Player Discussion Thatcher Demko

We're basically at Game #25......check back when we're at Game #55, and Martin has been forced to play a bulk of the starts--something he hasn't done since his stint in the ECHL.

Exactly the concern isn't how Martin performs now. It's that he'll probably tire pretty quickly and there's noone else to give him a rest. It's a big factor.

Schneider, on a VERY favourable contract, with ZERO injury issues, at the top of this game (and getting better), "only" got us a 9th overall pick.

There's a bit of a difference in that Demko actually played a full season as a starter while Schneider did not but, yeah, the injury issues and poor play this season have probably tanked his value.

So Demko is back by mid-January......hopefully Martin can hold the fort until then.....but if the Canucks are dead and buried by Jan. 15th, I'd be in no hurry to rush Demko back.

Even though he is a great story, and I really like him Martin is not exceptional at anything. He's succeeded in making the most of a backup role so far but he's had tons of run support. He also has some big technical holes in his game that will be exposed with better scouting now that he is the starter as well as the exposure that comes with more games played. That's always been the bridge a goalie has to cross to go from backup with excellent numbers to a starter, then a starter who is relatively consistent year over year, then a guy who you can lean on in the playoffs.

Cheering for the guy but the odds are stacked against him going on a long run of maintaining his points%.

Which hip conditions can be treated arthroscopically?

Common injuries and conditions that can be fixed with arthroscopic hip surgery are:

  • hip impingement (femoroacetabular impingement), which limits range of motion and is a major cause of osteoarthritis
  • repair or trimming of a labral tear, where a specialized cartilage called the labrum, which lines the hip socket becomes torn
  • removal of:
    • loose fragments of cartilage inside the joint (which are usually caused by an injury, such as a torn labrum)
    • diseased or inflamed joint lining
    • painful bone spurs

What are the advantages of hip arthroscopy?

A hip scope has several advantages over traditional open hip surgery, because it:

  • causes very little trauma to the joint (which minimizes hip pain and scarring)
  • is generally done on an outpatient basis (where patients return home after the procedure)
  • typically has a short recovery period

What does a dislocated hip look like?

If you’re looking at the injury from the outside, you’ll first notice that your leg is locked in a fixed position, rotated either inward or outward.

Anyone can suffer from a hip flexor injury, although they are most common in cyclists, dancers, soccer players, and martial artists. The hip flexors are a group of muscles that enable the hip joint to bend the knee toward the chest and make it possible to bend forward at the waist.1 Many activities, including kicking, running, and jumping, engage the hip flexors.

With overuse, overstretching, or sudden contraction, the hip flexor muscles may be injured, resulting in pain and limiting mobility.2 Knowing how to treat a hip flexor injury or hip flexor pain may help you reduce the amount of time it takes to recover.

Depending on the severity of the injury, it may take 1-6 weeks for a hip flexor injury to heal. Minor injuries typically require 1-3 weeks of recovery time, while more severe muscle tears can take 4-6 weeks or longer.

Hope for a total recovery

Highly unlikely.

Wish NHL was more open with injuries.

Probably a groin tear of some sort.

Well said. My fear is that Martin is a more low key Andrew Hammond redux. Likeable, sussessful thus far, but not sustainable.

Groin issues are commonly also caused by the hip. It looked like his leg was locked and his hand went to his hip.
Hopefully he recovers 100% because LA is rumoured to be willing to offer quite a dowry for him.

There is a report that it is his knee, but no player grabs their hip if it is their knee and quite often they lay on their side, his leg did not move. I have looked a few times now (pvr) his leg just doesn't move and he hold it up off the ice going to the bench, knee injuries seldom can

Addition by subtraction. Canucks will start winning and the people saying "our pk is soon bad" will realize that Demko was the reason our pk was that bad. He shouldn't have been playing through an injury if he's unable to move across the ice.

You keep making these statements as if they are fact.

Can I ask, what field do you work in?

This aged poorly our PK is just as bad maybe even worse haven’t checked the stats

Benning screwed up this team for years to come, anyone in their prime right now would look at the Benning legacy and know that you have no future in this team in your prime.

If Demko wants out, who could blame him? Once players approach the 'middle-age' of their hockey careers, winning is the only thing that matters. And the Canucks aren't winning this year or next; and beyond that, who knows?

And Demko wouldn't be the first. Horvat will be gone by the deadline; and both Hughes and Pettersson are going to finish out their current contracts in Vancouver, but once they become eligible for free agency, they're as good as gone imo.

Maybe by then there will somebody in the front office with the courage to tell the owner that a rebuild is the only option left.
