What should the Leafs do

If they make a trade it has to be for a player with years left on the contract. They aren't a rental piece away from a cup, they are a miracle away from the cup sadly
Honestly not even sure a single miracle would be enough at this point.

Monohan just went for a 1st and 3rd and Dubas paid a 1st and 2nd for a bottom pair D last year so what's your definition of "shouldn't cost an arm a leg" ?

Bertuzzi could probably bring back one of the needs; the asking price for Tanev is reportedly the equivalent of a 2nd and he's likely not the only guy on the market for that range.

Not every tdl deal is going to involve a 1st +

Isn’t the deadline still a ways away?
March 8th. Just over 4 weeks. If there was ever a time to discuss moves or non-moves this is it.

I would like them to stand pat, unless they are able to make a move or two to strengthen the defensive core for years to come. No mercenaries please.

I would roll with this offensive group, for better or worse. Though the media likes to talk about how open the path to the cup is, I personally do not see the Leafs as one of the top contenders. But as they say, all you have to do is make it to the dance to have a chance.

The few assets that other teams would covet, I think I'd rather keep for now.

I'm with the stand pat crowd. Maybe some additional depth on D but only if it's real cheap.

Lots of guys on expiring contracts that can be replaced in the off season with proper planning

for me it depends on what the market dictates really, I would put guys like Brodie, Domi, Bertuzzi on the table to be traded but if I didn't receive at least a 2nd round pick for these guys or equivalent value in prospect I would keep them. might attempt to get a decent Dmen prospect in return for one. Samsonov is another guy I might move if there's any interest.

I would then look at maybe adding a depth piece on Defense and that's it. and when I say depth piece I mean moving like 5th rounder for a vet piece that can play incase of injury type of thing. not getting a top 4 guy. I wouldn't be willing to pay the price this season.

From the cup I’d say we’re

A coaching change
A locker room mentality change
2 Top 4 D
A Top 6 C
And a Divine Intervention

Away.

if a ppg 2C is not enough, it will never be...

the only year leafs was looking like a serious contender was the only season last 4 Muzzin played..

you fix that hole and you fix a lot of other hole at the same time

Put me in the stand pat crowd, barring the ability to make some form of "permanent" change.

If you can get that ideal right shot defenceman who belongs in a top 4 with term, then yeah, you do that.

Even if you can get a guy who you think might be a decent #2 C or left winger, definitely worth pursuing... but you look at the crop of impending UFAs that are likely to be avaialble, and this team isn't 1-2 of those pieces away from a cup. '

We're also light on draft picks; so aren't really in a position to blow antoher 2-3 of them.

For once carry this team on your back.
If you can't then changes in the off season
Trade
JT - retain 3 mil will will get a return o
Marner - retain 3 mil we will get a better return

Um, you know JT and MM have NTCs right?

I have a feeling Marner may want out if we get out if we don't do well in the playoffs.
He is married now so his wife may not want all the attention

I still covet Tanev.

Maybe it's better to pursue in the offseason, but if you pair him with Rielly that is a pretty damn good 20-25 mins a night combo
Taney, when healthy, is still capable of playing as a top 2 dman. However, with his style of play coupled with his age, it has lead to him being injured a fair amount. Add to that he will be a UFA at season’s end, and what will he be wanting in terms of length and amount in his next contract? Isn’t Calgary looking to get a 1st for him? If so, I do not want him.

The coach said he doesn’t know who he can trust and they still don’t know what their lines are.

This has only gone on for 5 yrs.

that'll be a massive change from our last 5 yrs , then again we also don't have any 2nds for the next 3 yrs either

here's hoping 3rd picks are the new 1st rd and people value our nothing prospects like slick Nick Abruzzese as 2nd rounders

I'm mostly Team Stand Pat at this point. Maybe pick up a cheap penalty killer or two if available, but not convinced this season is an "all in" hand...

If we're able to find the right player we can extend or that has some term I'm not totally against moving assets, but rentals should be off the table for sure.

That said, I'm not opposed to selling if we drop.

We need:

Top 4 RD
Bottom pair D who kills penalties
3C
4th liner who kills penalties

I would sell and trade to make the team better. We aren't doing any of that and this team can't really do it because we hand out NMC for no real reason at all. Just a handcuffed team that overspends on talent causing it to lack depth.

Wonder if Saros is someone we target and go after. I get he’s had a down year but I have no doubt he’d bounce back on a better team.

To Toronto: Juuse Saros
To Naahville: Nick Robertson + Ilya Samsonov + TOR 1st Rounder

Some people may say that might not be enough but goalies have never gotten a HUGE return.

I like Woll but his injury history worries me. Doesn’t seem like someone you can rely on for long stretches.

Saros - Hildeby future tandem.

Don't think we can afford to stand pat and waste another prime Matthews year, you gotta try and get better. Ideally not a rental, but we should be looking to add. Goaltending is still a huge question mark, Jones/Samsonov are extremely inconsistent and Woll hurt.

My wish list would be Tanev + Markstrom or Fleury + high energy bottom 6 forward that finishes his checks. Not sure who who fits the description.
Honestly I was playing around on cap friendly...

We have no cap space and little to no high value assets

Cowan is our best asset and I dont want to deal him unless its for a Hagel type deal where you get 23-24 year old who you can extend 8 years who gives 60-70 pts

Minten value is a ~2nd, he hasnt had a good year in the WHL

Knies we arent looking to deal and even his value is lower now than 12 months

Robertsob similar, we arw trying to develope him inti a top 6 guy. To many injury issues with him in the past which hurts his value

Everyone else we have are sleeper prospects who are more valuable internally at this pt then on the market

Tverberg, Niemela, Greb, Chadwick. We are better off letting them play another year and see if they can take another 1 or 2 steps which helps them either be leaf players or high 2nd/low 1st level value pieces.

I think we should stand pat if we dont sell.

Tanev is a #4/5D and is similar to GIO when we got him. Dont thini he changes much for this team and would cist a 2nd + 3rd (so minten + 3rd or Niemela + 2 3rds). He likely extends if we trade for him but I dont think its worth making that type of move right now

This year and maybe next year are punts. You work with what you got and hope for the best. Team has 3 top 6 forwards (all three are superstars and top 25 players but still...)
