I still say if this season doesn’t work out, you loan him to a Swiss team next year and eat next years cap hit. We aren’t winning the Cup next year. Then maybe he gets his head on straight in Switzerland away from everything. I don’t want him on the books until 2030.

Elvis is teaching a masterclass in how to think if you want to be fragile. Unrealistic goals and a battle with your haters. There are going to be rough times, bad goals let in, how do you keep your calm? It appears there will be no calm.

I have to agree. As a goalie myself, it sounds stupid but the key to playing your best is to not give a single f***. If he is actually thinking about all of these things instead of just worrying about being ready physically for the game and mentally living in the moment you are going to have a bad time.

The best thing he can do is understand he has already made his money and lived his dream and the worst case scenario is he is set for life having done both. The haters don't matter. Play loose and free.

Easier said than done, as it was when I started getting recognized for my ability I felt the pressure to perform and struggled to find that mindset. But I am also not a pro goalie with the resources to overcome it.

League is filled with these goalies.. Look at Jack Campbell. Dude can be an AHLer one day and a Vezina goalie the next. Goaltending is mental

you're right, but at the same time that's actually exactly what elvis said he's doing

This summer, I changed mentally. But I got tired of listening to other people say how I should be or how I should act. I’m going to come back and I am already back to the Elvis that I am. I’m gonna be cocky and arrogant like I was when I showed up here, when I really didn’t give a s— about other peoples’ opinions.

the gist of the interview is that he's trying to use the mentality he had when he first came here, i.e. being himself, not caring about what people say, and playing instead of thinking.

i get that he's said it before, and that his play has made him a magnet for criticism, but we went from "elvis cares too much about the haters" to elvis saying he doesn't care about the haters and people somehow got even more upset with him.

And those are the exact voices he needs to not give a shit about. Not ignore, it's impossible to fully ignore. You need to not care what those guys thinks because how he is doing it is how he knows he needs to.

If he is really in that mindset, I think he will have a big year. I haven't had a chance to watch CBJ pre-season games to know how he is playing but I will be watching a lot of games with you guys this year and I am excited to see how he does.

yeah it's just funny that people took elvis literally saying "i do not care about the haters" as him somehow saying that he actually does care about the haters simply because he mentioned them.

there was also the reddit comment that was like "wow look at all these times he's said the same thing" but didn't point out that the interviews were actually pretty different:
  • the first was from december and was basically him saying "i suck right now" and talking about how he thinks about the haters all the time
  • the second one (late feb) came after he strung together a few good games and was talking about how he felt like himself again during those games
  • the third one was from his exit interview where he said he was going to work hard this offseason (literally every player says this)
  • the fourth one was from the middle of the offseason and was him saying that he felt his hard work was paying off (physically)
  • this most recent interview was about his mindset and that he was tuning out the outside noise – a stark contrast from the first two interviews where he kept talking about wanting to prove everyone wrong
just kinda funny that this interview (which reads very differently from the others) got spun by the fans as being identical to the others. it's just discourse for the sake of discourse at this point.

If he is really in that mindset, I think he will have a big year. I haven't had a chance to watch CBJ pre-season games to know how he is playing but I will be watching a lot of games with you guys this year and I am excited to see how he does.
i know elvis was really close with legace (how could they not be after what happened?) but i do think that the coaching played a bigger role than most realize in terms of his decline.

when elvis first got here, he was CHAOTIC in the net, but very effectively so. he would aggressively play pucks and leave his crease and challenge the shooters. he wasn't thinking; he was playing. last year he let in a lot of soft goals where he either lost focus or was overplaying an angle or didn't react fast enough.

i think they coached a lot of the aggressiveness out of his game (or tried to) and that caused him to get in his head and think too much about technique, lose focus, or play too tentatively. factor in the kivi trauma and the pressure from the haters and the fact that it was the first time in his life he's really struggled in the net, and it's not hard to see how things could spiral.

that's not to say that he's going to revert to his old form this year, but i don't think a turnaround was possible with legace as the goalie coach.

I mean even something in the middle is fine. It's unlikely he will be .923 goalie year in and out that is rare in the NHL. But if he can meet in the middle of that and south of .900 and give .910-.915 I think everyone takes that. It gives the team a chance to win every night.

That’d be enough , with key saves, of course.

I've never understood why players who are going through bad times read media or social media. He shouldn't even know who his detractors are. Let his agent filter through the garbage and only bring it to Elvis if it's absolutely essential.

It appears to be a universal trait that people obsess over what others say about them. In Texier's recent interview he talked about being very upset with what people were saying about him when he left the team.

No doubt about that.

For the delicate psyches of Texier and Elvis, it would be advisable for them not to read stuff. They don't seem to take it as fuel for the motivational fire but are just hurt by it.

If I were a veteran on the team, I'd play hardass with them and tell them that it's none of their business what other people think of them. It really isn't. Especially when you're in the public eye.

I agree but I honestly don't think it's possible to avoid in today's world, even if you didn't have social media. Imagine if the content was about you, I'm not sure it'd be possible to use the Internet without seeing it or people in your life telling you about it.

What are you talking about. NHL players aren't real people with feelings and they don't actually have emotional events that happen to everyone within normal peoples lives. These are high paid athletes that have no business complaining when others are attacking them on a social media platform or on sites like this and they certanly shouldn't read about or react to such things when they are being targeted. How dare them. Once they put on the jersey they are owned robots with no rights to personal events and they are open to constant criticism by anyone who wishes to attack them for their own biased purposes. A family member dies......too bad suck it up and get over it because we only care about the team. Going through a bad slump......too bad suck it up and take the abuse because we only care about the team. Made a bad play during a game......too bad suck it up when you get blasted on social media because you deserve it for your mistakes and we only care about the team.

Social media has become a plague with an open platform for people to spew their vile and nonsense behind an internet wall. And as we all know this is not limited to sports alone.

I see we have another delicate psyche on our hands here

Social discourse on the Internet was always this way. The only difference is it became more broadly popular.

Still needs to be better though tbh. It’s great that he’s figuring it out a little but a 0.902 (33rd) and a 2.97 (32nd) isn’t that great, behind Martin in both.

Last couple games have been better.

Yep.. he's gotta be Hasek and by tomorrow damnit! :ha:

In all seriousness, it's never going to be good enough for some. That is very much evident.

Over the last 5 years, league average goaltending numbers are a 0.908 sv% and a 2.85 GAA.

Is it not fair to want him to be average at least, being the 11th highest paid goalie in the NHL?
