Trade him for sure. His value won’t get much higher than it is now, and he’ll start declining in about five years, while we’re in the midst of a rebuild. Why keep him?

If you’re goal is to try the lottery then you move him, easiest way to take another crack at a rebuild. Guy carried us last season, and kept us above water in the playoffs, had a rough month or so during the regular season but he’s as good as it gets.

This is just a stupid post. Trade one of the the top goalies who probably will be good for the next 10 years. You don't contend for a cup without one. Please stop this silliness.

It’s honeslty just INSANE this thread was made watching the playoffs this season. Terrible goaltending by almost every single team and some people think it would be a good idea trading a franchise goalie? Yikes

If the Rangers have an identity, it’s good goaltending. This league is weird. You need good goaltending to win. The rub is that both the future Hall of Famer you’re paying $8M for and the random call-up getting paid $2M can go on heaters and play months at .940 SV%. You’re paying Igor because he’s more likely to go on that heater, but the upside is the same for both goalies.
We almost win with Hank in 2014 but I blame both Nash and Zucc too soft, and Martin all too soft like a duck, my pillow it cost a fortune and I sleep like one each night:DD

There are few very positive needle movers. 15% of the NHL imo.
There are guys that do not move the needle very much good or bad. 70% imo.
There are few very negative needle movers. 15% of the NHL imo

Igor is a positive needle mover.

One of the very few that we have so we will keep him.

Like most teams we have plenty of the middle group.
By the way the total cap will go up a lot in 2024 refering to Shannon in that hockey Youtube channel. So we can afford Igor and crazy to move him in an important position we have been successful for over a decade now in NY.

The cap increasing only increases player demands in an equal manner. The percentage of cap space is the important number.

If you can get an elite player back, almost certainly a forward, you do it, and that includes an elite prospect like Bedard, though not Fantilli.

Newsflash though, Chicago wouldn’t do it, which tells you how much an elite center is worth.

Lot of talk in here about what his contract looks like but don’t forget you can probably get a massive haul for him in trade.

Which would tell you how much the league values an elite goalie versus a plug in guy like Vanacek.

Devils gave up what for him? 2nd? 3rd? Really curious what the best offer we'd get right now for Igor. 2 more years at 5.6?

It should definitely be more than that, but it's tough to tell from recent goalie trades. Like you said, look at what guys like Georgiev and Vanecek got; Korpisalo got a first, but that was because Gavrikov was in the deal. If we want something to reset the goalie market, we probably need to see if Vancouver or Winnipeg deals Demko or Hellebuyck this offseason. That would set a better baseline for what an Igor deal would look like in the if the Rangers ever go down that road (which I highly doubt).

The goalie market isn’t always great but Igor would also be the best goalie on the block in some time; and he’d be getting acquired with term. Would need to be a hockey trade that makes sense obviously but you can use him to fix the cap and refill some assets. Rangers don’t have a ton else that is desirable. No one is tripping over themselves to get Goodrow.

Yeah, and like I said above, we'd need to see if Vancouver or Winnipeg deals Demko or Hellebuyck this offseason to reset the goalie market a bit. I'm not expecting Drury to turn over the roster that much this offseason anyways.

So I actually disagree with this. I think you lead with Igor BEFORE Demko or Hellebuyck is out there so you have as many teams out there as possible. You don’t want to lose goalie musical chairs. Hell if you get enough assets for Igor maybe you take Demko off the board and save a million; or more if you can attach a bad contract to Igor

Zib is a late bloomer 30 years old now when I look at his stats and seasons. It is off topic but there are other we can trade as well to fresh it up. I dont know if it will be successful, but if our younger players dont perform a quick rebuild is really difficult especially after the Kane & Taran trades and it costed us future draft picks.
And we cannot build around a future star/generational talent at the moment while Bedard going to Chicago.

The most difficult is to time a full rebuild and that is why scouting is so crucial in NHL and you need some luck as well in the draft lottery. Anaheim is probably not happy but there are many good talents this year.

I agree with the trade him camp,

Too big of a cap hit to any goalie is bad.

Yet at this point, does it really matter? They are at like around 50M to skaters who have no movement clauses. in cap dollars, or somewhere near half the cap on stuff that does not really do anything.

Okay. Good god. We're about to have a brand new coaching staff, we have UFA/RFA decisions to make, people want our 90+ point per season forward gone, people want our mediocre kids leading the team, and now Igor should be on the chopping block.

We're going to be irrelevant for the next decade with the karma that's being used up here.

Part of it could happen based on our retool timing back in 2016 and current talent pool @ReddestRum. 91 points Zib can give us a great deal while he is still healthy. Im also worried about his past injuries.

Are we rebuilding again?

Well difference is, the goalie shows up in the playoffs, the 90+ point forward doesnt. So one makes sense to move on from.

Great thread while Devils may go to third goalie in 6 games 😂
Against a team who has also played three different goaltenders this playoffs.

Goaltending is not why the Canes are where they are, or why the Devils are in their position.

Not to mention, those same Devils beat us with that same goaltending, while we had Igor.

Absolutely true, perhaps. A case could be made that we don't have the management to build a great team without the elite goalie saving our ass and maybe that's the big issue here.

I just look at the Knights, Devils, Kraken etc winning games and having success without the elite goaltending.
And imagine what the Leafs would be with one.
