What should the Leafs do

We've already thrown away 5 years of the core in its prime, and short of a massive amount of luck, this year and the next as well. All the deadline trading that Dubas did gained us virtually nothing, and cost us prospects and picks.

If you accept that we are highly unlikely to win more than a round while JT is here, regardless of deadline deals, you can see my reluctance to throw away any more future on quick fixes.

If you don't accept that premise, then we can just disagree. But do you really think we can find enough good but unwanted talent for the little we have to offer, that will fix our D and G issues?

Tre will be an absolute genius if he can get anything at all for our second round picks for the next three years. We don't have any! Over the next three years, we have two first round picks, no seconds, three thirds, and two fourths. Dubas mortgaged the future for one playoff win. I'd rather Tre not make the same mistakes.
Ahhhhh Dubas, the gift that keeps giving and giving.

Did he say that or are you attempting to paraphrase? I have never heard him say that though when the Leafs were in the midst of a losing streak he said
"We’re halfway through the season now, 42 games in, I still have a lot of questions, quite honestly, about who is going to go out and who is going to get the job done."
Is that way you are referencing?
That’s probably the exact quote

I agree. I want no part of him for a 1st.

If he is still around 4-4.5 next year as a UFA I would seriously think about it.

He has been a lot healthier in Calgary than Vancouver.

2 year, maybe 3.
I would be fine with 2 years at that amount, if it was 3 I’d want the amount to be lower.

One thing worth considering is that there's a massive amount of parity this year, (even by modern NHL standards) especially in the east.

Really reinforces it's anyone's game once the post season starts.

Any small edge might matter, even if it's a middle of the lineup type addition
Parity is fine if everyone is good. Can you imagine how good others would have to play to carry Brodie to the Eastern final.

The anticipation of how badly they're gonna screw this up is killing me.

They've put themselves in a damned if you do, damned if you don't, situation. Half the fans are pushing to go all in. The other half have already given up.

It boggles my mind how many people are willing to throw in the towel on this season already.

A full one third of the fans want them to sell. The team isn't good enough and everyone is totally fine with that. Like they're sooooo gonna win the cup next year or something.

The standards for this team keep getting lower and lower.

At first it was "we're gonna win the cup". Then it became "we're gonna win a round". Now it's called "we're gonna make the playoffs".

They've proven their incompetence every time they've had a chance.
That's what 5 years of Kyle Dubas will do to a team. And people expect the new GM to right the ship in a few months. It's ridiculous. This will take a few years. At the very, very least, Tavares will need to be off the books.

I don’t expect him to trade to address all our problems. I expect the players and coaching staff to address most of their challenges. If you’re in the camp of these are all wasted years, then you may as well rebuild the whole thing. Tavares’ cap hit is a constraint for us next year, but it doesn't mean we can’t succeed.

Go after guys like Clutterbuck and Tanev, maybe even see if you can pry Cizikas out of the Islanders as he would greatly improve the 3C position for the playoffs. Nothing flashy about any of them, but I think people are over-estimating what and how much this team needs, and at the same time over-estimating the quality of the competition in the East. The Leafs aren't staring down prime McDavid or MacKinnon in the East. It's going to be a coin flip to see which team gets out of the East, and you never know if making one or two relatively minor acquisitions might be the ones that put you over the top. The Leafs couldn't have made the Lindholm deal, but for the relatively minimal outlay that guys like this would cost I don't see why you don't go for it.
Minimal outlay for Tanev? The Flames are likely looking for a 1st, and that should be a firm no thanks.

So why would you want to add? Fans are not "willing to throw in the towel". They just have had enough of adding at the TDL and seeing these guys disappoint. You claimed you were great, got the money, now get it done.

I was recalling Matty hugging his Dad after beating Tampa and thought that they thought the goal last year was to win a round. Having accomplished that, they mailed it in against Florida. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me 4,5,6 times, shame on me.

Contending for a Cup could be a reality in two yrs if they were to make wise decisions today.

Correction any line other than Matthew line which I agree for the most part with or without marner he’s strong

i talked especially in playoff... even matthews/nylander line when they started or played together was stick in their own zone... and probably why marner had been team high 47% of time on the ice on every leafs goal. Hes just the best leafs foward defensive side of the game and helped a lot D group on both part defensively and on transition( how many time did we saw marner came back lot and carry the puck in transition?)

Remember the "another case of Bud Light to the Maple Leafs locker room" after beating Tampa? That was our cup, knew we were in trouble there, pathetic mentality.

It didn't help that Treliving wasted a year of his own with all his shitty offseason signings too.

Touching up around the edges hadn't worked in seven years. Hurts even more that Leafs have been paying Cadillac prices for Yugo rentals. So hard to believe they still haven't learned it's either go big or go home.

I don't expect them to start making wise decisions any time soon.

In fact I expect just the opposite. A continuation of Treliving doing his best impression of Homer Simpson in a mutu crossing a tight rope. A balancing act of epic proportions with catastrophic results waiting should he fail.

I trust Homer more than I trust Brad.

To be fair, he needs more time to determine if he can build a winner here, but definitely not off to a good start. That is IF he even calls the shots, not out of the realm of possibility that he’s just Shanahan’s puppet?

I’m not sure I trust Tre either, but I’m guessing he is still evaluating what he has here. Hopefully this offseason will bring more clarity, or just more bs
I’d imagine we’ll have a good idea whether Tre will be a good GM or not by September. There needs to be a ton of changes to all positions if the Leafs truly want to contend for a cup. I reserve judgement on him until then……….

They should audition some smart, puck handling defender, who can get the puck to the forwards.

Perhaps on a ELSC.

See if they can find another forward with some skill and ability to put up points.
Some younger guy, maybe 24 on an easy contract that doesn't require going through waivers.
