Oilers are falling and hard. There are serious flaws on the team. This is a trade for the ages and should actually help Oilers compete and also financially help the Stars(merchandise sale + more eyes on the team and sponsors) and grow the game quite a bit in Texas. Here it comes:

Stars get:

- McDavid 12.5M UFA 2026 (agrees to trade)

- Bouchard 3.9M RFA 2025

Oilers get

- Hintz 8.45M UFA 2031

- Heiskanen 8.45M UFA 2029

Stars get the best player in the game and a promising D. Oilers get a defensively sound 1C + a Top5-Top10 D, both on longterm contracts. Oilers lineup after trade:

Kane - Hintz - Hyman
McLeod - Draisaitl - Foegele
Holloway - RNH - Gagner
Lavoie - Hamblin - Ryan

Nurse - Heiskanen
Ekholm - Ceci
Kulak - Desharnais

Skinner
X

Who makes the trade?
Not the Stars

Neither of McDavid nor Draisaitl has the value that Edmonton fans seem to think they do, and it's entirely about contracts that 1) will expire soon, but 2) not soon enough to re-up them as part of a trade consummated this season.

Hintz (2031) and Heiskenen (2029) are signed long term and both are elite players. The Stars are not trading either one of them.

This isn't as close as you think it is, OP.

Many of these trade proposals lately (Boston, Vancouver, Dallas) are targeting teams that are off to great starts. Those teams don't mess around with what's working.

They've won a LOT more playoff games despite no cup.

Have they?

McDavid: 49 games played | 75 points
Slavin: 60 games played | 33 points

Eleven games isn't exactly "A LOT". I also wouldn't bring up points but @mikeyfan is insisting that Slavin's defensive game supersedes McDavid's offense. Considering McDavid has more than double his production in less games. No... no it doesn't.

In fact, Aho and Slavin combined had less points than McDavid did last year.

Would be awesome to get a guy like McDavid but damn the Dallas defense would be uglyy without Heiskanen. We better hope he never gets injured long term.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall if a trade like this was proposed IRL. Can't imagine it'd be easy for either team to decide.

At least you put McDavid and not Draisaitl. Draisaitl would be an easy no

I think everyone needs to relax because if Dallas ever did acquire McDavid, then it would be likely on his final contract year and he's said he won't re-sign. There's no way the Oilers would expect to get Heiskanen or Robertson in return but it would likely be the 1st rounder and prospects and a roster player to replace McD. Probably 20 year old Wyatt Johnson, and or Dallas' 1st rounder or a prospect? The haul would depend on whether or not McD would sign long term in Dallas? And of course the Oilers and Stars would have to make the money side of things work especially if Dallas signed McD long term at say $15 mil/per? My 2 cents.

I think it's far better to have a rounded team than having few elite players and being top heavy. In essence, two great pieces are better than one greater piece.

McDavid is unbelievably special. In a non cap world you make the trade. In the cap world we live in I'd rather keep Slavin and Aho.

Bad for Oilers

Mcdavid is a top 5 player all time at worse

Slavin and Aho is not enough

The price I would say though will get laughed at so until a Mcdavid or Draisaitl trade actually happens I cant define their value

Aho is a non top 10 center

Slavin is maybe a top 10D

At best he's a top 5 player of all time. I agree with the rest of the post though.

Orr
Gretzky
Howe
Lemieux

With McDavid competing for that 5th spot vs players like Beliveau, Hull, Hasek, Roy, Richard, Crosby, Lidström, Bourque and Shore.

I wouldn't trade Slavin for McDavid straight up. Let alone include Aho. Keep McDavid, The Canes will keep their chances for a Cup.
Awesome hot take!

You would. So would every GM ever in Hockey...at any level.

McDavid is a top 5 of all time generational player. Slavin is in the upper half of the current top 15 defencemen.

McDavid is being wasted on the Oilers but let's not pretend he isn't what he is.

OP had a proposal and question worthy of discussion. This thread went off the rails with some very silly "wouldn't trade McD for Slavin straight up" buffoonery.

It would make the Canes better. McDavid's game-breaking ability would more than compensate for what they would lose off the back end, where they'd remain quite strong.

Slavin would give the Oilers two solid defenders with him and Ekholm. Big improvement. It does nothing for their goaltending woes though.

The Oilers trade their all-world, generational center, who could well end up one of the all-time greats, for two top-quality players, but still leave a gaping hole in their roster. The value is at least debatable, but it just wouldn't make sense for them.

Look at the standings. What's that offensive superstar doing for you?

Defense wins championships, and Slavin is every bit as good at erasing goals as McDavid is at creating them.
Are you... Serious or trolling?

EDIT: Answer is clear after reading your other posts.

It would absolutely make Edmonton a better team. Zero question. McDavid for Slavin alone would. But you're going to get emotional responses from Edmonton fans, not rational ones.

The Funniest part about this is most of comments are from fans of other teams. Even your own fan base.

I am one of a very few Oiler fans that would trade McDavid and I would laugh at this deal. If Slavin played against McDavid 82 times a year he would get lite up more often then a Christmas tree does over the holidays. Some of the best defence men in the league has been made to look like fools when McDavid is at full health.

As for Playoffs success you do know that Edmonton lost to the eventual cup winners the last 2 playoffs

I look at Slavin as like Ryan McDonagh 2.0 or a younger version. Good offensive game....impeccable defensive game. McDonagh doesn't win any cups until he gets on a team with Hedman, Kucherov, Stamkos and Point with a goalie Vasilevskiy comparable to his previous goalie Lundqvist....all players who are even better than he is. Aho is a very good player but he's not better than any of Kucherov, Stamkos or Point or at least not in my eyes. McDavid is without question the best player in the NHL and has been for a few years. I don't think Carolina fans need to worry about Aho/Slavin for McDavid because it's simply not going to happen. The Canes would need to give up quite a bit more but with a good defensive structure already in place McDavid is exactly what they need.

Mcdavid isn't a top 5 . He may never be a top 5. He may end up as the best player never to win a cup though....unless that's what you mean 😉...regardless Oilers are.not trading Mcdavid until he has had enough.
Top 6 in no particular order as of Nov 2023
