I'd be fine with Marner being on the team. Plenty of guys with mediocre playoff records have thrived on Team Canada when they are asked to play down the line-up and aren't expected to one of the drivers (Duchene 2014 & 2016, Sharks line 2010, Nash 2010 & 2014, Lindros 2002, etc...)

Edit: What I came here to say originally though was that it's nice to have both Price and Fleury providing strong options in net.

In my opinion this is by far the best news so far from these playoffs.

We need to squeeze out one more Olympics from the old guard in net. Sad but true.
If I've learned anything about watching best-on-best hockey over the past few decades it's that depth beyond your team that you ice for the tournament doesn't matter that much. Who was Hasek's back-up in 1998? All Canada needs in Beijing in 1 or 2 goalies playing well; the rest is gravy.

The nice things about goalies is you only need one.

Those players filled a need whether is was power forward, a scorer or physical size. Marner fills none of these needs - we have enough play makers to choke a horse.

As a Leaf fan, I'm still bitter (it's only been 20 hours), and I've had enough of Marner.

I agree that Marner's skill set should be compared against that of other Team Canada wingers. Overall, the management team will decide what they need from support players. I'm arguing that his playoff performances shouldn't exclude him from the team. There will be plenty of veteran players and leaders on the team to absorb the pressure.

True.

The 5 players I don't want on Team Canada (from most avoidable to least)...

Marner: He's hot garbage in big games.

Tavares: Too old, too slow, too injury prone.

Hamilton:
I have never been a fan but, TBH, I haven't seen much of him in recent years.

Stamkos:
NEVER performs in BIG games.

Morgan Reilly:
We can do better.

Tavares will be viewed as an option because he's good at faceoffs, good around the net and can hold his own defensively. All qualities Team Canada likes.

I have Stamkos on PP2 because this team does not have a lot of snipers as is. MacKinnon can play the role on PP1.

Hamilton will not be Team Canada's favorite, but he's been one of the top 5 defensemen in the NHL the past two seasons.

Marner.........I'm somewhat with you. My issue is not his scoring ability in big games so much as his awful choke plays that have hurt the team directly. After game 7, I'm starting to have doubts of his placement on the team.

I agree about the Snipers. It's too bad. Hopefully we will get some young ones in the coming years.

If Marner makes the team, he can't be doing what he did last night that led to the Gallagher goal.

Can you imagine him doing that in an elimination game, and it is Kucherov or Kane who gets the puck and comes into our zone like that?

I can't see another goalie not stopping that puck thought.

That is true. But the quality of shooter will be greater than Gallagher.

I don't want to give Kucherov, Kane, Matthews, or Ovechkin a free pass right into the offensive zone to let a shot go from the high-slot.

If we're down a goal in the Gold Medal Game, Marner will be a liability, guaranteed. He'll make thing worse, not better.

It's not like we are lacking play makers. Just leave him home.

The question you have to ask is do his mistakes seem more harmless on a stacked team that can cover up for him? Is he worth the high-risk high reward?

I am phrasing that as a question because I don't know myself. He has done wonders to put himself in the conversation of playing himself OFF this team with his postseason. A lot of things to unpack with him. He hasn't done himself any favours.

From what I see Barzal and Ekblad are most omitted players from the list of players that usually appears on projected rosters. I hope Seguin will start season hot and force his way into Olympic team.

You never know with Barzal. He has a shot. Seguin doesn't though. I think he is noticeably behind the likes of Tavares and Giroux who are longshots at best to make this team.

I still think Marner has a good chance to make it.

Rick Nash was a much worse playoff performer than Marner and that didn’t seem to bother Hockey Canada.

Rick Nash is one the greatest Team Canada performer's of all time. Marner doesn't belong in the same league as International version Rick Nash. He did it on all sides of the ice.

Nash's nhl game pales in comparison to his international game. He basically lived and waited to play for Canada.

Problem with Marner is in those tight games he will bring nothing on the other side of the puck. He's just so soft, and afraid of contact. But yah he definitely has a chance to make it and thrive depending on who he plays with.

Canada will miss those strong big forwards on the wings who can play any type of Hockey game, Staal, Carter, Nash, Marleau, Benn even Morrow.

One of the greatest ever? He had 7 points in 19 Olympic Games. That’s nothing spectacular.

The point is that Canada hasn’t always just picked playoff performers.

The U.S. has scary good goaltending. Russia (or whatever they're calling themselves now) too. Price is an obvious pick, and Fleury has clearly put himself back in the conversation. I do worry that Price will be 34 and Fleury 37 in 2022 (wasn't he there in 2010 when Brodeur imploded and Luongo almost gave away the game in the third?). I am no Binnington fan -- I think he had one above-average playoff before falling back to earth -- and, frankly, Canada's goaltending depth is worrisome. Do you take a young guy like Mackenzie Blackwood as your third? A serviceable vet like Darcy Kuemper, Cam Talbot, or Jake Allen? Who else is even worth looking at?

I'm not so sure that Canada's depth can make up for average goaltending anymore.
