Ok story time because I just played the greatest Stanley Cup Finals ever.
A little context, we came into the Finals with a record of 12-3 and the Ducks came in with a ridiculous mark of 12-1 with 10 straight overall playoff victories. Neither of these two teams were really challenged all tournament long, and the heavyweight war is set. Should be a good one.
Game 1 - Truthfully I came in really nervous because the Ducks absolutely clowned the West. But we were the most dominant shot differential team all year so let's see how good these guys really are. Ducks score 30 seconds in. Uh oh - the tone is set. Rangers tie the game but they were never really in it. Ducks score the next four. They outshoot us severely. They take it 5-2. It's 11 straight. A message was sent.
Game 2 - As clear as the first shot fired by the Ducks was, so too was the response by the Rangers. We take it 3-1. The red hot John Gibson who came in with a .956 save percentage in 13 games keeps the Ducks in it, but it wasn't competitive. The Ducks scored 90 seconds in and then they got steamrolled. The final shot count is 52-19. We're all square.
Game 3 - This one got off the rails. The Ducks score in the first two minutes for the third straight game and hold on the rest of the period. Early in the second, the Rangers score twice in 30 seconds from Thornton (yes, that Thornton. I went for it at the deadline) and Stepan. With 5 minutes left the Ducks get a 5 on 3 and score on both fouls, the go ahead goal by JT Miller who was involved in the Manson deal, because of course. With a minute left they score again. 4-2 going into the third. Within 30 seconds of puck drop, it's 4-4. The Rangers score twice in 30 seconds for the second time in the game. Kreider and Stepan again. Two minutes later Pirri takes to the slot and backhands it. He beats Gibson. A softie. A minute after that Chris Neil walks in and blasts one from the circle. He beats Gibson. Another one he wants back. Shortly thereafter the Ducks respond on a Cogliano goal. Right after that, deadline acquisition Tobias Rieder tosses one from the point and Gibson whiffs. Three straight howlers. The previously unbeatable Gibson has lost the plot and every shot is going in. It's 7-5 and there's 10 minutes to play. But from there, the Rangers clamped down. Stepan adds an empty netter. He has a Stanley Cup Finals hatrick and the Rangers have an 8-5 win.
Game 4 - The Rangers came out flying with a chance to land a knockout blow on the Ducks and had a clear edge in possession in this game. Not Game 2, but clear enough. Still, the Ducks have adjusted after the Game 3 circus and the Rangers aren't able to generate any real quality with their possession. On the other end, although the Ducks aren't getting much, everything they get is high-danger. This team is MASSIVE. It seems like everyone and their personal trainer is 6'5". There's nothing you can do about them in front of the net. Three rebound goals for the Ducks in this one. They take it 3-1 and we go back to Anaheim tied.
Game 5 - This one was a low-event, grind-it-out turf war and I loved every minute of it. The Rangers outshoot the Ducks 20-16 for the game. Again, the Rangers have possession but the quality isn't there. So we resort to just firing it. A Buchnevich wrister double deflects off of Ducks defenders and beats Gibson on a bounce. 1-0 in the second. Grabner breaks in on a shorthanded breakaway and doubles the lead. 2-0 going into the third. Then EA does what EA does. It's ice-tilt time! Penalty, penalty, penalty, penalty, penalty, penalty. The Rangers can't even look at a Duck without getting whistled. The Ducks add a powerplay goal early but the PK stands tall to hold onto a 2-1 lead. But by the last minute, everyone was wiped out. Stamina bars were at zero. The Ducks capitalize and tie it on an even strength goal with 52.6 seconds left. The goal scored by -you guessed it- JT ****ing Miller. The Ducks make it to overtime registering 8 shots for the game at even strength. Eight. Overtime begins and Joe Thornton wins the opening faceoff. Clendening takes it back into his own zone. Set play. Fowler(lol) loses Jimmy Vesey and Clendning hits him on a bomb pass. Vesey breaks all alone. Fakes, fires...PING!!! Vesey gets taken out but gets up celebrating. The referee points. Off he iron and in. The Rangers can end it at the Garden.
Game 6 - Facing elimination, the Ducks come out flying in the first and throttle the Rangers. Shots are 14-3, but Hank stands tall. From there the Rangers take over, but Perry strikes twice in 20 seconds as soon as the second period starts. Early goals are a theme in this series. The Rangers throw the kitchen sink but now Gibson is standing on his head. It's a goalie fight. Kreider pulls one back on the powerplay but Nate Thompson puts it away with 2 minutes left. The chance to end the series is blown and now the Rangers have to go on the road in a deciding game.
Game 7 - In the opening montage, Eddie O goes on and on about how the home team wins every game 7 ever. Nice. This was the best game of the series. A moderate event game with both teams trading chances, but not completely devoid of defense. Final shot count was 36-28 for the Rangers. First period ends scoreless. Nerve-wracking isn't even the word. Another 10 minutes pass with the teams going up and down to no avail. With 8:38 to go in the second, Vesey chases a defenseman down in the corner, plants him up against the boards, and steals it. He centers for a breaking Joe Thornton and Jumbo pots it. The Rangers are ahead in game 7 and Thornton has waited a long time for his. And with the light at the end of the tunnel in sight, Hank ****ing picks NOW to fall asleep. Two minutes later, Vermette beats him on an absolute snail from the circle. A minute and a half after that, Ritchie walks into the slot and beats Hank on a ****ing backhander along the ice. Hank what actually are you doing? The Rangers are 4 minutes away from going into the 3rd period of game 7 behind. But Stepan glides into the zone and snipes one over Gibson's shoulder. All square into the third. 20 minutes to decide the season.
The last time a team trailed in a SCF Game 7 and won the Stanley Cup was 1971. We've had a lead change, so 46 year streak will end tonight. After a quick burst of four goals, the teams go back to trading saves. Gibson robs Vesey. Hank Robs Getzlaf. We're 7 and half minutes from the unthinkable - overtime in game 7. The Ducks get possession in their own end with the Rangers changing and try a D to D pass. Fast reads it and chips the puck away. He's after it but he's hooked. No call. But he gets back up with a heroic effort and breaks down the ice with a defender draped on him. He dekes and backhands. He roofs it. It is Jesper Fast and Rangers are 7:18 from the ultimate prize. That Fast line had just come on so I left them for the faceoff. The Ducks win the draw and establish possession. They cycle for about 75 seconds but are unable to really generate any shots. Manson has a chance to clear and a Ducks D tries a dangerous pinch. Manson just barely hits Fast on the breakout. It's a 2-on-1. Fast breaks in with Chris Neil. He passes. Neil fires. Neil scores! 4-2 with 5:35 to play. The Ducks don't generate much the rest of the way as the Rangers can smell it. With 11 seconds to play Kreider pounces on a loose puck in front of Hank and tosses it out of the zone. It bounces off the boards at center ice and rolls. And rolls. And rolls. And rolls. It rolls all the way into the gaping net. 5-2. This one will last a lifetime. Stepan gets the Conn Smythe.
