What should the Leafs do

Quite possibly one of the hottest takes I've read lols

He’s a 58 point player in the playoffs, so maybe a low end 2nd liner, but if we are all about offence we need a play driving Center, not a passenger who needs to be carried ever since coming here

He’s never had a dominant series, he’s never been a top 3 player in any of our series’s. He’s gotten away with it for some reason though, as Marner takes a brunt of the criticism

Need
# 1D
# 1G
# 2C
I think Rielly is a fine #1 dman, but we need much much better 2-4 dmen

Brodie is cooked
McCabe is doing well know but should be a bottom pairer
I don’t really know about Liljegren, he’s too inconsistent game to game, sometimes it looks like he is ready for top 4 and sometimes he’s an absolute trainwreck

If our dcore is like the following I think it’s solid

Rielly - #3dman
#2dman - Liljegren
McCabe - Benoit

Problem is if we can even afford that, I think the #3dman can be replaced by using brodies 5m on someone else but the #2 could be difficult

1G is gonna be difficult to find and afford
2C just isn’t happening until Tavares runs out

I'm fine with being a soft buyer for as long as the team remains in the playoff hunt (not willing to part with a 1st or the better prospects though if the best we can muster is a playoff start on the road). I also don't see the need or urgency to make any trades at the moment since we aren't firmly in a playoff spot to the same extent of a Vancouver or even a Winnipeg.

Standing pat doesn't doom the Leafs to being first-round fodder. Last time this franchise went on a long playoff run they did shit-f***ing all at the deadline in 2002, only adding Barasso as goalie insurance for a 4th and trading recently fired coach DJ Smith for another minor league player.

This team is so hot and cold I don't see them selling, but they really shouldn't be big buyers. Remember we got Bertuzzi and Domi in part because they performed so well in the playoffs. We could at least get in and see what this franchise can do. NHL playoffs can be so random.

As of now, I would buy but only a couple depth pieces. We are in win now mode, and I would try to help the guys as much as possible. But I certainly wouldn’t be looking to add major names and give up a lot.

The next few weeks could change things though. And you never know, maybe being the underdog works in our favor.

Need a 2 d and a 3d. Not trading away a 1st for one either, can’t trade any of the NMC’s, so draft and wait
At some point we need to draft d prospects .
You can't keep trading picks at the TDL and buying UFA's

These d prospects will take 3 to 5 yrs
Hope Chadwick is the first to join the big club in 3 yrs

Next year we will have to go the UFA route.

For once carry this team on your back.
If you can't then changes in the off season
Trade
JT - retain 3 mil will will get a return o
Marner - retain 3 mil we will get a better return
Except that both JT and Marner say no thank you, and thats that.

Compared to other teams we are not going to make it out of the first round.

We have regressed to the point where we need to get assets back in a big way.

Shit, the Canucks could win the cup this year.

What a bloody mess.

2 of the top 4-5 players on the team, including their 1 C are about to have career years. You don't sell when that's happening.

You find a way to bring in better support players. That potentially involves moving guys like Bertuzzi, Brodie out for different players.

They neer a #4 and another forward who can actually provide depth scoring. Shouldn't have to cost an arm and a leg to get that

Go after guys like Clutterbuck and Tanev, maybe even see if you can pry Cizikas out of the Islanders as he would greatly improve the 3C position for the playoffs. Nothing flashy about any of them, but I think people are over-estimating what and how much this team needs, and at the same time over-estimating the quality of the competition in the East. The Leafs aren't staring down prime McDavid or MacKinnon in the East. It's going to be a coin flip to see which team gets out of the East, and you never know if making one or two relatively minor acquisitions might be the ones that put you over the top. The Leafs couldn't have made the Lindholm deal, but for the relatively minimal outlay that guys like this would cost I don't see why you don't go for it.

A hope theh sell what they can and regroup next season, but who really cares if they once again blow their wad of trade deadline pick ups, this team is years away from playoff success……..

Monohan just went for a 1st and 3rd and Dubas paid a 1st and 2nd for a bottom pair D last year so what's your definition of "shouldn't cost an arm a leg" ?

  • Two mean physical stay at home defenders who can keep the front of our net clean and are big bone crunching hitters
  • New Head Coach
  • Two top 6 LW speedy snipers that are puck retrieval beasts..
  • Replacement for JT
  • Attitude, anger, a purpose, snarl

Someone who can play 2nd or 3rd line center and 2nd or 3rd pairing defence. Two names that come to mind would be Hayton and Walker. Wennberg and Borgen would be another option.

Stand pat is my expectation.

I wouldn't mind shuffling some pieces if we can to downgrade roster slots and acquire picks. Bertuzzi for a 1st or 2nd, then acquire a middle 6 scoring option for less. Retain on Brodie for a first, pickup a Schenn-esque D for a 3rd. Maybe grab a pick for Jones.

Doesn't feel like a year to be adding or acquiring. We overdid it on that last year and really it all boils down to the core anyways. We're not missing an obvious, single hole or two.
