The problem for Stepan, though, is twofold:

1. McDonagh had arbitration rights this summer because he signed his first contract at 21 years old while Stepan signed his at 20. The arbitration rights gave McDonagh more leverage than Stepan.

2. The Rangers have a precarious salary-cap situation now. They have less than $2.2 million remaining, according to Capgeek.com, which is likely not enough to get Stepan signed and be cap compliant without making a corresponding move, be it via a trade, demotion or injury.

If the Rangers want to go big with Stepan, signing him to a six-year contract would also gobble up two years of his higher earning potential as an unrestricted free agent, which he can technically become at the end of the 2016-17 season. A bridge deal for Stepan would give the Rangers a motivated player and more control over their salary-cap situation, but it would provide Stepan with arbitration rights when the contract is up.

A four-year contract doesn't make a lot of sense for the Rangers because it takes Stepan right up until he becomes an unrestricted free agent, which gives him all the bargaining power.

Capgeek has the Rangers with 24 players including 8 defensemen. Thats one over the limit. Stepan makes 25. Everyone keeping reporting $2.18M but they don't look at the number next to it. 24.

agenda is getting him signed.
Like I said earlier I have no problem with the bridge deal as long as its fair value. hes easily a 4.5 million dollar center if he was arb eligible. Fact is hes not....
I firmly believe 2 years at 3.2 get this done. At least pay him more than the guys in same situation that are lesser players.
And yes this kid plays a game for money... But the Reality is it is still a business and other players set the market. Sather should slot him in where its fair and if he doesnt he is treating his #1 center like garbage...

There is no metric by which a rational, sane person could think that Stepan, or any other professional athlete, for that matter, is being treated "like garbage."

With the training camp roster out Peter Trainor looks interesting, has any one seen him play.

Scouting report.

Sure you can. Just because the salaries are large doesn't mean that people should just shut up and feel lucky that they are getting what they get.

Its all relative. If your job / work is bringing in X for your company then that is what sets the tone. For example if a programmer was making 1 million a year but his software was making the powers that be 100 million would he not be in a position to ask for a raise and or what the market will bare ? Sure all these guys are paid tons of money but it is because the business they are in is worth 100's of millions of dollars.

Fans look at sports through the lens of their youth and playing a game wasn't a job. It was enough just to get to play etc. Add to that these guys careers end after only a short amount of time 10 maybe 15 years etc.

Would you begrudge a musical act telling a promoter they wanted more of a cut because their skill set was going to make that promoter a **** ton of money ? Would you tell them to just shut up and accept what someone is willing to pay them for playing a guitar ?

It's like Napster all over again

No-one's saying he has to take the offer, but 'lowballing' him isn't treating him like garbage by any stretch of the imagination.

Stepan has been well treated by the club and in return has done his job well

their hasn't been anything reported other than its just family matter
Where did you hear family matter?

Oh man, not Hedberg. I think Talbot is way more worthy of handing Hank his water bottle.

Off to New York for training camp

i hope some of these players get signed. im really liking Burke and Stevenson. Stevenson seems to be an Chris Neil type ..Burke seems to be a Dubinsky type forward..... youthful depth is always nice to have for future trades or injuries.

I've always liked Peter Trainor, although I'm not sure how well his game would translate to the pro level. Dylan Stevenson interests me too. Really wouldn't hurt to have some home grown tough guys that could play.

other teams can draft their own or sign undrafted UFA tough guys. Rangers for some reason like to bring in vets for that role that usually wears them down due to their age.... Bruins signed Orr when he was a young undrafted player... Jackets drafted Dorsett, Boll, Blues drafted Reaves... why cant the Rangers do the same..

Can't confirm yet, but it sounds like Stepan and the Rangers are fighting over how much "internet money" he'll get.
