anything hockey related coming from ESPN should be highly questioned as legitimate.

Damal does analytics or trying to draw conclusions based on RAPM? Ryan McDonough and Miller in the top 10 is questionable.

Both good but not top 10 defenders

Seems silly to have 18 different Oilers threads on the first page here, but here we are.

Can we just have one giant thread for all trades involving the Oilers for now?
What!!!! and deny posters the right to run down all the different oiler players in different threads? They may feel this unjustly restricts their rants

No we are not over valuing McDavids value.

here is an article addressing THE BEST SHUTDOWN d-men in the league--it is from last season

Top D men from earlier this year

Lol do you actually watch Slavin or hockey for that matter? You would know that Slavin is the best shutdown guy in the league if you did. You don’t need some article from the Athletic that cherry picks advanced stats to know that. Also, your top 10 list has guys like Erik Karlsson and Dougie Hamilton. I would take Slavin over both and where are Hughes and Morrisey? Also your own top 10 list from “NHL Executives” states that Slavin is “widely considered the best defensive defenceman in the league.” Yet, you yourself state that he isn’t.

I don’t disagree that the price would be insane because from a PR perspective, you simply don’t trade a McDavid for anything less than another McDavid. Look at how the Gretzky trade turned out… the Oilers simply cannot go back to their fanbase with a sequel to that type of deal. So the easy answer is “McDavid won’t be traded, period”.

Strip away the fan/media politics and thinking of it as a pure hockey trade, I’m interested in knowing from the room here, does this deal make the Oilers a better hockey team than they are right now? Does it also make the Canes better?

It definitely doesn't make the Oilers a better hockey team. The only thing they have going for it at this point in McDavids ability to take over games to overcome the lack of talent around him.

Slavin alone does not fix the defense, the trade does nothing to address their lack of a goaltender. The Oiler need more than one or even two pieces to fix what is wrong with them which is why triyng a new coach or getting a new goalie the two most common suggestions don't work. Likewise with this deal adding a defenseman doesn't solve the problems either.

Maybe you could make the argument if you replace McDavid with Draisaitl that could be a deal considering but for me this (and likely no trade) makes no sense with McDavid in it.

I’ve lost braincells reading this. McDavids never getting traded. If they were to ever trade a guy it would be draisaitl

Look at the standings. What's that offensive superstar doing for you?

Defense wins championships, and Slavin is every bit as good at erasing goals as McDavid is at creating them.

You trade Slavin for McDavid and Aho for the best Dman you can get

2nd and 3rd trades aren’t necessary imo, just needless lateral moves. Remove McLeod and Geekie from the first deal and it’s good.

As a canuck fan I would accept trade #2 without any hesitation which makes me think its a bit lop-sided for Vancouver. I enjoyed watching Lysell in junior here in Vancouver 2021-22 so I'm high on him. McLeod and Blueger are kind of a wash.

So that Drai/Spurgeon trade offer got me thinking and pondering if there was a way for the Oilers to actually get Spurgeon, without Drai of course in a drastic win-now type move.

3 Team Deal:
To Edmonton: Jared Spurgeon, Marc-Andre Fleury (50% retention), Patrick Maroon (50% retention)
To Minnesota: Evan Bouchard, Xavier Bourgault, Matvei Petrov, Mattias Janmark, Petr Mrazek, 2024 1st round pick (EDM), 2024 2nd round pick (EDM)
To Chicago: Jack Campbell, Vincent Desharnais, Carter Savoie/Raphael Lavoie, 2025 1st round pick (EDM)

Rationale:
- Edmonton gets their top pairing RHD, starting G for the season and a solid veteran for the bottom six, both Fleury and Maroon are UFAs at the end of the year.
- Minnesota gets Bouchard, two of the Oilers top prospects, 2024 1st and a 2024 2nd. Mrazek and Janmark replace Fleury and Maroon and are free agents at the end of the year
- Chicago picks up a 2025 1st, one of the Oilers better prospects, a young RHD and no cap difference for the season swapping Campbell with Mrazek. Campbell's buy out at the end of the year isn't terrible either with savings in the next 3 seasons and a $1.5M cap hit for 3 seasons

Obviously there are NMCs involved with the Wild players, but hopefully they can be convinced to waive. Spurgeon is from Edmonton, Maroon seemed to enjoy his time here and Fleury would get to be the starter.

Oilers Lines:

Kane - McDavid - McLeod
Holloway - Drai - Foegele
Hyman - Nuge - Gagner
Maroon - Ryan - Brown

Nurse - Spurgeon
Ekholm - Broberg
Kulak - Ceci

Fleury
Skinner
