Magnus Puljujärvi or Jessi Paajarvi?

I think it's probably just the similar last names lol. But god damn are the scouting reports on these players almost identical haha.

That's the thing. I'm lower on Puljujärvi than most guys and the reason being that he reminds me of Pääjärvi quite a bit. I got into a big flame war in the prospects forum after I said that but I think the comparison is valid to a degree. Some people just dismiss it because they have hindsight on their side with Pääjärvi but the fact is that he was a very highly touted prospect who also had a very impressive World Juniors tournament in his draft year. I would be scared of taking him.

Tage Thompson is interesting. Maybe a decent 2nd rounder.

6'5'' 190lbs C playing in the NCAA. 31 points in 34 games at UCONN. First year eligible, but with a late birthday.

His dad is the Islanders' AHL team's head coach.

Might not still be there in the 2nd, he's gaining traction as a 1st round pick. I've never seen him play but his size and numbers are intruiging. Have yet to find even a solid scouting report on him, let alone video...

It would be hilarious if the NHL brass did a fake lottery and had the Oilers logo come up all 3 times. :)

Of course that wouldn't be considered "proper" to pull a joke like that... but the league is a joke with the refs and officiating already... so why not have some fun with the lottery. :)

I see Oilers picking 5-7th so whoever is left between Chychrun/DuBois/Sergachev/Laine, I'll be extremely happy with.

9-12?? Our last 16 games we play SJS, MIN, NSH, STL, COL, SJS, LA, ANA.. ARZ twice, who we never play well against. VAN three times, same thing.

I know we're on a bit of a roll, but those are teams we usually beat. I would be shocked if we finished any higher than 3, which means latest we'd pick is 7.

While this is true, this really isn't the same team as it was a couple months ago, and we played LA and ANA hard last game even prior to adding Maroon, Pardy, and Cracknell.

Laine is a top 3 pick. 2nd overall after Matthews.

Chychrun and Dubois may not be there at 6 or 7.

You go Juolevi if he is left at #5.

Alex Nylander will be money in the bank. Get the Nylander Edmonton has always needed.

I'd take Sergachev over Juolevi.

It's basically Ristolainen vs. Maatta to me.

Easy choice.

im leaning towards Sergachev over Chychurn as well i think he will be the elite defenceman out of this draft.

Like the others, I prefer Sergachev for his ability to play with an edge, his elite shot and his poise. He has the ability get the puck through a crowd of people in a hurry. That's something we lack on the backend. Sekera for one, keeps hitting people's shins.

I would say he's a draft+1 year away from playing in the NHL.

Glad that people agree with me for once

Sergachyov is my guy this draft, no question about it. Last year it was Marner or maybe rather a combination of Marner/Provorov and the year before that was Draisaitl. Looks like the Draisaitl pick is a clear win for me so far. Will be interesting to see how Marner/Provorov pan out compared to Strome and Hanifin (who I still liked but didn't see a lot of).

I agree with you. But last year my pick was McDavid ;)

Of course, but no one on HFOil even remotely entertained the idea that we'd win the lottery, including me. So the discussion was all about Strome, Hanifin, Marner and to a lesser extent Provorov. Predicting that McDavid is going to be amazing is too easy and not any fun.

I hope Puljujärvi will shut your mouth with that Pääjärvi thing. But we'll see.

I don't say it as a slight to Pulju. I don't know where people get the idea that I hate the kid. Sorry for comparing a star prospect to a former star prospect. Maybe Pulju turns out differently, who knows? I like Pulju and wish him the best but I would just be cautious of picking him, that's all. It's not like I would be annoyed if he turned out to be a superstar. I would be as excited for him as anyone else.

Yeah I know, it was clear on the prospects board for a while ago. I agree that I see similarities on scouting reports but by highlights not so much. I've thought that I don't want Oilers to draft Puljujärvi because of the thing with Pääjärvi. Oilers has been bad so long and I don't know if the old Oiler environment affected Pääjärvi. He hasn't been good with STL too though. Maybe environment in Oilers is better now but something in Oilers scares me with Puljujärvi. And that's maybe stupid and unnecessary.

If Laine is Oilers pick, that's fine for me.

As long as we do not tell his mother he is coming here it will be fine

(for those who do not recall Nylander's father had verbally agreed to sign in Edmonton until his wife said no and he signed in Washington as I recall--Stauffer broke the story of his signing and then spent a month trying to explain what happenedn)

Thompson is good, and has some upside, but I will caution you on the numbers a bit. I believe he has only scored one goal 5v5 this year. More of a PP specialist.

From his last few games, don't know why his shot is used as his huge weakness all the time.
I'd like to think he has a chance to score against NHL goalies.

Man.. I remember being so high on him. I recall him being called King Magnus when he scored a hatty in a preseason game against the bolts as well I believe.

Yep. I've gotten a lot of hate for the Pääjärvi comparison but people are quick to forget just how good he was. In fact, he's the single biggest reason I'm an Oilers fan. I already liked them before but Pääjärvi was the thing that sealed the deal for me. I absolutely loved watching him play. He was a legitimate top prospect and I think he could've turned out quite differently had he been developed properly. Yet people think it's an insult to compare Pulju to him just because he didn't pan out. It's weird.

Why do you expect the same happen to Pulju?
You expect him to be bust Paajarvi, not the prospect and have you watched Pulju lately?
He's been one of the best players for Karpat, a top team in Liiga, scoring Laine type one timers, close to ppg since WJC, completely different player on the 2nd half, destroyed the WJC and still gets comments like I doubt he can transfer his scoring to NHL, lucky goals basically, where's the Paajarvi in Pulju, could Pulju be just better?

Pulju is bigger than Paajarvi, 50 games so far 28 points, Paajarvi had 17 in SHL, at U-20 Paajarvi had 7 points in 6 games, Pulju 17 in 7 games.

You know I really think we end up trading the pick. This team needs immediate help too much. When you get a player like McDavid you don't waste it. I think Chia knows that. Hall, Ebs, Nuge, and others are fairly developed. Add in McDavid, it just equals rebuild is over.

Any way, just a bet, but I think it is traded.

I don't wanna bring this whole discussion up again, especially not here. This is the HFOil draft thread, not the Puljujärvi prospects thread. I don't appreciate you finnish guys coming in here and starting this up all over again. If I wanted to continue that discussion I would post in the thread in the prospects forum. And no I've never said that I think he is going to bust, there seems to be a misunderstanding there. All I've said is that I'm concerned about some parts of his game and that I don't think he is the slam-dunk superstar some make him out to be. It's my opinion, end of story.
