Does anyone know why every nation had to announce 3 players to the team so early and why they had to make a 55 player long list. Like hypothetically speaking lets say someone not on the long list for Canada starts putting up 2 points per game from now until the deadline to select the team, since they're not on the long list that team Canada submitted does that mean they can't be chosen. Also, lets say Crosby puts up a 0.1 points per game (hypothetically speaking) and isn't the player he used to be, since he was named as one of the three players does he still make it. I just find it strange that they would limit their options this much when the tournament is still a decent ways out.

Players not on the long list cannot be selected according to everything I've read discussing this. Crosby, Pietrangelo, and McDavid are on the team, if healthy, regardless of their performance.

The long list of players is submitted so they can be subjected to drug testing in advance of the Olympics.

I wonder if Batherson is getting looks. 16 pts in 14 games. He’s the fourth highest scoring Canadian so far, tied with Duchene and Bertuzzi.
Is drake batherson having a nice season so far? Absolutely. Will drake batherson who plays center, make team Canada who is stacked at center? Not bloody likely. If drake batherson is one of the 12 starting forwards for team Canada, I’ll eat my hat!

Pretty good list. I can’t fault you on your top 12 forwards or top 3 goalies. I wonder if Dubois makes it. He’s a big body and scores goals. Team Canada in the past like these types of players. Your top 6 defence is sound other than pelech not being in your top 6. For me, pelech is a lock to be a top 6 d on team Canada. He’s the best defensive d man from canada. And team Canada tend not to leave these types of players off the team.

I sure hope some serious scouting is done on PLD. He has been an absolute 2-way monster for the Jets this season. They don't need to waste their time on Schiefele. His play since 17-18 has been pathetic. Adam Oates has turned him into a prima donna only concerned with cookies not playing the right way. Sooner we trade him the better. Too bad because he use to be such a good player

Not that I expect him to make it, but he is a right winger not a centre.

Does anyone have a link to the long list of 56? I find plenty of articles talking about it, but nothing that actually shows the list.

Will Duchene make it in the first game's roster? He has looked good lately.

Duchene, along with Hall and Seguin + a few others I'm forgetting all missed their Olympic window in 2018. They can send their cards of appreciation to Gary at NHL HQ in NYNY.

if Duchene still desires some international action, he's more than welcome to join Team Canada going to the WHC in May.

Getzlaf for sure aint on that 55-list but he looks damn good at the moment, could be a decent option for the 4th line C / 13th forward.

I know its not gonna happen, but they brought Thornton to the World Cup so who knows

Yeah unfortunately in these types of tournaments (similar to how in the playoffs a premium is placed on physicality) speed is a skill that takes on more importance with the skill level being higher, and Getzlaf is… not that

Pretty sure it's not been made public in anyway yet. So - just speculation.

Someone above said Duchene - and imo, he wouldn't have made that initial list, so he's a non-starter

So many question marks on Carey Price.

Hasek in 98 was better, but I may have Price in 2014 as the second best olympic performance ever by a goalie. And he's coming off insane playoffs, at the top of his game. But - injury/surgery and obviously he took a leave to start season and hasn't played yet.

Carey Price on Team Canada at/near top of his game? Canada wins the gold, for sure (unless a monumental performance/upset by someone else)
Carey Price not on Team Canada? Well - Canada are probably still favorites, but it's a complete game changer. No high quality starters of his caliber, nor close.

I’m getting 1998 Nagano vibes. And I’m seeing some similarities with what 2022 team Canada could be to that 1998 team Canada.

1998 had 2 generational centers, one past his prime, one in his prime in Gretzky and Lindros.
2022 has Crosby and mcdavid.

1998 had 34 yr old Patrick Roy. I know there are question marks on price but if he is indeed the starter, he is 34 yrs old.

1998 top 2 d men were aging but yet still elite Bourque 36 yrs old and Al Maccinnis 34. 2022 will see Pieterangelo 31 and possibly and likely if healthy doughty 31.

1998 Marc Crawford was the head coach, a guy who won his first cup 2 yrs pryer with an offensive loaded team in Colorado. Cooper coming off his first back to back cups with a Tampa team loaded with offensive talent.

1998 had its undersized winger in Theoren fleury. 2022 might have its fleury comparable in Mitch money Marner.

1998 third best center was Colorado’s joe sakic at the age of 28. Nate Mackinnon is the 3rd best center on 2022 Team Canada at 26.

2022 Team Canada likely has 2 way beasts R.OReilly and S.Couturier. In 1998 they had 2 way beasts K.Primeau and R.Brindamour.

2022 Team Canada may have Hyman as a gritty goal scorer who can check.
1998 had LW Shayne Corson as a comparison.

2022 will likely have 29 yr old RW 2 way offensive threat Mark Stone. In 1998 RW Mark Recchi was also 29.

now I understand Hyman and doughty are questionable at making the team, just used it for comparisons as the team hasn’t been finalized. But I just wanted to point out we might have another Nagano disaster on our hands. Hope I’m wrong.

Tom Wilson seriously impressive last night against Pittsburgh, I can’t believe I’m saying this but he wouldn’t look at of place on this team; I still wouldn’t have him there since he’s vulnerable to mad outbursts but he’s certainly lodged his claim…. For how lauded they Tkachuk bothers are he has higher point totals than them (granted he plays with better players) and plays a similar style

I like Batherson, but I somewhat doubt that he was on the longlist. Could be wrong. I'd like to see what Batherson can do in a leading role at the IIHF WC, and he will likely get a chance soon enough. Wouldn't really consider Batherson for a spot at the moment but who knows.

Dubois has been good all around this year and brings a unique element among Canadian forwards. I hope that he is a viable candidate right now.

The long lists are not going to be released, apparently that was at the request of the NHL and NHLPA. I'd guess that it's still pretty widely known though.

Duchene got his turn in 2014 and played decently filling in for Tavares. I liked that he was rewarded as a loyal Hockey Canada soldier. Guys like Hall, Seguin, and probably Giroux, did miss their chance in 2018. I figure that the 2018 team that never was would have been a very good offensive, skating team. Missed opportunity thanks to the IOC and NHL.

Well, you’re certainly wrong about MacKinnon being the third best Center.
