You're easily one of the eight biggest homers on this site, but that isn't a surprise either.
I don’t read many other forums other than the Avs, but Pierce is pretty fair when it comes to ripping on the Avs. For the amount of Avs posters on this board, he wouldn’t even be on the radar of homers.

That said, I don’t think there’s a single stat category Girard is top-10 in among Canadian defencemen. Combined with his size, it’s not surprising. There is no shame in not being selected to team Canada.

That’s the concerning thing for this upcoming tournament. Hockey Canada road the coat tails of Bergeron, Crosby, Getzlaf, perry, carter, toews, Keith, doughty, Weber and whoever else I forgot in 2010 and 2014. A lot of those players are no longer playing at that level anymore or they just are not in there prime anymore but still good. Yes we have mcdavid, mackinnon, Huberdeau and maybe barzal and marner make the team as well, but none of those guys have much of any international experience or much playoff experience (outside of barzal). It’s kind of changing of the guard, and I’m not the biggest mike Babcock fan, but he’s not there as well.

Also factor in team Canada does screw up and when they do, they really screw up like in Nagano and Turin Italy where they didn’t even medal in either tournament. I’m getting similar vibes from this upcoming tournament in China. Not because Canada doesn’t have a good team, they have the best team imo on paper. But like the above mentioned reasons, I won’t be surprised Canada loses to Russia or USA in the semis. I hope not, but it’s almost time for team Canada to have a bad tournament, and it only takes one game and your done.

I'm a bit surprised the GM would actually tell a player they're not going to be invited ahead of time. Figured it's more of a case of a GM simply naming a team, so anyone not invited kind of gets the hint.

On the plus side, McDavid, MacKinnon, Ekblad, Parayko, Coulturier and Scheifele all played on the U23 team at the world Cup. Without that team, many would not have had "international" experience.

What happened to Matt Murray?

I agree. Because of some poor drafts and the changing of the guard, this is the most vulnerable Canada's been in a long time. Having said that, 2026 could be GREAT !!!!!

My only current concern is the goaltending. If Canada gets the goaltending -- even middle of the road goaltending compared to the other teams -- I like our chances.

I should have rephrased from international experience to international success.

LOL! I wasn't trying to been snarky. :) I'm just saying we should be okay - although we both seem to feel :

1) We are due for a bad tournament;
2) We are vulnerable.
Oh I didn’t take it really as disrespectful, this is hfboards, trust me I’ve had a lot more aggrieved and confrontational replies to my posts then yours lol

and agreed on both your points. And in 2010 and 2014 we cheat the states in an overtime golden goal in 2010 and a 1-0 in 2014. It’s not like we’re beating the USA 5-1….

To be fair that 2014 1-0 game was the most dominate 1-0 game I have ever seen in my life. That team simply suffocated the opponent.

The rule of average has hardly ever caught up to the USA basketball team. They have dominated since nba players were allowed into the olympics and no one says they are due for a bad tournament. In addition, that's with lots of the best guys not wanting to play in the summer but wanting their vacation. Canada has always had their guys.

Gosh I wish there was a way I could ignore any post focused on Marner in this thread

Anyways

I like Girard and would be open to him making the team if he starts strong, but his playoffs against Vegas were horrible and that hurts him even if it is a small sample size. Do we know that anyone whose name was not submitted cannot make the team? It seems that way but I don't recall seeing it formally stated.

Let's be real here, Canada in hockey is not the equivalent f USA in basketball and hockey itself is not basketball. Canada always sends the most talented roster but not to the ridiculous degree USA does in basketball. Hockey is also a more random game than basketball is, which hurts a talented team. Teams don't win or lose because they are "due" though. Canada could be a huge favourite over any other nation and still lose the tournament half the time because that's the way things happen when you actually play the games.

That’s exactly it. A superstar can literally make your team in basketball from a pretender to a,contender, hockey it doesn’t work that way. Pucks are deflected and blocked, and things are done with a lot less control as opposed to basketball.

the guy with his basketball analogy is comparing apples to oranges and it’s a bad one at that.

Just took a look at the 2014 roster and boy oh boy is this roster gonna be multitudes better than that.
Marleau
Sharp
Hamhuis
Nash
Carter
Kunitz
Toews
Benn

To name a few who in their absolute primes would not make this years team.

But we did have Price in his prime, and we might not have him at all here. I also preferred out blueline back then.

And Kunitz wouldn't have made the team in 2014 either - if not for Crosby. Let's hope they don't try anything stupid like that again, that was classic Team Canada overthinking.

2018 would have been like a perfect combination of the 2014 and 2022 squad, I think we really missed out not getting to see that team.
