Team Finland WC 2023

So Maccelli and Välimäki have established themselves as NHL-regulars this season? Luostarinen has improved a lot point-wise. Sorry i've been not following NHL so closely this year. My main focus have been on Markkanen. Barkov is having a weak year for some reason. Laine's been good but Columbus have struggled.

I got a day off, so might as well write some sort of prediction line up since the battle lines has been drawn in NHL. One EHT tournament left for the european league players and some practice games during the camp but i believe Jalonen already has list of players from Europe who can make the team. According social media Jalonen and Lehtinen are in North America, first they were in Dallas and today or last night in Florida.

Lundell - Barkov(A) - Laine
Ma.Granlund - Suomela - Hartikainen
Pesonen - Luostarinen - Ruotsalainen
Sallinen - Björninen - Anttila(C)
M.Aaltonen, Oksanen

Lehtonen - Jokiharju
Lindbohm - Vatanen(A)
Friman - Kemiläinen
Välimäki - Pokka

Oksanen is a big mystery to me. We are same age and he struggled to fit to low tier U17 team back in the day, he was really bad. Only way he could fit that team, is for him to become a d-man. Something clicked and he became a good d-man until he went to NCAA where he became a forward again.

Now he's a potential name to WHC squad :D

Maccelli and Välimäki have been pretty good. Välimäki has his confidence back and signed a new contract recently. Maccelli probably needs to shoot more but he is pretty damn gifted at dishing the puck. Reminds me of a younger version of MG64 with his saucers. I really hope Matias renews his contract asap. Barkov for sure having a down year but so is his team. Laine in my opinion seems inconsistent in his effort as usual.

Some recent Maccelli highlights.

I know Jalonen has a lot of faith in euro guys (rightfully so) but I'd take Kapanen and Armia too. I think the skillets would match perfectly with loustarinen. That would be a perfect match for me as second line.

4th line and 1st line agree. 3 line definitely has Granlund, Hartikanen. Maybe I would go with Aaltonen centering. Although I hate to leave out pesonen. Ah. Too much talent.

Also maata for defence definitely.

I think this is what I hope for.

I think pesonen will fit well with Barkov and Laine. He will bring a lot a speed and energy to that line. Lundell would fit better probably to balance the line defensively but I think shifting Lundell to third line would make a really really strong top nine so I'm doing it. Pesonen can still bring a lot of what Lundell would on that line and has greater speed which would be useful to that line.

Kapanen and Armia are playoff monsters. Both have super high ceilings when the play to their full ability. Kapanen has had some games where I thought this guy could be an elite superstar. For whatever reason though both players go missing for long stretches throughout a season. Like they get bored or something. I do think international tournaments suit both down to the ground. I had no fear last year with Armia. I 100% knew he would perform and I feel the same way with both these guys. All three motivated could be a beast of a second line full of speed and a 2 way game. Luostarinen and Armia have the perfect defensive capabilities and enough playmaking to free Kapanen a little bit to express himself.

Replacing Manninen in a proven line was causing me a conundrum until I thought of moving Lundell from line 1. You may be think why is this line 3 but I suspect ice time to be fairly even with line 2 keeping a fresh team throughout tournament. Lundell could score a boatload in a tournament with Hartikainen. Also despite playing with two experienced tournament vets, he would get the feeling that this is HIS line. It's a two way heaven line that will be brutally hard to match up with for many many teams in the tournament.

Fourth line. If I need to explain fourth line then shame on you. Having said that, seeing everyone has picked the same says volumes. Throughout group stage it will be defensive prowess until knockout games when Antilla will whisper to Barkov "I'm the number one guy from here on out".

Defence is mostly stay at home guy with puck mover/scoring threat. I think Risto would want to come. He almost came last year only for injury and I think that was genuine. I know he is the butt of jokes for how his career has gone lately but I think he has learned a lot of humility from it. I think he needs some sort of positive event to push him in the right direction. It's more a feeling than anything else that he would be a big player for Finland in this tournament. The talent is there for sure. I honestly think it's about getting in the right headspace and feeling loved. Put him top dog with experienced vet like Lehtonen and I think he will soar. I know many will probably disagree but the Risto of youth tournaments is still there waiting to break out.

Saros is Saros.

@David OSullivan nice lineup. Pretty much the best case scenario at this point. Would be awesome to have Barkov and Laine leading the team in their home town. Maybe Lundell would play with them as he has played with Barkov this season. I guess it depends on the center situation if they can afford to play Lundell as a winger.

I hope Maccelli gets re-signed soon so he could participate. I think he could also be a good addition next to Barkov and Laine. He's just an amazing passer. Just imagining him creating scoring opportunities for Laine gets me excited.

The only thing I don't agree is calling Kapanen "a playoff monster". Where did that come from? I don't think he has been anything special in playoffs. He has skills but also some motivational issues or something. He has so much talent though and it is frustrating that he so often doesn't put in the effort. I would welcome him on the team of course. I'm sure that Jalonen can get the most out of him.

Playoff monster might be my over excitement but he has scored playoff goals And tournament goals. I have high faith in him to perform to a very high level at WC.

Maccelli on the top line would be offensively brilliant but might affect the defensive stability which I'm a stickler for.

Honestly, something tells me Laine and Barkov turn down the tournie and I wouldn't want to see risto there. We shall see what happens. Still crossing my fingers for laine and barky to participate

I actually think all will accept. Jalonen isn't going to coach forever and there's only so many chances to win gold with your country. These guys haven't won a lot yet either. Plus home games and all have contracts. I'm pretty certain we get all the names IF healthy.

Kapanen in his current form is horrible and if were Jalonen i would not select him. I left Armia out because he's had injuries this year, so maybe he decline's because he wants to focus on rehabilitation. But of course he could say yes since he's been injured and the season has been short for him. I have no problem if Armia is in, but Kapanen has been incredible lazy and uninterested this season. There's no room for players like that.

Im a Red Wings fan and somehow i completely forgot that Määttä ever existed, and that he re-signed just a short while ago. That's how good stay-at home D he is . Quite embarrassing moment but yeah Määtä is in, if he wants.

Too much talent indeed, not an easy job for Jalonen & Lehtinen.

Crossing my fingers. Would love to see an NHL loaded team. Also, Määttä is a very underrated player in his current form. Very happy to see it's working out in Detroit.

I d take Kapanen all day long. Super easy decision for me. Too much upside and am pretty certain he ll be at his best for Finland.

People are catching on about Maata... he was fancy stats darling, everyone he played with did better and now he has a new contract and Stevie Y is retooling that blue line.

Yeah. I can't make a solid reason really for picking Risto over some proven WC defenders. I just think it's what he needs and could perform really well. But definitely I could see how you would find it hard to exclude world cup and Olympic champions for someone who hasn't given a hoot about joining the NT team in the past so I hear ya. I think I just want to see how he would do to be honest but that's a very soft reason for making a selection choice. Not sure Jalonen will pick Risto but let's see.

I'm certainly not as sold to taking Risto as I am Kapanen.

Good times approaching my friend. U18s in Switzerland which commence in roughly 46 days and then on to the WHC in Tampere/Riga a few weeks after the former is over!

Yep and Määttä seems to always perform well in the Finnish national when he joins.

We seem to have a lot of goalie options with Saros, Husso and Lankinen. Then there are last year's golden starting goalies Olkinuora and Säteri. Also Kähkönen from the NHL to mention a few, but we probably already have enough options without him.

Most of you guys seem quite confident that Florida Panthers won't make past the first playoff round. I think it's a bit early to make that assumption, but how fun would that be if that would happen. Our center depth would be very good after that.

I haven't been following European leagues too much this season, so I'll only list some obvious picks and for that reason I'll leave some slots open but of the NHL players who have contract for the next season and who won't most likely make it into the playoffs my most obvious picks and a bit boring list of players would be:

Laine-X-X
Hartikainen-Suomela-X
Armia-Pärssinen-Kapanen
Anttila-Björninen-Sallinen/Lammikko

Lehtonen-Jokiharju
Välimäki-Vatanen
Määttä-Ristolainen
X-X

X = insert more Jalonen's Euro familiars for now until we get confirmation on which NHL teams won't make it into the playoffs or which teams will be eliminated after NHL playoffs round 1. Filppula is an obvious pick if he's not retired from the NT. As others said, I'd also love for Maccelli to sort out his contract situation so we would see him in the team. It's a good base to start the team with and it's probably even needless to say how much would the team change if any big teams with a lot of Finnish players with contracts would be eliminated from the NHL.

Looks really promising, if both Sweden and Finland have a lot of accepted invitations that matchup is super exciting!

I’d even go so far as to say if Sweden and Finland were to play in the elimination round it would be the most exciting swe-fin matchup since the 2011 final!

If i was Jukka Jalonen, i would go all in NA roster, i think it would help his NHL head coach case.
99,9% sure that will never happen but..
