McDavid as Captain, Crosby, Weber and/or MacKinnon with an A?

Or Crosby keeps the C and McDavid, MacKinnon and/or Weber with the A?

No way is Weber on this team, he's slowed down considerably. Total liability on big ice surface.
My bad. I'm watching the Montreal game and I've got Weber's on the brain - seeing him with the C. Although, I'm pretty sure some people have had him on their teams - I am too lazy to go back and look.

Doughty/ Another D-Man with the A or just the 3 big centers?

I hope Marner makes it so he gets another chance to play well in a big moment and change the narrative, but I wouldn't blame them at all for leaving him at home. It's not just that he didn't produce, he looked scared. All those puck over glass penalties in the playoffs wouldn't make me confident about him in a gold medal game.

He did play well at the World Championships, but there's really no pressure there. He was a mixed bag at the Juniors, which is real pressure. He tries to be a hero or gets too much into his own head in the biggest moments. I find it hard to trust him at this point.

I like him, too. I really do. I watch every Leaf game and he's my favourite player - believe it or not. But there's too much riding on one mistake and if he pulled a "puck over glass" or a big giveaway in the GMG, well, I'm an old man and there's only so much I can take.

Really curious to see who gets the C, will it be Connor or will they stick with Sid. The other letter will likely be Bergeron/Doughty I think.

If Sid keeps the C, don't you have to give McDavid and A in preparation of giving him the C next time?

In Toronto, where we doing EVERYTHING RIGHT, we have a C and 3 A's. Not sure how it's done on lesser teams - of course, EVERY team is a lesser team than the Leafs.

For D:

Theodore-Pietro
Toews-Makar
Nurse-Doughty
Ekblad (assuming health) or Hamilton if Ekblad isn’t fully recovered as the 7th D.

Solid mix of size, speed, skill, and experience. Thats about as good of a list as I’ve seen and can put together. Lots of strong two way D men on that list who solid all situations players.

Chabot and Girard just miss, Chabot for me is a lock for 2026 though.

The Top 4 will chew up a ton of minutes.

I'd prefer Girard and Chabot over Ekblad and Hamilton.

You have to assume the Top 4 will chew up a ton of minutes.

Yup, really strong top 4. I like the top pairing especially. Give the 2nd pairing more offensive time and Makar on PP1

The bottom pair are a reliable and solid pairing, Nurse has been one of the best 5 v 5 point producing D man over the last 3 or so seasons. His size, skating ability, and skill combination defensively on big ice will need to be leaned on.

He’ll be asked to play more of a defensive shutdown role and PK on this team which he is capable of doing. Doughty shows up in big moments as well with lots of solid international experience. I like that as a bottom pairing.

That’s the best D pairings and combination of skillset I could think of put together mix, I think someone above posted that exact top 6 as well.

It's hard to argue with that 6. I prefer Doughty get more minutes, just from a leadership / big game perspective, but who do you reduce in the Top 4?

Doughty in reduced minutes and lesser matchups might be a big advantage to him as well.

He’s always stepped up in big moments for Canada, he’s a lock for me. But you’re right, who is he bumping out of the top 4 on the right side? Certainly not Pietro and Makar who are locked in on the right side, assuming health.

When you're right, you're right.
