Yeah, I learned about that after I posted it (and before it was given its own thread). It definitely makes it more special than I originally assumed. I even wondered if Shatner and the Nimoy family would object, so it's nice hearing that they were involved.

Just got a free Paramount subscription in the last few months, been wanting to start the original series but I only see the remastered version on Paramount. I would have rather seen how the shows actually aired but don't see the unmastered version on there.

Do you think there's that big of a difference between the two?

The differences are mainly in the space shots, which were re-done in CGI. I hate that they did that, but at least there are only a few such shots per episode and last only a few seconds each.

The differences are mainly in the space shots, which were re-done in CGI. I hate that they did that, but at least there are only a few such shots per episode and last only a few seconds each.

Appreciate it! I'll probably just try to track down the original versions. I've meaning to dive into the Star Trek world for years now. I don't know why Paramount doesn't just give you the option to watch either.

That's fine. I don't mind SNW and it has some good ideas, but it also can't help itself with some very ridiculous stories, having to redo classic TOS, and why do they need to bring all the TOS characters in? Be self-contained and create new characters.

The only changes are those orbital or space shots being done in CGI and cleaning up some effects shots to be more consistent or not be so obvious now that they're being viewed in HD

I don't think it's worth finding original broadcast versions. The CG space stuff is generally done in a way that makes it still feel appropriate to the original 60s aesthetic and just addresses the fact that a lot of those early effects shots resulted in muddy, boring planets that were badly composited in the background or had trouble showing ship models doing anything beyond the most basic movement. Otherwise I think the only other sort of common changes were things like removing visible wires from "floating" objects and fixing badly blended effects overlays.

This isn't a Star Wars situation where Lucas inserted a bunch of CGI crap that altered shots or changed the composition of scenes. It's just cosmetic touch-ups to stuff that was already there and I don't think it distracts from the episodes at all. Given the choice between watching the show with an already-obtained Paramount+ account or having to go find the mid 2000s/early 2010s Blu-Rays that had the option to switch between original effects and the remaster and pay a premium to buy them, I think the extra cost isn't worth the minimal differences.

The thing I saw says that SNW is likely still considered canon. Just because Discovery no longer exists doesn't mean that versions of its events can't have existed in the main timeline in some capacity. Just not exactly as portrayed in Discovery.

SNW is ok at times when it's not trying to wink at the audience or redo old episodes.

There's various things like Kirk always being around the Enterprise, Scotty joining so early, Uhura being promoted in one year and then being an Ensign forever, Gorn "first contact", Khan's timeline change, Spock's wife, Spock and Chapel's "romance" so early, Jose Tyler missing, Jenna and not Gary Mitchell, Sam Kirk being a hipster, and the crew who are going to meet Khan a decade later having no idea they've been hanging out with his descendant forever.

So yeah, a lot of poor writing and "thrills".

The three are pretty big issues.

Here's the deal with Uhura; Mariner literally told her she was this very important person in the future, we know she's a linguistic and comms expert, and much later in he career, she was Ensign Picard's first commanding officer.

She gets promoted from cadet to Ensign in one year and then there's 13 years that go by before TOS which has a five year mission and she's only a Lt. Cmdr. after that mission. So it takes her almost two decades to go from Ensign to Lt. Commander and then she's a commander after five years (the 13 years in between TMP and WOK). It's very inconsistent. At least after Undiscovered Country she becomes a Captain and does that for a long time.
