Why would they not be shooting for the playoffs?

This isn't that difficult, Kreider was more important to the team next year and moving forward so they did what they had to to lock him up. As a result, they needed to clear some cap space so they got rid of a guy whose performance was middling, that they felt they are in a better position to replace.

There's no one to replace Skjei today though. You feel okay going into a playoff series with Marc Staal on the top pair?

Agreed. Re-sign Kreider, deal Skjei lose Shesty (obv not the GMs fault) all but guaranteeing no playoffs, but self rent Fast?

Losing Shesterkin is the biggest barrier to the playoffs at this point. Not what we did with our moves.

they were never going to base their moves on making the playoffs this yesr though.

I don't think Shesty will be out long term. Georgie is still here anyway and he's been playing light's out.

I love how everyone expected more for Skjei but have been complaining for a year and a half how bad he has become.

It's peak NYR HFboards. Literally every GDT & post game "Skjei is trash", Gorts trades him for a 1st "OMG why did we do that , we got fleeced" .Same ones complaining about the cap prior to the trade as well still can't make them happy.

If the offers for Fast were no more than a third round pick, that's close enough to valueless that they may have just decided keeping Jesper in the organization with plans to re-sign were safer than letting him go elsewhere and potentially irritating him.

They have 2 AHL goalies right now.

There’s no need to rehash Kreider’s signing argument back and forth. The Rangers organization clearly put the emphasis on “now” and the next four seasons and I won’t argue that the Rangers will be worse during that timeframe.

Skjei moved to provide offsetting cap relief makes sense too, including to address expansion protection concern. If he’s healthy I want to see Rykov up and ADA - Trouba pairing please.

Skjei hadn't progressed in 3 years and was never outperforming his deal. Great job to move on.

Namestnikov is better than Fast and got a 4th. There's just no market for an 8-12 goal winger, no matter how much of a coach's pet he is. Keeping him is fine.

Roll with Lundqvist while Igor is out, let him have this curtain call. If he's traded or bought out next year bring in a cheap vet backup and we are in good shape there.

You don't have to be 100% buyers going for the Stanley Cup or 100% sellers trying to tank for a top 3 pick at the deadline.

They want Kreider here for the next several years as this team starts to compete, they dont have a Skjei replacement right now but they had 3 young dmen emerge in a major way this season and have a very deep prospect pool.

There is obviously more work and more roster turnover to come in the future.

I would be very worried about playing DeAngelo against an opposition's top players.

Kreider resigned, Fast self-rented and all after Shesterkin gets injured. The Rangers are the 6th worst team in the NHL without Shesterkin, they wont make it. Lost a chance to add a first and a pair of seconds by holding on to Kreider and Fast. Lunacy.

If you look at Georgiev's game logs- he's generally either lights out or atrocious on any given night.

So if he goes on one of his hot streaks it isn't implausible that we keep winning games.

They could be waiting on hold for a trade call. Since they haven't announced the Skjei deal yet they are probably still in line.

Because they have no goalie? FLA fans are celebrating Trocheck leaving. Skjei replaces Slavin. Vatanen is not going to save the team on defense but will help their PP.

Trading skjei could just as easily be a nice palliative to those who were so quick to say 'same old rangers' ignoring cap issues and mis-evaluating defensemen when kreider resigned. This front office continues to surprise me, personally.

So what happened to UFA Fast? He just walks away?
