guy making it out of camp, but Q praised him and played him

Q used him in defensive matchup pairs, which usually only happened when he liked and trusted you. Q didn't push like he was the finished product, but he was clearly at that time a young player Q liked.

You just need a team that can skate to play that way. The Hawks roster was slow as f***, and lazy. So it was doomed from the start.

He will end up having a successful coaching career elsewhere, is my guess.

The stats don’t lie. Quenneville didn’t play him one game to start the 2018 season. While with the Hawks, Forsling (understandably) wasn’t a full time defenseman. Young and not completely ready. It’s obvious he wasn’t completely trusted, as he only played half the games. Not a crime at that age, but let’s not pretend he was something he wasn’t when he was with the Hawks.

Anything else is speculation and projection by some posters here, unless you can supply quotes.

Forsling was given the chance at Florida when claimed off waivers after spending a full year with the Canes‘ AHL affiliate. In fact, I’m willing to speculate that he benefited more in that organization, which has produced far more high end NHL defensemen than the Hawks over the past decade. He did well with Q the second time, then took off under Maurice.

He's already stated to have been hurt then

I dont know what this weird hill is. But yes, on all accounta Q really liked Forsling and rushed him to the NHL when he wasn't ready because be really liked him.

I dont know what misrecollection or point you're trying to make. It was no coincidence the Panthers claimed him. Q really liked him right away, but he wasn't ready for the NHL so be didn't play every game. That doesn't mean Q didn't really like his game.
