Which begs the question: "what kind of idiot would sign a contract like that?"
The kind of idiot that puts together a bunch of pansies that are not built to thrive in the playoffs

Matthews would have until June 30th to give me a handshake agreement on a new deal or I start aggressively shopping him before July 1st. Same goes for Mitchy, probably the biggest sucky baby pansy on that roster.

It was a rhetorical question, and the correct answer is '42'.

I'm not sure how many times we've made that clear to people.

He CANNOT sign before July 1st., 2023.

He has a full NMC starting July 1st., 2023.
Correct....at which time he'll also have a NMC which enables him to refuse to sign like JT did in NY. This is why the trade him option should be seriously considered....

im not a leafs fan but if your asking me whats the next step i would trade 2 or 3 players a year until you get the right mix. you have a fabulous team (talent wise) you remind me of the sharks who for years i predicted would win the cup but never did.

I think people are so married to this core that they can't see the forest for the trees.

The thought of trading any of these losers is blasphemous to them.

I'm going to suggest this team doesn't have nearly as much time remaining in their competitive window as some may think. The Leafs are further along in their trajectory than they themselves care to admit. This is not an immature team anymore.

For proof, let the facts be submitted:

Their secondary forward corps has been hollowed out. They are relying on hitting the UFA lottery each summer to have guys like Bunting to play for peanuts. Picks and prospects are being traded for rentals and vets.

Conclusion: the Leafs are a mature team.

They didn't win when they were supposed to. What makes anyone think they are going to win now? Trading one of these guys seems insane.

Keeping them together even more so.

i have posted before on this theory I had when dubas had his monday presser. Keep in mind this was before he was “fired” and way before news he shares the same agency as matthews.

my theory is Dubas realizes he screwed up the matthews contract. Dubas being the green naive executive believed matthews would resign and likely had reassurences when matthews signed he would resign in Toronto. But time changes players feelings, especially if you’re an American star in a Canadian market. At some point likely this past year maybe even leading up to dubas presser, dubas lsought out from matthews or his agent a frank answer if matthews would resign. In a confidential conversation, dubas gets the bad news. So now dubas plays sabotage. Mondays presser was step #1. Use the family as his “excuse” to the public. When shanny offers him his offer 4 mil per for 5 yrs, dubas sends back a counter that is not only unreasonable, but outright ridiculous. Rumours were he wanted 6-7 mil per and total autonomy. Dubas sent this back knowing full well it would be rejected and subsequently fired.

dubas sabotaged himself not accidentally and coming off as greedy, but imho he sabotaged it on purpose because he doesn’t want to be here when matthews walks.

so your next question is why wouldn’t dubas just trade him? Simple, he can’t or likely doesn’t want to. I will elaborate. Have you looked at dubas’s trade history, it’s like the same 5 teams. trading matthews, who had a down year, played with a chronic injury, and has one year left and is owed a massive bonus on July 1 is not an easy trade to make. Add in the fact dubas is making this trade and he knows full well he will lose his shirt. dubas knows full well he will not get anything close to value back. this was dubas’s way of ducking out and letting the next gm take the fall when matthews walks or is traded.

I think this was a calculated play on dubas’s part and I predicted this was matthews related, when news just came out that he shares the same agency as matthews, connecting the dots became even clearer.

if I have posted anything ever on this board, let me say this once, and one time only, with How this is played out with dubas and matthews generic “intention” reply, Auston Matthews is NOT resigning in Toronto. Max money won’t be matthews priority #1, it’ll be geography. Kind of like a JT and Gaudreau situation, take a bit less to work and play where you want. superstars like JT, AM and JG would rather make a bit less to play where they want, matthews will follow suit.

This core has to go. They are all mentally weak. Not championship material.

It all started with Nylander strike. Dubie folded, flew to Europe and kissed his a**. He should have traded Willy. Like father, like son. His father was a definition of a mercenary.

Trade Willy and restore discipline. Keep Babcock and make young stars work hard. Trade anybody who is against management policy. No way around it.

Now it's a group of lazy millionaires instead of 'gud pros'. Muskoka 5 new edition.

It’s unbelievable how some people are married to this core. Florida traded Huby and they are in the final now.

AM dosent want to be here...wishful thinking. These guys are losers and you want them extended? They should all be shipped out. We need a new vision, new coach, new core..enough!
Yep we tried the backstreet boys now we need us some Zeppelin

Did JT say it? He just streched the process out & moved on. Let's just call it a hunch....its a huge gamble waiting for that NMC to kick in. Are YOU prepared to take it? Then if he moves on and we're left zero in return ....then what? You shrug your shoulders & say that's life? This is BIG business...it transcends sports. Letting him reach his NMC is a bad/risky decision all around.
Besides, we need change....this core is rotten.

...
Quote from John Tavares .....says he's open to discussing an extension with the NYI this summer. Adds "I'm excited about where the organization is headed."

Matthews saying its his intention to stay with the leafs is sketchy at best IMO
