Team Finland WC 2023

I didn't expect Vatanen to come back so strong after his inury but him, Hartikainen and Filppula certainly are a big factor why geneva eliminated the reigning champion in the semis tonight. But you guys have such a deep pool of players to chose from I fully expect suomi as a contender as always despite who will make the team or depending on who's available from the NHL

That's right, but the very biggest reason for me for why I expect a strong performance is that the gold finger Jukka Jalonen is still the head coach.

Pärssinen is playing again after an injury. If he shows up on Jukka Jalonen's camp early, I think he has a chance to make it into the team.

Great to hear that he's back. I would imagine that he gets invited to the camp if Preds don't make the playoffs (slight chance still). However, I don't think he is given a spot right away.

Nashville is out now. Yeah he has to earn his spot. My guess is that he will, but if we get an overload of good players from NHL after some playoff rounds, then it will get interesting.

Florida Panthers has secured their playoff spot. It's still interesting with who takes the last playoff spot, Islanders or Pittsburgh. Both have 1 game remaining. Islanders is ahead by 1 point now. Pittsburgh plays an away game against the easy Columbus and Islanders has a home game vs Montreal. Montreal should be a harder opponent than Columbus, but at least there's the home advantage for NYI. I see some importance in this, because I want Mikael Granlund to have some time to reset after the season and before hopefully joining the WHC team. Maybe he can go to his cabin in Finland for few weeks in the nice weather that we have now. Mark my words, Granny will be a beast again in the NT despite of the worse performance during the NHL season. I was super impressed how he joined the team last year to immediately look like the MVP of the team or something, even with some jet lag. He just overperforms in the national team. He's 1 of those guys.

I have no doubts about Granlund's national team performance. He always delivers. The trade to Pittsburgh has been bad for him so far. Playing on the 3rd line with some grinders is not the ideal role for him.

Granlund always has problems when he changes clubs. He should always play for the same club. But the Leijonat is his platform. Then he feels good.

Pittsburgh is out. So that part is confirmed now.

All of the playoff matchups aren't locked in yet so that's the next interesting part. Dallas is giving Colorado some pressure. It's still possible that we get Florida vs Carolina on the first round of playoffs. If Carolina doesn't win their next game, then New Jersey can over take them, making CAR vs NYR matchup.

The last regular season game is Carolina playing at Florida vs Panthers. Kind of funny that we can get this same match up right after in the playoffs. Florida will give their all in that game, because they don't want to face Boston. It's completely in Florida's own hands if they face Boston in the first round of playoffs or not, because Islanders has played all of their regular season games already, so Panthers can over take them.

I'll list some, but not all match ups that are still possible:

Carolina vs Islanders. Most likely out come. I hope that we get one of those other options below.

Carolina vs New York Rangers. How sick would it be if NYR eliminates Carolina on the fist round.

Carolina vs Florida Panthers. A lot of guaranteed Finns for the WHC team if this match up happens. Jalonen & Lehtinen could start making plans based on this already if this match up happens. Basically it means that we are rather close in confirming that our team will be stacked. Let's not also forget the magnet effect where having many good players early attract more good players.

Florida vs Boston is also a good match up. As we know, Boston is super good this season.

Colorado's opponent is Seattle or Minnesota. Dallas has the same thing, their opponent is Seattle or Minnesota as well. Seattle and Minnesota have about same amount of wins, so it probably doesn't matter which team gets what opponent here.

What's people's thoughts on Laine.

I think he was up for it if healthy. It's odd because his injury timeline suggests he'll easily be back in time but he has had a lot of injuries this season. And previous seasons. Do you think he'll join?

Personally I think Granlund, Armia, Kapanen, Jokiharju, Maata, Valimaki and Saros will join. That's already a huge haul by Finland's usual nhl list.

I'm rather pessimistic about Laine but I would love to see it.

Think Parssinen may not get called and Maccelli contract will rule him out unfortunately.

Round one exits will surely present interesting options though.

That would be a good haul, Saros would be the biggest and best get on that list. You know you're absolutely set in nets and that of course is always such a big thing.

I guess we cant count Laine out because of his injury. I dont think we will get as many nhl players as people here think.

My prediction(feel free to disagree):

Pesonen - Mi.Granlund - Kapanen
Ma.Granlund - Suomela - Hartikainen
Rajala - Lammikko - Armia
Sallinen - Björninen - Anttila

Välimäki - Jokiharju
Lehtonen - Vatanen
Määttä - Lindbohm
Ohtamaa - Pokka

Säteri - Olkinuora - Lehtinen

There are just so many signs that he would join.

1. Home city tournament. He won't get many chances during his career to play in a tournament of this significance at his home city. It might be his last chance.
2. His willingness to join last year wasn't fake.
3. A potential chance to play with Barkov who is one of his best mates if those personal life issues aren't too big burden for Barky. Boston 100% eliminates Florida on the first round. It was a huge mistake for Florida not getting points vs Carolina last night. They sealed their own fate.
4. A chance to be coached by Jukka Jalonen, who was his 2016 gold coach.
5. Laine has a contract for next season.

My feeling is that Pärssinen will get called, but he has to play well in the camp. If Nashville went to the playoffs and had a first round exit, then there would be a good chance that he wouldn't be called. There was this from last night, if you missed it:

Yeah this team will probably end up having more NHL players than last year's team. Last year was a bit disappointing with the NHL reinforcements, although Lindell, Heiskanen and Granlund all proved to be helpful.

Loads of time for Laine to get over his injury. And I agree, Florida will drop pretty quickly against Boston. My guess is in 5 games. I'm oppotimistic about nhlers. 10 or more is my guess.

Wow, Pärssinen really schooled that Gus - very promising indeed and he might be a nice piece regarding assembling the FIN-WIN-puzzle anno 2023.
Rinne perhaps can help Winland to get him released from ahl-duties, make that call, Pekka ;)

It was unreal goal but I noticed
Milwaukee are in ahl playoffs so Parssinen will be going there I'd say.

That's a good point, but I ignored this because I thought that Pärssinen has made such a breakthrough on the NHL level that they wouldn't send him to AHL anymore.

I agree. I see 4-0 most likely, but maybe 4-1. Florida needs Tkachuk and Barkov and rest of the guys to over perform to get more than these results.

Some bad news. Jokiharju only played 3 minutes in Buffalo's last game. Let's hope that he recovers quickly.

"Sabres defenseman Henri Jokiharju left the game in the first period with a lower-body injury. There was no update."

From the teams who didn't make the playoffs I hope we get:
- Granlund
- Laine (but don't know how serious the injury is)
- Saros
- Maccelli (probably not since contract but I can hope)
- Pärssinen
- Välimäki
- Määttä
- Armia

From the playoffs.. it would be a bg surprise if Bruins don't beat the Panthers so I would take Barkov and Lundell. Luostarinen has had a good season so maybe him too.

Jokiharju as well but I doubt he comes now because of that injury. Lankinen can come too if he wants, but I don't know if we need him if we have Saros. Ristolainen usually doesn't join the team, but maybe this time.. don't exactly mind if he doesn't.

Expecting Florida and maybe Rangers to lose in first round, this is what we could get:

Luostarinen-Barkov-Laine
Pärssinen-Lundell-Kapanen/Kakko
Granlund-Suomela-Armia
Hartikainen-Björninen-Anttila

Ma.Gra

Välimäki-Jokiharju
Määttä-RR
Lehtonen-Kemiläinen
LindBomb-Vatanen

SAROS-Lankinen

Do we have good chances to get players from 2nd round? Getting one of the Heiskanen,Lindell, Hintz, Hakanpää / Aho,Kotkaniemi,Teräväinen / Rantanen,Lehkonen combos would be insane boost

and Tolvanen. I actually really like Tolvanen at the moment. Solid on the defensive end too.

Colorado will beat Seattle 4-0/4-1/4-2 in my opinion. Lehkonen just got healthy for Colorado, which makes them even stronger now. I wonder if Landeskog could make a surprise recovery as well? Then it will be Colorado vs Boston Stanley Cup finals.

I think so, because I think we are ahead of schedule compared to last year and we did get Heiskanen and Lindell like that. Granlund was probably a second round exit player as well. I can't remember, but I do remember that he arrived earlier than Lindell and Heiskanen.

Nashville dropped first round to Colorado. Dallas also was out first round but Nashville was sweeped -hence why granny joined earlier. Otherwise, I agree 💯 on your take regarding tolvanen. Solid two way player. Would love two pp units with solid snipers. First with Laine and second with Golvanen.

Oh I remembered wrong then. Ty for looking that up. We might still be on schedule for getting some 2nd round exits this time, but quick series would be preferred to increase the odds for that. Knowing Jalonen he'd only take some big time players at that point. His words back then were "we will only take players who we think will help us win".

Wish we knew something about our NHL guys but the team has in general been very slow with announcing additions so maybe this time too
