They did not have an unsustainable shooting % on 5v5 actually. Even Mackinnon shot at 13%, which is more of a normal S% compared to what he's had before. They were good and they will continue to be good. Nothing unsustainable.
I mean on-ice shooting percentage which is the shooting percentage of the whole line up when the players are on ice. Even strength Rantanen had 9.59 and MacKinnon 10.86 which are both very high but not completely unsustainable (at least in the case of Rantanen) so I was wrong there. But the powerplay oish% are 18.68 and 19.01 which is ridiculous, and most likely not repeatable.

I know what you meant. And like you said, not unsustainable. And the PP oish%....wouldn't it always be higher since it's more likely to score a goal on PP?

It seems really hard for some to accept that Rantanen is one of the best wingers in the NHL.

Am I the only one who has been underwhelmed by Rantanen? 84 points in NHL and he hasn't stood out against B -level countries. 6 points is fine, but only two assists in 5on5 play. I was expecting a lot more from him! That he would be threat everytime on the ice against these lesser teams, but hasn't been able to create anything 5on5.

Maybe my expectations were too high and I am expecting him to be a driver, when infact he is just complementary player who happened to play with incredible hot MacKinnon this year, which boosted his stats by 30-40 points...
He is playing injured.

This is the situation now...

If Finland loses against Canada and Germany wins against Latvia, Finland vs Germany will be essentially a must-win game... Or Finland might not even make it to the playoffs. And the thing is, while both teams will play back-to-back, Germany will have 8 more hours to rest and Latvia will be a much easier opponent than Canada, so recovery would not be ideal for Finland either.

I think that there's a real chance that during the final day, Finland will be playing against USA with playoffs on the line.

In 1995 IIHF men's world championships Finland lost their first game vs Czech Republic 3-0 not Germany. Check your facts boy.

Dad, how you'r commenting over here wheb you should be in grave??

And yes, I was wrong. This information came from source which I really rely on

Lolled, not sure why. Then I realized I was still month short of legal beer drinking age when Finland skated to the victory of 1995, and that there are players in current men's team roster I could be dad of...

During that sunny spring I was training as a surveyor student on a construction project of highway (#5) between Lusi and Mikkeli... some parts of that highway are already obsolete and too low category (when considering volume of traffic).

Time fly.

Let's do some surveyor bonding! Studying to be one atm, decided to take a different career path in my 30's. Being originally from Mikkeli and living down South, I know that highway very well. Now I have a new appreciation for it. Thank you. It's still a bottleneck during juhannus. However in -95 I was still building tree-houses instead of watching the final, which I have lived to regret to this day. Gladly I got a redo in -11. That night, I was the designated driver. I have made awful decisions.

Veni, vidi, vici (I came, I saw, I conquered).

That phrase maybe Lauri Marjamäki can't use after his stint with the Finnish National Team like Julius Caesar did back in the day.

Coz it's been way too little dangerous Sex-drugs-and-rock-'n'-roll-hockey but way too much safe Disco-hockey under his command.

But here is a beautiful(!?) song to comfort you B-berry:

If Canada gets like 2-3 goals lead early or around the mid game mark, then I hope they just start giving all 4 lines even minutes and go for energy saving mode.

It wouldn't be bad to stamp the remaining 2 passes and use those players as energy savers as well. Three players skip Canada game and play vs Germany and those three players shouldn't be our star players because we will still try to see what happens in the Canada game early on and see if we can beat them and try to go for the group win, but if things go bad then there's that plan B. So let 3 players from 3rd or 4th line rest the Canada game, there's no big risk in that.

He said he's not, and Sakic would've never ever let him go if he was.
It's a minor injury and he can still play, but I guarantee you it's affecting him still. Should prove that Kapanen is taking the face offs over him and Rants has played center in the AHL and juniors (Kapanen has not as far as I'm concerned). He's not been the same even in the playoffs after his injury, it's not like he accidentally scored over 80pts... he isn't playing 100% I can tell you that for sure. Also Sakic let him to participate in the WJC in 2016 while he was suffering a minor injury back then too. He sucked there at first also, but was Finland's best player in the last two games. Hopefully he will be better in the important games this time too.

Nice! Colleaque and fellow home town guy!

My studies happened during time when early GPS systems were in their test phases and YLE provided a particular antenna system to correct USA/NSA induced systematic error to a satellite coordinate data (due technologic novelty military tech-wise, and due Gulf War) more adequate, and the internet was still coming to a vogue of wider audiences. We made preparatory field studies of ground and base-rock profiles (by ground drilling in a forest during winter/early spring '95) and soil cross-sections for planning needs of future road crossings between Lusi and Hietanen, and measured the lines of the highway during the construction, using tachymetric equipment. My exams and studies in the craft are already obsolete. Then there was need of group of 3 to 4 guys in basic job that require now only one guy (due technic developments).

Anyhow, useful profession. Later I've made some plans of cemetaries using the knowledge. /OT

On-Topic: Jukurit Mikkeli was beer league team those days, and best use for old loysy local ice hall was a concert of Peer Günt. Hopefully Jukurit will get better presentation in NT level too. If not for NT of Finland, then maybe from Team Denmark... or Team Korea. ;)

Good luck for your endeavors! :)

Nashville out.

Hope Rinne comes after his struggles in the last Games.
Best Option would be Saros but no contract

I truly hope Rinne doesn't come over and fixes his f***ing head up for next season. We don't need any easy goals let in by him. He's a sieve. Coming from a Finland, Kärpät and Nashville fan.

Tolvanen won't come either since he has no playing touch and Salomäki wouldn't be an improvement over anyone on the roster. There's probably no one coming over.

Yeah he has been trying way too hard and making awful decisions, dekes and passes in the offensive zone. Hopefully he can get his shit together against bigger opponents.

About his points in NHL... do you think MacKinnon scores 97 without Rantanen?

Would fit in great. Just that if they don't feel the need to add a bottom 6 player.. I mean he could play in TOP6.

At this point it´s hard to fit him in the team. I would like him, but we may need a pure center more. We should have stamped Niemi in the first place. Or atleast instead of Palola. At this point I doubt that Suomela will end this tournament in lineup.

Defense is real problem. Positioining has been bad. Even Kivistö has been disapointment. Under preasure they do horrible choiches and they haven´t really been under preasure. And it´s a real light weight defence. Can they really win battles against the big guns. Only Heiskanen and Riikola (partly because he has played quite little) get out of class...

salomäki?

Basically a nice addition with grit and tenacity. But nothing more. Welp, he might be able to play okay in any of the lines, replacing Clay Woman in the first, Kaps on the second and so forth. But then again, it would have a negative effect on the team spirit, which in this particular case smells already almost like teen spirit. In the end he would bring quite little value added on the table compared to the current squad. So, all in all, let Salomäki return to his ancestors' gyms to iron his muscles further.

So, with NSH out, we can potentially add a goalie and a forward, possibly even two.

The goalie situation is pointless to speculate with, either we get one of Rinne/Saros or not.

With skaters, it's more interesting. Technically adding any two of Niemi/Tolvanen/Salomäki would be a big boost to our offense, but we'd then only have 7 D to run with for the rest of the tournament. It's not a huge risk, since losing two d-men in one tourney is relatively unusual, but still.

Personally I'd probably add the two forwards.

Tolvanen-Granlund-Rantanen
Savinainen-Aho-Teräväinen
Pesonen-Suomela-Kapanen
Mäenalanen-Niemi-Anttila

Some might say it's pointless to add Eeli, since he hasn't played for a month, but let's keep in mind that he's been actively practicing this entire time.

Yeah I was thinking two more forward option (third line is sort of nothing line at the moment), but I sincerely do not like what our defence looks like right now. I have been critizining Mikkola bit this season. He has sometimes too much energy for his own sake and his opening passes are sometimes questionable. Not yet the stellar stay at home d at this point. But god we need some force to our own zone.

There is two way of looking Marjamäkis team selection. Other is that it was bold move and I can raise my hat for it. Other is that he did sell his soul and under preasure selected team that other wanted. Nobody can change their hockey view/playbook in few months. Now he has a team that can´t really play his hockey (because in tough situation cooaches tend to go to old habits even if their new system has been making in for older period).

Other thing with Marjamäki is that I don´t like his center decisions. In big picture we have center problem and that´s not his fault. But he makes it worse by trying to be creative. Last year we had that Pihlström experiment. Pesonen as center has been fine, but I don´t think he should play center. And some of the selections seems to be made thinking he can play also center like Manninen (disapointment) and Mäenalanen (been mild surprise). The result ends up looking half-assed-

Nah, doesn't matter if Rantanen led the Avs in goals last season. According to HfBoards MacKinnon's previously bad seasons never existed and the Avs are still a bad team if it wasn't for MacKinnon and everybody's a product of MacKinnon who's been better than Barkov all along now.
