Just took a look at the 2014 roster and boy oh boy is this roster gonna be multitudes better than that.
Marleau
Sharp
Hamhuis
Nash
Carter
Kunitz
Toews
Benn

To name a few who in their absolute primes would not make this years team.

Toews and Benn would absolutely make this year's team if they were in their primes, and both would upgrade the roster. I'd also take Carter in his prime over someone like Stone or Scheifele to play on the right side.

I wouldn't touch Kunitz or Sharp. Marleau, Nash and Hamhuis would be on the bubble, though I will say the 2014 team's defense group will probably prove to be superior to that of the 2022 team and prime Hamhuis was seriously underrated and would likely be in the conversation for a depth role at LHS D (depending on how much management values maintaining that balance). Marleau and Nash would be the ones out-competed by better players (including Benn and Carter).

I have no idea what you mean by this. Are you implying a Toronto bias, because I don't see it in his picks.
Marner and Rielly, no Tavares, no off the board Leafs picks. This isn't anything crazy

I guess we differ on Rielly's status on a best-on-best Team Canada.

It's like he started to do a full write-up for his choices, then gave up halfway through writing the article.

Writes out the forwards and why he'd pick them, then just lists all the defenseman without any real explanation for why and what pairings.

It's like he got the job 10 minutes before the deadline, then had to submit the article before he was halfway through it.

His 3 goalies, ones not playing at all, and the other 2 have sucked donkey balls

Play MAF while putting an electronic devise around his neck. Then, every time he leaves his crease or tries to shoot the puck, SHOCK him.

Most of all, pray he doesn't do something stupid and he finally makes up for 2004.

Disagree on some of those guys, but in particular why would you include Toews and Benn on a list of "questionable" players? In 2014, Toews was coming off a Selke winning season in 2013, and followed it up with a top 3 Selke season the following year. Benn was arguably the premiere powerforward in the league at that point in time, and went on to win the Art Ross the following season.

The only guy on that list that's probably questionable is Kunitz, and it's obvious why he was selected (not to mention he had a career year that year).

I personally don't think he should be there, but I don't think it's insane or obviously biased to have him there.

He left Doughty off. He left Chabot off. He lists Hamilton as an on the bubble. He also lists 4 LD despite the fact Canada's actually deeper at RD and probably the extra will end up being a RD.

So it does seem somewhat Toronto-centric considering those guys should probably be ahead of Rielly, and that's not even mentioning guys like Letang, Parayko or Nurse.

Every one of those guys other than Kunitz and Sharp would comfortably make this team at their best, and Sharp would get consideration. Kunitz was a bad pick but everyone knows why he was there.

Prime Jonathan Toews would've been one of the first 3 players named to the Team 2 weeks ago and would likely end up leading Canadian forwards in ice time.

As others have said, Benn would also easily make the team as a power forward who can score and also a natural LW'er (Canada is historically weak at LW).

Nash and Carter were perfect depth forwards. Nash was always impactful for Canada.

Toews most certainly would have been in the Top 3.

Good post.

It's passable but Canada should have better goaltenders. 20 years ago Canada could have named Roy, Brodeur, Belfour, Joseph, Theodore, and Burke or Luongo as six goaltenders. Really interested in hearing what forwards and defencemen were longlisted.

Not Girard! As for the goalies as long as Binnington has a pulse he'll make the team. He might even start depending on what happens with Price.

Agreed. Unfortunately heading into these Olympics, Canada is at a low-water mark for defenseman and especially for goaltenders. Luckily, we are sending one of our most talented forward groups ever and all of our closest competitors have holes in their lineups too.

The group of defencemen is below average relative to expectations but it also may look better in retrospect. Goaltending is an issue has persisted for years now Canada has gotten fairly good goaltending at the WJC since 2012 but there are very few Canadian big time goaltending prospects. Not too many who burst out of almost nowhere (like a Belfour or Joseph) and stick around either. Good forward group, solid if unspectacular defencemen, now hopefully a goaltender emerges and has a particularly strong start to the year.

Canada just needs someone to play average and they should be fine, they don’t need anyone to stand on their head, the forward group should be putting up at least 4 a game

You never know though going up against someone like Vasilevskiy, if he's feeling it we might need our goalie to stand on his head too.

Assuming he doesn't have to do any chin-ups, does Sam Bennett make the team?

He's on pace to score 82 goals.
