Speculation: The Athletic-“So, it’s easy to imagine a scenario in which the Ducks move on from Zegras..."

I may be the only Habs fan to do this but i would trade our first this year for Zegras. If that's what it would take. I see the Ducks in a situation similar to the hawks, but a year or 2 removed.

That's it, just the first?

I hope that you have some good insurance as you're probably about to be sued by a bunch of people who sprained their eyeballs rolling them so hard...

May be i should have been more clear, but the first would be the basis for the trade. I'm not going to bother putting a "proper" trade together because no one ever agrees but this Habs fan would put our first in play for Zegras.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. That makes more sense. I don't agree*, but that's been well hashed over in closing in on 500 posts so no need to drag out our various soap boxes again.

*Z would probably only be traded in a 'hockey trade' - for another really good player that the Ducks would want/need rather than a random gift box++.

Glad to hear it. Literally zero interest at all. No pick outside #1 this year is worth more then Z to the Ducks.

Would you take the Ducks 1st for Caufield? Why would you expect the Ducks to do a similar deal for Zegras?

Wait? I thought he was no substance and a bad teammate?

We don’t know what a proper trade would be because we don’t see realistic scenario where he would be.

I think a top 10 draft pick is a fair start, but I don’t think we’re interested in moving him. He’s gotten so much hate on these forums that he’s actually pretty underrated, people hang on this he’s all show no substance idea but don’t really ever back it up. He took steps in the right direction defensively this year( and honestly this aspect was always overblown anyway)

how much more then a top 10 pick do you think Z is worth
I think there are a lot of variables with this. There is near a 0% chance the Ducks land the #1 pick, but IF they do and Montreal's is say 5th (Buffalo, Arizona, and Ottawa pass them), if the guy the Ducks think is the 2nd best player in the draft is available (most likely a D), that might do it. Celebrini would replace Zegras and if they view a guy as a future top pair D, they might do that as the basis of a trade. The further it gets down the draft, the less likely it is to happen. There tend to be about 3-4 players on average per draft that are as good or better than Z in the top 10 (not necessarily the top 3-4 picks).

Ducks two biggest needs are offense and a potential top pair RHD. Because Zegras fills one of those, it's unlikely he's moved until absolutely necessary or his role (offensive LW/C, which in this case Celebrini would fill) is filled by an equal or better player or they are certain they can fill a bigger/harder to fill need (top pair RHD).

Zegras won't return what Cutter Gauthier returned. Both good players, high picks in draft but Cutter has 3 more years of control and 6 million a year cheaper.

A great fit and need for Colorado obviously.

Just not sure the Avs would move the pieces that Anaheim would realistically want.

The only important question is: If Zegras is so good, why does Anaheim want to trade him when he's only 22?

Ya what we’d want, wouldn’t make sense for Montreal to move.

Slaf/ Reinbacher are the only 2 guys I’d really have interest in…. And even then I wouldn’t call it heavy interest at the expense of zegras
Slaf for Zegras? Not a chance.

I see a lot of Drouin in Zegras. I don’t see Montreal as a fit. He would have mental health issues.
I see poor man's Kovalev for Zegras.

It wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't ever really produce more than he has in his first two seasons. A Barzal/Eberle career arc.

But he's also a completely unknown quantity as an NHLer. 3 years of control and less money means nothing if it turns out he's not as good a player. The likelihood of him being as good as Zegras right out of the gate are slim.

No one would say Drysdale was worth more than Zegras (as reflected in their salary negotiations last summer). Yet Drysdale was traded for Gauthier. So the idea that Zegras would bring back less than Gauthier makes no sense.
