GDT: The 2020 TDL Thread: Part II

What if this Skjei deal falls through and he remains a Ranger? He’d have to play out the season knowing that the team felt that a 1st round pick and cap space were more valuable then he was. Or it would light a fire under him telling him he needs to play a lot better.

They want to keep a core group of veterans on this team that they feel will pull everyone together and provide consistency as they add to the roster and things lik ethat. It's really damn tough to turn over the roster a bunch every year and start back at square one in terms of learning systems and coming together as a team, etc. I think they want to build on what they feel they have going lately and have that carry over into next season rather than start all over again.....

Great post. Couldn't have said it better myself and I have tried.

They have a good thing going here. This team is coming together before our eyes. There defensive structure has been strong for months, and they are way more consistent. Their special teams have been excellent also for a while. We have won 10 out of 13 games since the all-star break. And this is no easy feat. It is always tougher to win games in crunch time or the second half of the season. Teams are now in playoff mode. So what we accomplished is genuine and the top brass has taken notice and acted accordingly. Again great post Levitate.

If they do keep Fast, I really hope he doesn't stay on the Panarin line. I know his plug and play with out ruining any line is a plus, but they need to give someone else a shot there.

So, they didn’t take the easier way out as you feared. I still see Buchnevich and Strome as players that are likely to be moved.

most likely we only got offered a 4th rounder. I’m sorry but we have had a boatload if picks these past two years and have 19 more coming. Not a huge deal.

Both, maybe? They could replace LW in various ways, but Kreider is one of the more unique players in the league. They can probably replace LD internally, and Skjei is about as non-unique as it gets.

Yup, the organization has a habit of falling in love with certain guys for no reason and disregarding others for no particular reason.

I don't think Buchnevich is going anywhere. Not so sure about Strome either, at least not right away.

I hate the Kreider contract, its 2 years too long even if the AAV is under market value. Despite that, they probably have more flexibility than they had 24 hours ago.

I think that’s a silly take. Has nothing to do with”falling in love with certain guys” and discarding others . Kreider took less money asking him to take even less money and two less years is a lowball offer

Not necessarily. Carolina is a better team and probably will have more points than Toronto. If both miss the playoffs I am sure Toronto's pick will not be top 10 so it will not be protected. Toronto pick only top 10 protected.

This pick is the inverse of that Zucc deal. 1 Jamie Benn goal and 1 fewer Paul Fenton contract offer away from 2 unprotected 1st round picks. Now we need the Leafs to crash into bottom 7 in the league and the Canes to miss in any fashion and win one of the three top 3 picks on a ~5% combined chance.

I think you almost have to move Buchnevich this summer to get a LD

If they have legitimate goals to make the playoffs next season, you can't go into the year with Lindgren/Hajek/Staal on the top pair

I don't think so. Let's say TML finishes in bottom 10 and Car finishes #15. Carolina can choose to give us the Tor pick and we will get the 20-21 Tor 1st, whether or not it is a lottery pick. In this way, both 1sts are now lottery protected.
 
Well as I look at standings I guess it could be possible toronto's pick becomes a top 10. I still don't think it will happen but I guess if it did it sucks because we would defer and and get their 2021 pick. How come we get that shaft with all of these conditions lol
I think best case scenario is both teams miss the playoffs and the picks end up in the 11-15 range.
