Why didn’t Nash and Crosby play well together?

I believe Mackinnon and Crosby also had chemistry problems during the 2015 WC. Though, Mackinnon was quite young and not the player he is today

Nash, while more of a goal scorer than a playmaker throughout his career, needed the puck on his stick to drive offense, as did Crosby. Nash wasn't a pure shooter or triggerman like, say, Stamkos, who only needed the puck on his stick an instant before burying it. Rather, Nash used his speed and strength coming down the wing to gain offensive zone entry and drive to the net. That's something that Crosby is also really, really good at, while being a significantly better puck distributor than Nash from the center position, so their skillsets didn't mesh well. For all of Nash's strengths (I was a fan of his game when he was in his prime), he didn't have the hockey IQ to play off of someone like Crosby and was better deployed as the offensive engine on his line. Crosby and Bergeron have always played well together (their 2014 semifinal game vs. the U.S. is a masterpiece), and while Kunitz was a poor selection he mostly had the good sense to know what his limited role was on that line...which was to help maintain possession and look to find the open seams in the offensive zone.

For someone who has watched Colorado basically zero, can someone with more views report on the chances/progress of Girard and Toews? Personally despite being from my town I can’t see Girard making it, but I can see Toews playing a Vlasic-type role

He wont make it, (or be really close) but I think Brendan Gallagher could be a great fit on the bottom line, again he wont make it, but I would love to see it as a biased Habs fan.

Who's going to be the Brendan Morrow 2010 of this team?

The player who will go out and just be ruthless in every facet of the game. Man he was a monster, in that historic game vs Russia he would fly into every Russian player at his top speed.

I hope this team can also play the aggressive game, because skill alone won't win a Gold medal.
If you are looking for another Morrow to play the same game, then answer isn't Hyman.

The answer is Jamie Benn. More offensive upside to Hyman and has played on Team Canada the highest stage multiple times.

I think Benn is perceived as too old and slow by this point though.

After rewatching 2015 WC gold medal game, Canada played great with Mike Smith in net. The WC are not the Olympics, but you don’t need a Vezina trophy winner in net to win.

That is true.

But that 2015 World Championships Team Canada was probably the most stacked World Championship team in a very long time.

By personal safety, I meant more along the lines of improper detention/imprisonment/held hostage for political purposes.

Well you have a point. The two Michaels are still imprisoned about 900 days or so and counting in China. This might lead to a World Cup in 2022.

Not bad, and you know what the more I think about it the more it makes sense to have McDavid and MacKinnon broken up. That is just staggering talent down the middle with a McDavid, Crosby and then MacKinnon line. Honestly, how do you survive that? Then when you think you are dodging a bullet you deal with Scheifele's line which would be a checking sort of line but still very dangerously offensively. I like Stamkos on the wing there as he translates well there. Point is just too good to not have on this team so he's on the wing too. Some centres out of position but I feel Canada has that all of the time. Marner is the X factor here though. I think you have to have him on the wing somewhere because he is a natural right winger. It is just hard to see who to take off. I guess you could say that Marner fits in well with McDavid but then you are putting Stamkos as a 13th forward. All I can say is wow! This is a team where you are pretty much having the likes of Marner or Stamkos among others as potential 13th forwards. Someone like Tavares doesn't fit here anymore and neither does Giroux I don't think. That's some serious talent.

I'm liking Rielly in there on defense though. Over Toews or Girard for sure. I don't mind Nurse in there actually. But I am thinking we should add Letang in there somewhere. Even if it isn't on the right side. The good news is 6 out of the top 10 scoring defensemen are Canadian. That doesn't mean Tyson Barrie is making this team, but it goes to show you that there are lots of options. However, someone like Girard is small and I think we have to remember to get some beef in there on defense as well. I like Parayko as well. I'm liking everything else though, even in net. We'll be fine there. Heck, it's Carey Price, he doesn't have to be his 2015 version of himself for us to win this thing.

My defense is a bit different:
Letang-Pietrangelo
Nurse-Doughty
Rielly-Makar
Parayko-Hamilton

I say the heck with the whole right hand shot obsession. We didn't have a single right handed shot on the 1976 Canada Cup defense and that is considered probably the best ever. Too many good guys to leave off in my opinion. I put Hamilton on there for sheer curiousity. I don't like him a lot, but he's big, mobile and I can overlook that idea that a couple of years back he avoided going into a corner - quite obviously - with Ovechkin and gave up a crucial playoff goal. I am fine with Theodore in there on defense as well. But there has to be a nice blend.

No f****** way. Wilson isn't disciplined enough for the international game and he'll cost us, especially with IIHF refereeing. Besides, we're Canada, we don't build teams with specific players because we're worried about other countries...other teams should be worried about playing us.

They are worried about us. We have the potential to have three top flight centres down the middle that will be impossible to defend in McDavid, Crosby and MacKinnon. I like all three of them on separate lines and then maybe team them up for the power play or something. That'll be heavenly to watch and intimidating for everyone else. Which line do you check and focus on?

That being said, the thing that makes Canada so great is that they have always been able to thrive at every sort of game that gets thrown at them. You need to know that your team can win a game 9-3 but also 2-1 if they have to when the checking gets tighter. Can they win a physical match up if they have to? That's why you want a bit of muscle on defense instead of just picking all of the top scorers among defensemen. There is definitely players with lots of size on the Canadian defense. Pietrangelo, Nurse, Ekblad, Hamilton, Parayko are all at least 6'4". These are potential picks. There are lots of mobile puck guys. Makar, Doughty, Rielly, Letang, etc. I like Letang on here, he's had a couple of different years where he definitely would have been an asset on the team in the past. He wouldn't be out of place.

not much change over the last week or so other than Pietrangelo comes off IR and Stamkos go on IR.

And keep your eyes on Jamie Drysdale. He's moving up my Team Canada depth charts. I think he may have a shot next year.

I think that the bigger issue with China is the many, many Uighurs being held in concentration camps for what they are basically calling re-education, at least for me. I know people from that group and the stories they get are fairly inhumane. I do not expect any kind of boycott though.

I'm curious about Hockey Canada's summer plans. I'd like to nominate Cape Breton as host of an evaluation camp. Basically no one has had covid to this point and there is a ton of golf, as Crosby and MacKinnon can attest to.

Is there a ball hockey arena though?

Yes. Local elementary school gyms and church halls have doubles as ball hockey arenas for eons. Bases covered.

It worked well. No team was better prepared for Sochi than we were. I only criticize Hockey Canada when their stunts don't work....you know, like the player of the game superman capes at the Ufa 2013 World Juniors.

It was a fairly creative idea and a good one given the insurance costs. I don't know that Canada is going to have a better prepared hockey team for a very long time. Very experienced and successful international coach in Babcock, with Hitchcock right there as an assistant. Quality general manager with international experience in Yzerman. Even Krueger being available to help out coming off his successful run coaching Switzerland for years. Things came a long way since 1998.
