I was too young for Thriller (Born end of 81) but Michael Jackson was something that was part of the music world as I grew up. I remember Bad coming out and being everywhere but even then I was still pretty young. The first song that I specifically remember was Black or White. You’d go to school and excitedly talk about having seen the video.

I would say it’s simplistic to think there’s no one like that today but my kids with their enthusiasm of youth will look back with nostalgia on different bands. I do wonder if the availability of music these days through things like Spotify means they’re spoiled for choice because there are so many bands and so many channels.

In my youth if you were big on the radio, on MTV (or equivalent) and in a record store then you were famous. Michael Jackson was all those things.
I think there was a song he did with Janet that was always in the top 10 lists for most expensive music videos

So, for those who are more knowledgeable in the subject- who had the biggest draw when they first hit- Michael Jackson, The Beatles, or Elvis?
Michael Jackson was a child member of the Jackson Five, so he was already known to the industry and listening populous. Not sure the comparisons are equivalent.

Here he is below with brothers Frito, Geranium, etc.

The Dick Clark segment seems lip-sync'd, or the video creator sync'd a recording to the video.

Fun fact about the Jackson's. I was at the Superbowl for the most famous titty slip ever. I was too far away to notice it happen live.

That's true. Perhaps a better question is, who peaked the highest? Elvis had a swarm of screaming teenage girls, but I know the parents of that generation weren't too fond of him, so that probably hurt. The Beatles had insane popularity. I suppose MJ probably hit the highest record sales. Maybe I just answered my own question, haha.

I look at videos of the screaming fans of The Beatles in bewilderment. One of my mates’ parents saw them when they came to NZ. They said you couldn’t hear anything apart from the crowd screaming.

They weren’t the first artist to play loudly, but they were probably the first artist to not look like their parents. Everyone else was clean cut, pop music, or musically boring. That wall would have come down eventually by someone if The Beatles didn’t beat everyone to the punch.

Actually, the mainstream magazines of that era contrasted the (initially) short haired clean cut suit and tie Beatles with the longer haired beatnik dressed iconoclastic Rolling Stones and openly and provocatively asked, “Whom would you want your daughter dating?”

Do you guys have go-to songs for testing speakers? Whenever someone tells me they have a great sound setup, I have two songs I test out to see if it can handle the loooooow.

So I got this thing on sale for Labour Day for $150 (normally $300), and it’s apparently water, snow and dust proof, and supposed to float in water, but I’m not trying that out. It has a 30-hour battery life and only takes 3 hours to charge (4 if I use it while it’s charging).

It’s so loud that I’ve already had to deal with the cops coming here twice because of the noise. The worst that’s happened is that they’ve asked where I got it and how much, and to keep it down after 11.

The old speaker I got for $30 in June is behind it, and a bonus of the type of cigarettes I smoke.
