Flavian beats my first time starter at 11-1.....He's becoming a must include in multi race bets at the spa.

Would love to see his ROI this meet.

This story has been percolating throughout the day, TVG is becoming Fanduel TV. Big news for the sport although I suspect ultimately there will be less racing on the actual cable network.

Third win of the day for Flavian...Sweeps the double just now on a 11-1 and 5-1.

My initial impression is international racing will suffer but North America racing during the days and into the nights will remain the same. I haven't fully looked into it, however. Apps remain TVG from what I saw elsewhere.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $17 million.
  • Flavien Prat won on board his first three mounts and ended with a 4-win day. He has made quite the impression in his initial Saratoga meet.
  • Chad Brown won three races. Todd Pletcher won twice early and crept within three of Brown's lead among all trainers this meet; however. Brown won three of the final four races to pull ahead by six.
  • Race 9: Gina Romantica (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the $135,000 Riskaverse Stakes at 14-to-1. Gina Romantica was purchased for $1,025,000 in 2020. She has alternated wins and losses in five career starts with earnings of $156,000. Brown finished 1-2 in this race (also fourth) and the all-Brown $1 exacta returned $130.50.

  • Race 8: Precursory (John Velazquez/Bill Mott) gave the jockey his 1,000th all-time win at Saratoga. The Hall of Famer is tops in that category. Velazquez is nearing 6,439 wins lifetime, 11 away from 13th best all-time in North America.

  • Race 6: Beside Herself (Flavien Prat/Todd Pletcher) wired the field at 8-to-1. Distance of a 1.5 mile marathon is rare enough but to wire-the-field is even more impressive and uncommon.

  • Race 4: Western Ghent (Jose Gomez/Wayne Lukas) won by a head at 13-to-1. The jockey is 21 years of age. The Hall of Fame trainer will be 87 years of age a week from tomorrow.
  • Race 2: Dontlookbackatall (Flavien Prat/Christophe Clement) debuted to a nice win at 11-to-1. All entered were 2-year-old fillies making debuts. The $1 exacta returned $418 when a 47-to-1 shot finished with a furious rally and placed.

  • Kendrick Carmouche was off his mounts today due to illness.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Race 5: Three across-the-wire within mere seconds of a doozy in Saratoga's fourth. With so little competition, tracks need to address posts so close to one each other. Two tracks in Ohio in addition to Delaware and Saratoga were the few betting interests ongoing.
Del Mar (California):
  • Races 1 and 2: Jonathan Wong, winning trainer.
  • Race 2: Sally's Sassy (Ricardo Gonzalez/Jonathan Wong) debuted to a 12-to-1 win. Mi Mimita (Jose Valdivia. Jr./Rasharn Creque) entered from Gulfstream and placed at 27-to-1. I don't recall Creque leaving Florida too often in recent years. From what I can find, the last time prior to this Del Mar meet he had a horse run outside of Florida was at Santa Anita in 2017 and that was a graded stakes. The top two horses formed two of the longest odds in a field of nine.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Races 1 and 2: Slade Jones, a 16-year-old rider from Barbados, won the first two races on the card.
  • Race 3: Galway Waters (Josh Scott/Daniel Vella) was the longest shot on the board at 19-to-1 and won as the only first-time starter -- a favorite betting technique (lone first-time starters at odds) that rewards handsomely. Scott won a TB race for just the second time. He was riding QHs at Ajax Downs (ON).
  • Pick 6:. For a successful $.20 bet, the winner received $113,000+.

My initial impression is international racing will suffer but North America racing during the days and into the nights will remain the same. I haven't fully looked into it, however. Apps remain TVG from what I saw elsewhere.
They’re going to have a full morning show with Kay Adams, so a lot of that early morning racing will almost definitely be exclusive to the app. I don’t think TVG has people on until 11am eastern so there is a lot of room to utilize that time.

I am in the midst of reading articles. I generally rely on live streams from track websites/simulcast facilities since that is a far superior product to TVG. However, many handicappers find TVG convenient and understandably so. I have never heard of Kay Adams, then again I don't follow the NFL.

This is part of the FanDuel press release issued today:

FanDuel TV's programming schedule will be underpinned with the best live coverage from the top tracks including Gulfstream, Del Mar, Keeneland, Pimlico, Santa Anita and many more.
I assume that means for the opening month. Pimlico runs two brief meets in 2022 and is dark about 10 months of the year. As much as I love Maryland racing, "a top track" is very debatable for Pimlico and though it is historic, Laurel is the state's workhorse.

NYRA and Churchill aren't listed which means contractual obligations and/or disputes like that of the recent past.

I am not sure if the timing of the transition involves Kentucky Downs' popular meet, but that is the number one handicapper's track annually in terms of takeout percentage field size, purse structure, quality and European style racing.

Separately, Oaklawn's omission is glaring.

What is happening to TVG2?

NYRA can't do anything right so I'm not surprised to see them not working on an agreement with TVG/Fanduel TV.

I stream Saratoga live through my youtube app on the smart TV since my cable provider doesn't carry FS2 in HD. Beyond that stupidity having to change between SNY, FS1, and FS2 throughout the card is ridiculous.

NYRA never has dealt with TVG/Fanduel.... it's why Fox Sports exists but can TVG/Fanduel battle NBC Sports and Fox Sports because NBC already has lost Belmont to Fox, then we have the battle over Laurel vs. Pimlico for the Preakness and the top track in Maryland and then there's Churchill/Twin Spires. TVG/Fanduel is an extra charge on most cable systems even if a Comcast (XFINITY) or a Charter (Spectrum) even offer the channel/network.... personally, I'd like to see RTN be a linear channel offered as those ads are already played....

  • Steve Asmussen trained four winners across five tracks in five states. He finished the day 12 4-1-1. He has 9,871 (most in No. America history) in his career and needs 129 to reach the magical mark of 10,000.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Roughly $17 million.
  • Weather: Two storms interrupted proceedings and the card turned into a disappointing effort. Although better today than tomorrow for the inclement weather.
  • Card: 11 races of which five were stakes, one a handicap and two MSW.
  • Race 1: Maple Leaf Mel (Joel Rosario/Jeremiah Englehart) handled the wet track with ease. Two wins in two starts and today a stakes winner. Bill Parcells (August Dawn Farm) has a nice filly.

  • Race 10: Reduced to a field of three and a shortened distance after being removed from the turf due to the rains that affected much of the day.

  • The Ortiz Brothers: Jose had three wins and Irad had two victories. Jose was 5 3-2-0.
  • Dylan Davis returned from a 7-day suspension and had a winner.
  • Leading Jockey: Irad Ortiz, Jr. has a 12-win advantage over his closest challenger -- Luis Saez. Ortiz will serve a 3-day suspension prior to the meet's closing day on Labor Day.
  • Leading Trainer: Chad Brown has a 6-win lead over Todd Pletcher.
Timonium (Maryland):
  • Opening Day: Timonium (state fair) runs August 26-September 5. Pimlico goes September 9-September 25. Laurel is dark until September 30 and likely runs into April though 2023 race dates are yet confirmed.
  • Graphics: Rockin' the old-school colors of yellowy-orange, black and white similar to what Laurel displayed for years prior to the pinkish switch by the Stronach Group. Very nice.

Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Race 4: Vintage Print (Gerardo Corrales/Paulo Lobo) was a $1.8 million purchase by former Boston Scientific exec Larry Best for his OXO Equine. The horse has met with minimal success having earned just over $126,000 through 11 races as the day began but today won for the 4th time. Sent off the favorite, the 5-year-old gelding looked very professional in victory.
  • Steve Asmussen trained two winners.
Charles Town (West Virginia):
  • Handle: $6.4 million. That is unofficially the second highest in track history and perhaps in the state.
  • Card: 13 races highlighted by the $1,000,000 Charles Town Classic. Nine of the races were stakes. Approximately 6 1/2 hours of racing tonight.
  • Visiting Riders: John Velazquez, Javier Castellano, Tyler Gaffalione, Luis Saez, Eric Cancel and Jon Court, Eleven different riders won on this card.
  • Trainers: Wayne Lukas, Bill Mott, Steve Asmussen, Graham Motion, Michael Stidham and Saffie Joseph were among the many prominent trainers who shipped., Twelve different trainers won tonight.
  • Luis Saez-Bill Mott teamed twice and both won.
  • Race 13: The long evening ended around midnight when the 2 was DQ'd for the 8. Post time for the finale was 11:35 pm. First race was off at 5:07 pm ET.
  • Race 12: Art Collector (Luis Saez/Bill Mott) wired the field as the 1-to-2 favorite to win the Grade 2 $1,000,000 Charles Town Classic Stakes. Art Collector is 19 10-1-0 and has earned over $2,300,000. The 5-year-old son of Bernardini has won five of his last six starts in the U.S. including winning the race in 2021.

  • Race 11: Society (Tyler Gaffalione/Steve Asmussen), sent off the favorite, won the Grade 3 $500,000 Charles Town Oaks by more than six lengths. Society is a 3-year-old daughter to the immensely talented Gun Runner and entered off her only loss in what is now five starts.

  • Race 10: Sir Alfred James (J.D. Acosta/Norman Cash) won the $250,000 Russell Road Stakes. Cash, the trainer, finished 1-2 in the race. Wondrwherecraigis (Luis Saez/Brittany Russell) was sent off the 2-to-5 favorite but flattened and finished a disappointing fourth.
Golden Gate (California):
  • Opening Day: The meet concludes October 2. Fresno (fair) runs October 7 - October 16. GGF returns October 21 - December 11.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: Over $12 million.
  • Race 3: Carmel Road (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert) won the $80,000 MSW in convincing style, out for the second time. The 2-year-old son to Quality Road was purchased for $650,000 by a conglomerate. Quality Road won eight times in 13 starts and earned over $2 million. He was on the Triple Crown trail in 2009 and may have gone off the favorite in the Kentucky Derby had it not been for a leg injury; the Virginia-bred has turned into a good sire.

Strange circumstances involving Tyler Baze and his inability to resume riding at DMR. Blood pressure medication administered to him prevents his from passing a drug test.

Baze on Aug. 15 was given a medication when his blood pressure temporarily spiked, owing to stress or anxiety. He does not have chronic hypertension. He was given a drug that acts fast to becalm a person. But Baze cannot have even a trace of that medication in his system in order to get on horses. The doctor who gave him the medication that day said it would be gone in one to three days -- in time for him to resume riding, in theory, on Aug. 18 -- but there are instances where the medication has stayed in a person's system long past that timeline, and Baze apparently is one of those outliers.

Weather for Saratoga this Saturday appears to be cloudy with a very light chance of a shower. Maybe ideal racing weather for the Travers card which is arguably of one the two biggest racing days for New York. My estimate for handle today is $50 million.

Great card today as well. I'd argue for 2022 this is the best NYRA racing day of the year.

Junior Alvarado doesn't get too excited often but he was in a celebratory mood after that shocker. The Graveyard of Champions and a 1-to-9 goes down.

My prediction was met and passed.

A toothpick couldn't be squeezed into the Spa today. An energy and vibe that is beyond compare. The prior mark was $52 million+. It was stated here before opening day that this meet would be something extraordinary based not only on anticipation but excitement. The brilliance of the equine athletes and the named connections met the buzz of the audience from Day One. The weather has been mostly cooperative, too. Seven additional race days remain for Saratoga 2022. Our sport is flourishing.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $55,559,315 bet is the most for any Saratoga card in history. On track handle was 10% higher than 2021.
  • Meet Handle: $705 million is the record high for Saratoga and that will be shattered at some point prior to Labor Day when the Spa closes shop.
  • Paid Attendance: 49,672 is the highest since 2015.
  • Travers Card: As stated, annually one of the most important days in New York racing and this card had a flair for the exceptional. Six races were graded stakes.

  • Joel Rosario rode four winners. He also set a Saratoga meet record with 12 graded stakes wins.
  • Jose Ortiz had his second straight 3-win day.
  • Jose Lezcano-Linda Rice teamed twice and both horses returned victorious.
  • Chad Brown entered 16 horses in 8 races and finished 16 2-2-2.
  • Winning Jockeys and Trainers: Only six riders won today while 11 trainers were victorious.
  • Race 11: Epicenter (Joel Rosario/Steve Asmussen) won the Grade I $1.25 million Travers Stakes. Epicenter is 10 6-3-0 lifetime and has earned over $2.9 million. Epicenter was sent off the favorite in the Kentucky Derby but finished second. He is a leading candidate for 3-Year-Old Horse of the Year.

  • Race 10: Gufo (Joel Rosario/Christophe Clement) won the Grade I $750,000 Sword Dancer and with it received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup. Gufo is 19 9-3-5 and has earned more than $1.9 million including winning this race in 2021.

  • Race 9: Malathaat (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) won the Grade I $600,000 Personal Ensign Stakes. The 4-year-old daughter to Curlin has amassed over $2 million lifetime with a mark of 12 8-3-1.

  • Race 8: Jack Christopher (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) won the Grade I $500,000 Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes. The 3-year-old son to Munnings is 6 5-0-1 and is officially a millionaire at $1.2.

  • Race 5: Cody's Wish (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) rallied strongly at 8-to-1 to win the $600,000 Grade I Forego Stakes and improve to 10 6-1-3. Upset was Jackie's Warrior (Joel Rosario/Steve Asmussen) who was sent off the lowest odds possible at 1-to-9 and who was 4 4-0-0 lifetime at the Spa as part of a record of 16 12-1-1. Alvarado's dirtied face was the epitome of a jockey on an off-track. He respected the speed duel in front and took advantage of the remnants. The horse is a homebred son to Curlin owned by magnate Godolphin.

1661646138855.png
  • Race 4: Technical Analysis (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) was sent off the overwhelming favorite and won the $400,000 Grade 2 Ballston Spa Stakes.
  • Race 1: Verifying (Joel Rosario/Brad Cox) was sent off the favorite and wired the field in the opener. A $775,000 son to Justify from what looks like Irish-based owners.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 9: Lost Ark (Javier Castellano/Todd Pletcher) won the $200,000 Sapling Stakes. The 2-year-old son to Violence was out for the second time and likely has graded stakes material.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Augusto Marin had two rides and was nearly a perfect 2-for-2. He won Race 4 at 15-to-1 as the longest shot on the board. He won the eighth race and had his picture taken....until a very lengthy objection removed him from the win and placed him last. With a 40-to-1 shot on top, the $.10 super paid close to $6,000.
  • Jaime Rodriguez finished 7 4-2-1. He teamed with Jamie Ness to win three times.
  • Jamie Ness went 6 4-1-1. Ness was suspended last week by the Pennsylvania Racing Commission from Sept. 5 through March 3, 2003 for a medication violation.
Timonium (Maryland):
  • Handle: $573,359 may not sound like much -- even if the State Fair -- but that is 17.2% better than 2021.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Leonel Reyes rode three winners. I mentioned prior to the 2021-22 Championship Meet that he had the ability to bring home considerable prices but this may be a breakout meet for him. He is second -- a distant second -- to Miguel Vasquez this meet for wins but certainly worthy of a note. In his mid-30s and a champion rider in Venezuela, he is having the best year of his U.S. career.
Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Brad Cox sent out three horses and two won. He had a 3-win day across various tracks today. He is the defending Trainer of the Year in North America.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: $21 million.
  • Race 9: Laurel River (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the $250,000 Grade 2 Pat O'Brien Stakes and with it received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup. Laurel River won a graded stakes for the first time and is 4 3-0-0 at DMR as part of a record of 7 4-1-0. The 4-year-old colt is a son to Into Mischief. Baffert won this race for the eighth time which is more than any other trainer.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Justin Stein rode four times and three returned as winners.
