Slavin would immediately make the Oilers competent defensively

But he also plays a style that isn't at all valued by HFB so of course nobody gives a shit about him
Slavin is a very good d-man but I would rather keep McDavid and find another way to get a d-man which is what the Oilers should do.

If you're starting a McDavid trade thread, don't bother unless it includes a massive haul of picks and prospects.

If they are trading McDavid, they are hitting the rest button IMO.
I agree but if the trade is made in season there should be 1-2 serious contracts going back to Edmonton as well.

To me the ideal package would be: 1-2 Contract players; 1-2 1st round picks and at least 2 top tier prospects. One of the players going back to Edmonton should be a goalie.

What's Jack Campbell worth on the open market?
Not much right now. Didn't he let in 4 goals on 20 shots in the AHL last night?

Congratulations -- you drew the most unreasonable and needlessly controversial conclusion possible about my feelings about Slavin from what I wrote.

McDavid would likely win a cup in Carolina no matter what the Canes give up to get him. I'd trade anything to get him if I were them. If I were the Oilers, I would give up anything not named McDavid to acquire everything from the net out and pay absolutely everything to get it.

If they went scorched earth they could win a cup pretty easily within the remainder of his tenure there. You might as well do it while you have him in his prime because once you lose him you are in a barren wasteland rebuild regardless.

You simply must be a casual who does not value defensive play if you would trade THE Jacob Slavvin for Connor McDavid (who??).

Why is all the discussion about Slavin in this thread, I don’t get it?
Because a poster made a claim about him that was probably intended to provoke what you are referring to as discussion.
I think from a Canes perspective it’s obviously that they say no because they don’t even do Aho for McDavid straight up.
You cannot identify something as obvious by relying on an antecedent almost no one agrees is correct.

I expect my Habs might well be involved in a secondary capacity in any Oilers shakeup... Montreal is one of the rare teams that can add cap, and there is a relationship there (ie, Kulak trade).

So to be clear, you think Jacob Slavin is a top 5 defensive defenseman of all time?
I think he would absolutely be in that discussion, yes. Brind'Amour is definitely biased, but also not a bullshitter, and he's said that Slavin is the best he's ever seen in his time involved in the game.

For whatever it's worth, I would absolutely trade Aho for McDavid straight up. Even with a substantial Canes add.

HAHAHA Aho is not even a top 10 C. he's not even a gamebreaker.

Slavin will always be somewhat underrated imo. The dude is such a beast defensively, but lacks the offense for a Norris. Not to say he has none, but it's not of the Makar/Fox/Heisk category. The guy is amazing defensively though. Complete f***ing stud, and has been for years. If I'm looking for the perfect guy to set the tone for my blueline defensively, it's him.

None of this speaks to the silly debate in this thread now, mind you. Just my thoughts on Slavin from a defensive stance.

How many conference has Edmonton Sniffed in the past 5 years?

2019 - Canes - Conference finals; Oilers missed playoffs
2020 - Canes - won qualifying round lost first round - Oilers - Lost Qualifying Round
2021 - Canes - Lost Semi-finals won one round - Oilers Lost First Round
2022 - Canes - Lost Semi-Finals won one Round - Oilers Lost Conference finals won 2 round
2023 - Canes - Lost Conference finals won two rounds - Oilers Lost Semi-Finals won 1 round.

And it's no secret the Hockey experts say the Eastern Conferences is the toughest of the 2 conferences.
Hmmmm….almost as if hockey was a team game hey? Trying ti say having the best players in the word wouldn't help your team is certainly a take I’ll give you that.

I don't think you understand how marginal value works, despite seeming to love the phrase.

It has nothing to do with how many forwards or defensemen exist. It's simply how much better a player is than a baseline (average, replacement, whatever you want to use).

If you want to get into what's hard to find around the league, LHD is not at the top of that list.
How about a generational centre? I heard they were fairly easy to acquire these days. All it takes is a stay at home, shut down d man apparently. Who knew?
