Think it has to be this year or next and Chia kinda already hinted to it not being this year since will be so high.

You can either trade up or trade down for a late rounder and use that to pay though. Personally I'd deal our early 2nd and a third+ to grab a mid 2nd and a late 2nd, if possible. That way you still get a good player and your next year's 2nd is still available as a trade chip next year.

I thought it had to be your own pick unless the other team agreed to it, like SJ did for Todd's compensation.

I'm a little confused in regards to the whole compensation thing.

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, teams would receive a second-round draft pick if a transaction happens during the season and a third-round pick if one occurs in the off-season...

...A coach’s season ends when his team is eliminated from the playoffs, while seasons for GMs and presidents of hockey operations are deemed over following the conclusion of the NHL Draft in June.

On April 24, 2015, the Edmonton Oilers announced Peter Chiarelli's hiring as General Manager and President of Hockey Operations. A 2nd rounder is owed.

On May 19, 2015, Todd McLellan was named Head Coach of the Edmonton Oilers. A 3rd rounder is owed.

On June 15, 2015 the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning four games to two in the 2015 Stanley Cup Finals.

On June 26-27, 2015, the NHL entry draft occurred.

Chychrun isn't far behind Ekblad and he has a very good chance of being in the NHL next season.

Sergachev needs another year imo to work on his defensive deficiencies. He's not a liability or anything but he doesn't have a habit of running around in the DZ once the opposing team starts cycling. Another year in the O to hone his defensive positioning would definitely be beneficial.

Agreed. Sergachev has great physical skills and skating, but he really struggles with gap control and the nuances of the defensive game like switching coverages when the opposition crosses over on the rush, and breaking up the cycle.(as you said, he has a tendency to chase and gets caught out of position a lot) Sergachev has a big upside and a really good offensive acumen, but he is a long ways from being a defender in the NHL in my opinion. He will need at least one more year in the OHL.

I still don't understand the rationale of owing compensation on a coach. If you fire him, he should be free to find a job elsewhere, especially in the offseason.

The GM thing is more understandable. In the case of Chiarelli, he had a lot of information available to him on the draft last year. He would have been talking all year with Boston's scouts, and would have had a pile of 'insider' information to take with him to Edmonton. What information does a coach bring with him to his new team? Once he leaves, his old team has a new coach and system, thus making his information irrelevant.

I'm really starting to think he's going to go #2 this year. His skillset is just way too tempting for teams to pass on.

Ya, 2 might be a stretch, but I definitely have him top 4, and ahead of Puljujarvi.... I have Chychrun at 3.

He will certainly be a dominant winger in the NHL. I think what could make him go 2 or 3 is a team like Toronto or Columbus picking at those spots. If they think he can play C in the NHL, he is probably a better fit for their team than Laine. I don't know that anyone would actually pass on Laine at 2 though. I certainly wouldn't.

Laine and Matthews are a tier above him, but I'm starting to see a second tier with him and pulju.

Matthews/Laine
Matthews/Laine
Dubois
Pulju
Juolevi(?)
Sergaechev
Tkachuk(?)
Chychrun

It's between him and Chychrun for me at #3, I sway back and forth between them.

Though I wonder how far he actually is from the NHL. He seems really well rounded, a poster mentioned he could spend a year in the Q, but I think he could crack a roster next season and not look lost.

You have chychrun that high? And do you see him above sergaechev/julovei(?)? Personally I feel their all in the same tier and you have to decide whose game you like better style wise, and I have him lowest out of the 3

I think you're putting too much weight into the WJCs if you have Juolevi above Chychrun.

I don't think there's a single part of Juolevi's game that is better than Chychrun's, to be honest.

I feel they are very similiar offensively with a slight edge in d to chychrun, but I feel olli has more room in his game for growth than chychrun

Not a fan of Chychrun he reminds me of Zach Bogosian. That's a bad thing.

Some more highlights from Jonathan Dahlén. This is from the playoffs where he had 6 goals and 1 assist in 5 games :amazed:

If this kid doesn't go in the 1st round something is seriously wrong...

Apparently Alex Nylander is on loan so he could play in the AHL next season.

I don't see Oilers dropping so low that it would make sense for them to pick Nylander. Then again if you'd take Nylander over the other top RWs I would have to disagree with you.

Looking at how Yakupov is played it's obvious he's gone after this season which makes me think we need another RW and only options for me are Puljujärvi or Laine. If they're gone when we pick I'd take a dman or Dubois.

Aside from Matthews or Laine, both of whom can replace either Yak/Eberle, I think the Oilers should just get Chychrun.

Even if we're pushed to 5th, I see the top 3 being Matthews and the Finns followed by Dubois. Chiarelli would have no excuse not to pick Chychrun

Taking any and all Oilers need to be bigger bias out of the equation, I think Nylander is the best right winger in the draft. Laine is a left winger. He can play right wing, but has played much better when on his off wing. I would take Nylander over Puljujarvi. Nylander, like Hall, is an offensive driver. He creates offence with his speed and craftiness. For those wanting to trade Hall, remember that he is one of 2 offensive drivers on this Oiler team, and this Oiler team is one of the worst offensive teams in the league. Shut out 7 times this year. Pathetic. Careful what you wish for.

I wouldn't take Nylander untill around 8. But some people really care about the AHL eligibility so I just put it out there.

I see. Yeah I've seen people wondering about that. I'd also like to know what's Juolevi's situation, anyone know if he's also AHL eligible?

It's pretty crazy that in this year's top 3 all are AHL eligible next year.
