I'm familiar with -- and like -- Death Grips, Destroyer, and Daughters. The Korean shoegaze bands I'm not familiar with tho i feel like I watched a short youtube documentary on the scene a few months ago. If we are talking favorite all-time bands, mine are pretty boring by their age. The Clash are #1 for sure. My last.fm, which goes back to 2006, has my most-played artists (not counting vinyl and various other things) as The Clash, The Kinks, The Pogues, Tom Waits, The Jam, The Fall, Rancid, Pixies, Joy Division, David Bowie as my top 10. Newer bands I've been into a lot are King Gizzard (as mentioned before), Viagra Boys (saw 'em in Toronto this winter), The Chats (seein' 'em in Toronto in a few months). If you click on my last.fm link you can see what I've been listening to the past couple months or year or whatever you specify.

I guess i would also add if someone asked me what my favorite bands were, among the dozens, I would think of some of the "proto-punk" bands I love a lot like The Stooges, Velvet Underground, MC5, and Rocket From The Tombs/Pere Ubu

I was just introduced to the Death Grips last year. They are pretty unique, and the (much) younger version of me would have loved the hell out of them live. Some of their concert footage seems batshit insane (in a good way). I also think its pretty cool that Bowie was apparently a big fan and some of his last stuff was influenced by them.

Not familiar with Japense shoegaze as a scene either (though I know I've heard some that would fit the bill). Most Japanese music I'm familiar with branches either from psychedelia, early rock/rockabilly, or punk. And, of course, anime end-credits music.

Can't help with Japanese shoegaze (though I would definitely like to get more familiar with shoegaze in general), but on the punk side maybe as far away as you can get, one of the more memorable early concerts I saw in high school was Sonic Youth with the Boredoms (Death Grips tangent in a sec) opening at Buff State and I legitimately did not know now what the hell was going on. At one point some guy in the band was banging on a contraption that I can maybe best describe as a pizza box with wires coming out of it. There is some l interesting Boredoms stuff, but noise-punk for me is best appreciated in smaller doses even and my musical pallet at that point was not developed enough to take that in.

Death Grips Tangent. Zach Hill (who is terrific) played some shows with the Boredoms and had one of the cooler entrances I've seen.

Lastly, in a more traditional vein, last few years one of the things I really enjoy are unique/well-done covers of songs I appreciate in their OG form and I really love this cover by Lily Allen of Straight to Hell from The Clash. Its worth checking out for anyone who appreciates either of them. Mick Jones is on the track as well.

That entrance was badass. Death Grips are going to be here in Pittsburgh in a few weeks and it makes me want to see them even more now. If I get tickets it'll make an exciting few weeks with seeing them and then going to see the Steelers and Bills play. So busy with work I hardly ever get to go and do things most days.

This was the first concert I ever went to. I was 15 and also didn't know what the hell was going on lol.

For Japanese shoegaze - I don't know much either but Fishmans is a great band.

I saw Sonic Youth at the Town Ballroom some time in the early/mid 2000's. From what they said it had been a while since they had last played Buffalo, like 10 or more years.

Boredoms are one of the best in their genre, definitely. I'd bet they're a trip to see live.

Nice! I absolutely Love Joy Division and Velvet Underground. A few years ago I feel like I was listening to those bands and Bauhaus like every day all day.

I was amused as hell to find Poptone - Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins resurrection of a touring Tones on Tail featuring one of Haskin's daughters on bass.

Father-daughter bonding time.

They’ve only recently leaned into the political aspect instead of just telling stories in their songs.
They had a track on this album in 2004, and had politically tinged songs earlier than that, plenty that were pro-union as well. They just jumped on what's politically trendy for 2022.

I know how they’ve been. There was always the sporadic political song, but they’ve always been a bar band and doing the “singalong” songs. Even back then their political songs were the singalong first, then the message. Now they’re successful enough to not care.

And both of those Rock Against Bush albums were amazing. There’s so many one-off songs on it.

I saw the Boredoms twice in Buffalo. Once when they opened up for Sonic Youth and again when they opened for Nirvana. They were great live.

Honestly I liked them better before they became a Pogues tribute act after their second album.

In other punk news Anti Flag have disbanded due to rape accusations against Justin Sane.

f***ing wait. What?! He’s accused of that? That must be so new that it doesn’t even show up when I searched for that. But if true, then screw him. Lock him up and throw away the key.

It’d be a shame because I really like their music. And that last album is amazing. There’s not a single weak song on it

All I will say is that if any of you don't know what that guy did do not look it up as it's just about the most vile and disgusting thing ever.

A new member of the college music dept. is moving in building across the lot from me. His instrument of choice is the kamancheh, which is hauntingly beautiful in how it sounds.

An example -

How the UK thought 29 years was enough is beyond me, he'd probaly be dead if he was in a US prison.
Never heard of him. Not gonna search per above reccommendations.
So... where does this guy sit on the Dahmer / John Wayne Gacy / R. Kelly / Gary Glitter scale?

And to keep it on topic of music...

He'd be just a tier below the serial killers. R. Kelly would be an angel compared to him.
