Article makes sense to me
Needs to get over 3 million per to get this done.
Sather put himself in this position by not buying out richards this summer.
Now people will blame stepan for holding out. When in reality he was very underpaid on his rookie deal and now they are asking their # 1 center to be severely underpaid on this deal as well.
Tough to swallow..... Dont care how much he loves being a ranger. They are treating him like garbage right now. He has to stand up for what he has done for 3 seasons and get paid

Why do I feel there's an agenda here with this post. The guy will get paid when he has more leverage. Just to put things into perspective, he plays a kid's game for millions of dollars. Nobody is treating him like garbage.

I don't think the Rangers not buying out Richards really has anything to do with the Stepan situation. Sather was going to get him on a bridge contract no matter what.

Really hoping that Burke, Trainor, Stevenson, K.Wilson and R.Graves gets signed to AHL deals. Trainor had about 100 PTS last year in QMJHL and is a LW

You spelled Marc Staal incorrectly. Damn you autocorrect?

Eh, it's the same old stuff from the "you owe it to the team!" crowd. Kadri just got $2.9M. Stepan is a superior player and deserves more money. The front office backed themselves into a corner by signing depth over the summer that they couldn't develop internally.

Precisely. Another bang up job of planning for Sather.

At least we have Pouliot, Zuccarello, and Moore though. That makes contracts issues with your #1 center easier to swallow!

What corner? The Rangers could sign Stepan for $4m and be fine with Powe, Asham and Johnson buried in the minors.

You mean the three players that signed for a combined $1.25 million above minimum salary, and $450,000 above the AHL burying threshold?

There's enough room to sign Stepan to a fair deal considering his status. Not because he owes the Rangers anything, but because he's a RFA coming off a ELC with no arbitration rights.

Yes, but I do think it cockblocked the possibility of a long-term deal, similar to McDonagh.

Can we clone you?

That's awesome. Two more hours I won't be leaving the couch on Sunday.

I won't see my Bills get their ***** kicked. Big deal.

Edit: ****, 11-1, I guess I'll have to.

Can only speak for myself but the only reason I would get frustrated with a player holding out is if they are fighting for money above their market value (really fighting for it, I get posturing for negotiations). Stepan, by all accounts does not appear to be doing this. Seems more of a matter of the comps changing a bit.

Ether way it's their right. Sometimes you gotta look out for #1.

Is it even possible to be underpaid on an ELC?

Another note to keep in mind, Derek Stepan had an extremely low ELC contact. He earned 875k/yr.

Before someone complains about 875k being low, it is in context compared to his production. Similar ELCs for players who matched his production, like Couture and Duchene were 1.25 to 3.2 million a year (if they hit their performance bonuses).

Even Nazim Kadri had the opportunity to make 1.7/mil a season during his ELC (was paid less b/c of his time in the AHL).

That's all largely based in draft position. It's not like they really negotiated better deals or the Rangers put the screws to Stepan. That's just a product of the timing of his development.

It really should have no bearing on what he earns next, IMO.

Yeah, that's like my parents demanding I pay them back for all the food I ate as a child.

Rangers have never been cheap about paying players.

Stepan's ELC just ended with bad timing, this random low Cap ceiling.

Except for Staal and McD, who were 1st round, #12 overall picks, and top 4 D immediately, at age 21, all the recent homegrown guys have had 2-year bridge deals and then longer-term deals at market price.

the only reason for Step to hold out is if he believes he's not as good as his numbers, and this is his only shot at the payday. We know that's NOT true.

With a new coach, Cally and Hags hurt, and the low Cap, he should sign for Kadri money and get his butt into camp. He'll get his big contract extension in less than 2 years.

Streamers? Need to get yourselves into mid-season form and work out any bugs. :)

Appreciate anyone that does stream games, and if someone streamed this it would be most excellent. Can't get MSG.
