These things would be all discussed between the acquiring team, the Leafs and Matthews. A NMC just means Matthews can say no, it doesn't mean they can't talk.
So you let him know before he signs an extension that you don't want him, and hope he doesn't decide to just ride out the year and sign wherever he wants, without costing his chosen team a lot of players and picks?

Just like Tavares did to New York.

Well, admittedly the Isles did better without JT than with him.

Nylander was a minus 3 Marner a plus 7 lol
Do you watch games at all. Nylander doesn't hit, but he takes all kinds of hits and goes into the dirty areas. Marner not do much. Of course Nylander would bring more return. Don't let one minor stat that is really only meaningful in large samples and certain circumstances fool you.

I am soooo disappointed with this team.

And one of the main reasons I'm so disappointed is because there are no likeable players left.

All the good blue collar players I could identify with, like Hyman and Kadri, are gone. The core are defined by their salaries more than anything. Maybe it's just me, but I have trouble relating to the "me first" attitude of these guys.

Being selfish is always a sure path to failure.

That describes the Leafs in a nutshell. Selfish and spoiled rich kids. With an insatiable appetite for money.

Greedy, greedy, greedy.

Always with their hands out. Always looking for more. Always biting off that which they cannot swallow.

Always asking what's in it for me?

The goal for them always has been, and always will be, money.

More worried about taking care of the name on the back of the jersey than the one on the front.

Of course I watch the games. Do you? When has Marner ever delivered in clutch times in the playoffs? Or Nylander or Matthews for that matter? And Marner getting points in blowout games in a win and a loss, means jack shit. He gets PP1 time and more ice time, so why shouldn't he have more points? SMH!!!

Can't see him ever neutering himself like that. The board also loves Shanahan, so he basically is ownership.
I doubt it too .. he has $5m US big ones for 2 more years .. a huge motivator .. but rumman is correct in that Shanny has always been a fall on da sword kid from time I knew him when we grew up on Hillside always a Mimico kid .. i played more with his older bro especially lacrosse .. but his dad was a fireman and my dad a cop so we kinda got into a lot of trouble but where we lived there was always a few good fist fights going on daily .. it is where we learned how to fight .. it was a tough area to grow up especially for Catholics as no one had much with large families in very very small 1 story homes .. kids would steal lunches etc etc .. small time crime and lots of payback .. thank god there was no internet or cameras back then

I was watching those games, as I recall, Marner avoids getting hit much as possible. I remember him bailing on pucks to avoid a hit. As for making a body check, I don't ever recall Marner ever making a hit on an opposing player. Please show me a clip, because that is a rare sighting.

Sadly we have been doing that for the last 5 years
Well, I will give the first 2 yrs with JT as growing pains. Since there were a lot of changes including the Coach and the COVID bubble, but definitely the last three yrs should be better starting with the Habs series.

You can’t just keep doing the same thing and expect a different result. When you are stuck at a certain point, changes need to be made.

Or you run it back, because you know, it took Stamkos x number of years to win a cup

I still think there's a good chance Marner and/or Nylander are moved this offseason. Leafs have a couple of big time needs (another top line C now that Tavares is a LW, and an all-situational top pair minute munching dman) that they will be unable to fill in this weak FA class.

Marner and Nylander would be the best trade chips to fill these needs because the team's prospect pool/draft capital is too weak to straight up buy a piece like this with only futures and add it to the core.

Then there's also the inevitability that both of their next contracts will end up being overpayments because Marner/Ferris will just demand Matthews money again except with UFA leverage, and Nylander's next contract will almost certainly be an overpayment relative to the limited value that purely offensive wingers like him provide.

Anyone reading too much into any "assurances" Shanahan gave the Core 4 that they would be back next season needs to realize that executives aren't just going to burn leverage and straight up say "yeah we're going to explore all options with you". Bergevin told PK Subban he would be back before he was traded for Shea Weber, and Masai told DeMar he would be back before he was traded for Kawhi.

I think the last 3 years lack of success are because of the Tavares deal. Going to be a couple more years until we can get out from under it

You just can’t keep running it back having 4 forwards take 50% of your cap

Marner played with Matthews
Nylander played with the disaster at 5v5 that is Tavares ;)

Everyone knows who the better player is and it's not Nylander.

Why is it always Willie Vs Marner? Like honestly, why?
Why not AM who just couldn't score? Or JT who just couldn't play and be effective 5 vs 5?

Trading one of Willie or Marner won't do anything with the current Leafs, unless the player(s) coming our way is Helle, Drai, McD, Mack, Makar or Kuch.

JT is byfar the biggest problem, as he doesn't even provide any intangibles.

People keep bringing up JT won't waive....but if I am the MGT, I would have a good talk with JT and ask him to waive. If he doesn't, take him off the PP1 and put Knies in that spot instead.
