This 8-minute fan film is very impressive, both technically and in its ability to evoke nostalgia and emotion in a way that modern Trek is incapable of.
Yeah, I learned about that after I posted it (and before it was given its own thread). It definitely makes it more special than I originally assumed. I even wondered if Shatner and the Nimoy family would object, so it's nice hearing that they were involved. Not really a fan film as it was sanctioned by star trek, the Nimoy family and Shatner had been talking about it for 2 years
The differences are mainly in the space shots, which were re-done in CGI. I hate that they did that, but at least there are only a few such shots per episode and last only a few seconds each.Just got a free Paramount subscription in the last few months, been wanting to start the original series but I only see the remastered version on Paramount. I would have rather seen how the shows actually aired but don't see the unmastered version on there.
Do you think there's that big of a difference between the two?

Not to go on a whole "cannon is everything" spiel. One of the many reasons I disliked Discovery though. Bravo.
'Star Trek: Discovery' Officially Erased From Canon | Cosmic Book News
Fans can kiss Star Trek: Discovery goodbye as not only has the series been canceled but it's learned the show has officially been erased from canon.cosmicbook.news
That's fine. I don't mind SNW and it has some good ideas, but it also can't help itself with some very ridiculous stories, having to redo classic TOS, and why do they need to bring all the TOS characters in? Be self-contained and create new characters. Then so is Brave New Worlds and several times Spock talked about missing his sister
Appreciate it! I'll probably just try to track down the original versions. I've meaning to dive into the Star Trek world for years now. I don't know why Paramount doesn't just give you the option to watch either.

SNW is ok at times when it's not trying to wink at the audience or redo old episodes. The thing I saw says that SNW is likely still considered canon. Just because Discovery no longer exists doesn't mean that versions of its events can't have existed in the main timeline in some capacity. Just not exactly as portrayed in Discovery.

There's various things like Kirk always being around the Enterprise, Scotty joining so early, Uhura being promoted in one year and then being an Ensign forever, Gorn "first contact", Khan's timeline change, Spock's wife, Spock and Chapel's "romance" so early, Jose Tyler missing, Jenna and not Gary Mitchell, Sam Kirk being a hipster, and the crew who are going to meet Khan a decade later having no idea they've been hanging out with his descendant forever.
So yeah, a lot of poor writing and "thrills".
The three are pretty big issues.A lot of those are non-issues or things that had no established history or backstory to contradict what the show chooses to do.
The only ones I agree are kind of annoying are a) forcing Kirk into the story so early as a sort of recurring character. I would've been fine with one small arc of him being there for 1-3 episodes, but the fact that he seems primed to recur more is awkward. b) La'an Noonian-Singh, who literally could've been anyone with a connection to the Eugenics Wars but they went with the most blatantly obvious one in spite of the problems it causes and c) Spock meeting T'Pring in spite of Amok Time estabishing that they had not seen each other since childhood.
The rest of it is easily explainable or ignoreable. Like I don't get the Uhura one. She won't be an ensign forever. She was a lieutenant in TOS. Her getting promoted to ensign from the final stages of her cadet tenue and then not moving up in rank for a few years is not that weird.
