Well, tonight definitely complicates things going forward. It's kinda funny that despite the round robin being seven games long, this one loss kinda made even making it to the QF bit of an iffy affair.
Technically, it shouldn't be, because the recipe for making it is pretty simple - 3p from the remaining three games should do it. And we're still playing Germany. Beat them, and we're in. The bad news is however the schedule. We'll be playing them back-to-back after Canada, with less than a day off. Overall, this schedule of ours is really weird. Back-to-back - a day off - back-to-back - two days off - back-to-back - a day off - one more game. And not one time we enjoy the advantage of coming from a rest day to an opponent with a back-to-back.
The good news with these two rest days is that Game 7 of Preds - Jets will be done, and the management should know if anybody's coming. And if somebody's coming, they should be in the box vs. Germany at the latest. And even if no one's coming, they can add Niemi before Canada, give him his usual 4C spot, then use Pesonen to work out any kinks we have higher in the lineup. Even booting Manninen - who has been really underwhelming - and dropping Pessi into his slot could actually give us four lines we can roll and expect to generate at least some offense.
And well, if Murphy's Law decides to kick our hind sides with full force, the final meager solace there is that unlike the WJC, where missing the QF means entering the relegation, with these 9p we have we won't be anywhere near the line. Thinking about that won't make the remaining games such nailbiters, no matter what happens. This tournament is played annually, after all.
