Without a doubt 6 is the greatest FF game ever made.

If I had to rank I'd probably go 6, 4/7, 12, 8, 9 as top 5. I have a soft spot for 12 as I really enjoyed 11 online and found 12 did a good job of capturing the style in a single player game.

15 had potential. Really enjoyed the battle system. Running around killing monsters in the wild is a blast. Found the whole car system tedious and the storyline was convoluted and weak.

I didn't seem to enjoy 10 nearly as much as most people do. Didn't enjoy 13 at all.

Still playing 14: A Realm Reborn. Just finishing the Heavensward expansion and gearing up for the Stormblood expansion in June.

So I was born in the late 90s and I feel like I missed the golden era of Nintendo. I think I'd like to purchase either an N64 or Gamecube, along with some games (probably mostly Mario games). Anyone here have any preferences on Gamecube vs. 64? Better performance? (Obviously the GC was released later) Better game selection? Is it easier to actually find games for decent prices for one of these?

Never had a Gamecube so can't speak to it, but I did (and still do) have an N64. It played second fiddle to my playstation, but of the dozen or so N64 games that I played, I consider some of them to be the best games (for their time) that I ever played.

Mario64 (absolutely loved the control you have over Mario with this one)
MarioKart 64 (many people prefer newer versions but I feel they perfected the series here)
GoldenEye (The game has not aged well, and although Doom and Wolfenstein came first, this one set the standard for future FPS's. Multiplayer was disgustingly addictive....A friend and I wasted countless afternoon playing proximity mines in the Bunker)
Zelda (pretty self-explanatory)

Old systems can be picked up pretty cheaply, but not positive about cost of old games.

Yeah I loved VI also. Great game. Happy that they will be rebooting FF 12. Loved the hunts in that one. The Gambit system is cool, but never really fully utilized it. I also like the story and characters.

I just clocked in about 160 hours of FF 15, pretty much done. I just need to beat the rest of the Randolph monsters. The biggest challenge was the menace dungeon without able to use potions/Elixirs. Damn that was hard. lol.

n64 has the more well known/praised titles, gamecube has a lot of under the radar good games.

start off with an n64. get mario 64, banjo kazooie and the sequel, banjo tooie, ocarina of time, majora's mask, and conkur's bad fur day (will run you $80 about for that one). those are the main ones.

some other good games would be jet force gemini, space station silicon valley, blast corps, indiana jones and the infernal machine (the graphics are pretty terrible bit i enjoy it, reminds me of tomb raider).

the golden age of nintendo was nes/snes though. the n64 is not nearly as good as the hype would have you believe.

Totally agree. SNES was great! N64 just did not have enough games. When the system first came out they had maybe 3 or 4 games available. I remember it was something like Mario 64, Star Wars 64, and then Pilot Wings 64.

Haha I knew someone would bring up the NES/SNES when I wrote golden age.

I'm leaning towards the n64, not really looking for games too obscure. The only thing though - I quickly looked up some games and their prices, and I just don't understand how games released 20 years ago still cost the same amount of money as an AAA game released right now.

the snes is still great. i didnt grow up with it so theres no nostalgia factor for me. pretty easily my favorite console. it has the holy god trilogy of games in chrono trigger, terranigma, and super metroid.

the price of a game generally depends on how many copies were originally produced/sold. just remember that there are limited quantities for these games, they're not being made anymore. thats why saturn games are so expensive, it wasnt popular in the us so games are hard to come by, which is why average or even bad games for the system can go for 60-100 dollars.

a game like mario 64 goes for about 20-25 because there were tons of copies sold. conkur's is more expensive because it was one of the last games ever released for the console and not as many copies were made.

for the most part n64 games are very cheap, you wont spend more than 30 bucks most of the time.

Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite RPG games outside the FF series. What I loved about Chrono Trigger, you can re-start a new game after finishing it, and have all your characters leveled up from the previous game to start. Most RPGs don't do that.

I got the switch. Only have 1 game for now (Zelda) but it is a real drain on the battery and doesn't last through my commute. Does anyone have any suggestions about a battery charger for it?

How long is your commute? The battery lasts around 3 hours playing Zelda. You may need to lower your brightness or something. I was able to take a metro north train to Brewster on the weekend (~90 minutes) and didn't lose half my battery.

These are the top batteries for it:

I'm waiting for this one to be released

if you havent played it, play terranigma.

you're welcome (youll need tobget a repro cart though, it wasnt released in na, totally worth the 50 bucks)

That's an absolute dynamite launch lineup though by today's standards. The Switch has one game worth playing lol.

Makes sense. I guess there's more demand for old games than I thought.

Thanks for the help and the nice list of games.

Commute is around an hour each way give or take though this morning was long. I do play with full brightness so I guess I can reduce it to extend the battery. I was just in Vegas and got the ravpower to take on the flights. Will be essential when I go to asia in a few weeks. It's not portable to walk around with though. I won't be walking around with switch but I still want to be able to charge phone and camera on the go. I have something else for that.

The rav power outputs up to 30 watts so it can easily charge my switch, phone and ipad headphones and camera at the same time. What makes the anker worth waiting for? I have one of their ac adapters which I keep in my bedroom to charge phone ipad and headphones.

I wish I played Chrono Trigger back in the day. I loved FF6-8. I just replayed Final Fantasy 7 and it's just as fantastic now as it was then.

I mostly just don't have a need for a battery yet and the Anker one looks smaller and supposedly charges a little faster.

Do you have a PlayStation or PlayStation 2? They have a package which has FF IV and Chrono Trigger packaged into one set. I was under the impression they were re-doing FF 7 guess I missed that. I know 12 is being re-released later this year.

Love the avatar btw!

Haven't played anything since I beat Horizon in about a month and a half, but excited to play What Became of Edith Finch. Been looking forward for a while.
