I would think any change the occurs regarding free agency wouldn’t come into effect until next offseason. I’m pretty sure that’s how it worked when the CBA last expired during the 2016-17 offseason.

Yeah, I think this CBA expires Dec 1, and the entire QO process wraps up by mid November. I can't see them reaching an agreement before the last minute let alone putting changes in place right away.

I would rather spend the money on Semien then Ray if it gets into a bidding war. I believe we can an will bring Matz back via free agency. That sets 4 of 5 spots in the rotation. Now if Ray is serious about continuing to be a Jay he signs at a reasonable price as he did last off season. Even off a Cy Young that he will win this year, he shouldnt garner more than what we paid for Ryu. If he does the Jays go another route to fill the void in Free Agency or trade.

re: Stroman, I suspect there's a better chance one of us is on the opening day roster than he is. When he was dealt, management were ready to turn the page and keep his voice out of that locker room.

Blair was just on the Fan morning show. Sounded pessimistic that Semien or Ray will be back and thinks the latter is more realistic. Said Semien initially wanted $125m/5 years last winter and said "he's not getting that here, and I doubt his asking price has gone down". Said he expects the Jays will ask Ray what his ask will look like, and if it's not in their ballpark they'll pivot away quickly. His (Blair's) personal view is that Pearson should stay a reliever and that Gurriel could be a trade chip in the offseason. Mentioned Gabriel Moreno and Orelvis Martinez as the two untouchables in the system. Also pointed out a lot of offseason projections are subject to change because no one knows what will come out of the CBA.

Semien wanted 5 x 25 last offseason? I knew there were long term talks, but with only 1 high end season I assumed it was more in the 4 x 18 range. He might not even get 5 x 25 this offseason.

So many blown opportunities throughout the season ended up catching up to them at the end of it all.

Nonetheless, this team deserved to be in the post season, and it's an indictment of the current MLB playoff format that the Jays are on the sidelines while weaker teams have secured a post season berth.

I’ve had similar thoughts on Gurriel being a potential trade chip. Replacing him with a higher ceiling LH OF bat in free agency like Michael Conforto could make sense to balance the lineup.

Not sure what we have with Espinal but his 3.7 fWAR/162 was higher then Bregman, Chapman, Donaldson this year, that’s pretty remarkable really and in the top 10 for 3B fWAR/162. Biggio posted a 3.7 fWAR over his first 159... he should get back to a similar level if given a 2B opportunity. It’s good to know we should be able to replace at least 50 % of Semien’s value at a small fraction of the cost, should he leave. Either way we’re going to have an elite infield. At worst you have Espinal-Bichette-Biggio-Gurrerro. I still want Semien though it’s just a good feeling knowing we’re set either way and if we don’t get him those dollars will be spent else where.

Pretty sure that's an indictment on the Jays winning less games than those teams (unless we're talking a balanced schedule argument, in which case give me the domino meme with 'Paul Godfrey chasing Yankee/Red Sox fans ticket revenue' leading to us missing the playoffs because Chicago gets to play 50% as many games as we do against .500%+ teams).

However this upcoming CBA will definitely open it up to at least 7 teams per league so we'll get some truly deserving 84-78 playoff teams in the near future.

Watching the baseball tonight crew talk about the Jays and how the team will be different next year.

"The Jay's will be different next year with no Marcus Semien"

LITERALLY nobody knows what will happen. They would never do that with the Yanks. They would talk about the bright future and say stuff like "we expect Marcus to be back and I am sure the Yankess are talking with him right now" if Semien played on the Yanks lol

Jose Ramirez via trade would make this lineup unstoppable

Ramirez would be nice but that is a luxury at this point. If Semien does not resign I say go for it and plug Espinal and Biggio at 2B. The problem is that it would cost us more prospect capital and to be honest I would rather wait on Groshans to be ready for 3B. I would rather sign Semien and sign a capable low cost 3B on a short term deal.

Prospects should only be given up for pitching especially when we will have bigger contracts coming up in Guerrero, Bichette and Berrios. Adding Ramirez would make it difficult to retain all.

You really think so?

Absolutely. The only reason it didn't happen this year is because the players know they can use it as a barganing chip in the offseason. There's too much money in the playoffs.

The real shame is the Jays will end up being parroted as the reason its a good idea, when in fact balancing the schedule (and eliminating divisions) is the way to ensure the best teams make the playoffs.

Semien on Jays' future: 'Who doesn't want to be a part of that?' - TSN.ca

Coming off a career-best season with the Toronto Blue Jays, second baseman Marcus Semien said he's open to returning to the team ahead of reaching free agency this winter.

The Blue Jays' season came to an end Sunday despite a 12-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles, as the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox both won to hold on to their wild-card spots.

"We had the best offence in the major leagues, and in my mind, the best starting pitching in the game. Who doesn't want to be a part of that?" Semien said after Sunday's win when asked about his future. "There's little pieces to add to get to the next level. I'm one of them. I think our bullpen is another one. We also have young, young guys getting better.

"We'll see what happens, but I had a great time here."

I think this place overrates what Montoyo does. Seems like he’s always the problem for the pen but he’s definitely getting the suggestions from Pete Walker, who’s apparently a god around these parts. Montoyos lineup construction seemed solid but I really don’t know how much a manager effects a game especially at the pro level. Think you guys overrate it a tad.

Good season tho

7 teams? How would that work if there are three division winners?
Division winner with the best record gets a first round Bye. 2 Division winners and 4 Wild Card winners play a series and 3 of them move on to then make 4 teams in the next round.

Top seed gets bye, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5 all in a best of three series at the higher seed's stadium.

Interesting. I suppose it incentivizes having the best record in the league.

Do wonder though if there is an appetite for just one team having a bye.

Semien at 3B, Biggio at 2B and Espinal in super utility is so optimal for this team moving forward if Semien would agree to 3B.

i think this lineup really lacks an impact bat from the left side though. he would be a perfect fit tbh. but hes going to cost us for sure..honestly with how espinal played he might be very enticing to the indians.
