I like JBB I wish we hired him instead of Marc Bergevin back in the days.
I mean, picks for us aren't really about drafting players. They've just been trade capital for about 5 or 7 years now. So the only risk in spending too many picks on one player is you won't have enough to spend on some other player, should he become available.
That's what made the jeannot trade so bad. Wasn't about losing prospects. In this trade, we get two assets, one of whom is proven in Seattle and one of whom is proven under Cooper. Expecting Gourde to have a McDonagh like return to prominence is probably expecting too much. But it feels like we spent the assets on the players we wanted here, and still have prospects to trade if the need arises next year, plus more picks. These players solidify weaknesses for us, and leave us with very few weaknesses remaining.
Did we overpay? Sure. Does it make sense in our situation? Absolutely.
First round picks are not an overpayment when we draft and develop players better then anyone in the league and not when your keeping a window open to win cups.
- tbay improving just adds more fuel to my fire for detroit not buying anything
- and i know a 4th isnt very valuable but it makes the fun of draft day funner , plus can be added to several other pix to move up

If they draft and develop players so well, why did they need to bring in Guentzel, Cirelli, Hagel, McDonagh, Paul, etc?
I rate Bjorkstrand as a very clear top-six guy. He's been chronically underrated his whole career.Sure, there's no point in using your picks to draft players who won't be able to contribute for another 5 years, at which point Tampa's D will likely prevent them from contending.
I don't care too much about the idea of "overpayment" in a vacuum. The question is, could Brisebois have used those assets to make a bigger improvement to the team? I'm not so sure: getting two good middle-6 guys who fit under the cap was always gonna be expensive. Though I do wonder if he should have targeted players with more size. That top 9 is amazing... but it's damn small.
Sorry, throw in Jeannot then.why did a top team need to trade for players? weird question…
also google cirelli
It's a high cost, but the market this TDL is heavily tilted for sellers.batshit levels of insane overpay but good on tampa for pushing the chips in
Agreed that it would he nice to get a little bigger, but really that ship might have sailed. But yeah, in general, I don't know that we could have addressed our depth issue better than this. We went from a really top-heavy team to a pretty well balanced team in one move.Sure, there's no point in using your picks to draft players who won't be able to contribute for another 5 years, at which point Tampa's D will likely prevent them from contending.

Totally lame return for Detroit. Yay. A 4th to help a divisional rival get better when they’re clinging to playoff hopes by their fingernails.
Hard to criticize too much when it's worked for them in the past. That's also code for "I won't be here to clean it up when the ship is sinking"
Yeah, I think thats pretty much JBB's philosophy. As a Canucks fan I'd trade that for 2 cups every single time. And they still might win another.

Would you want this and cup runs which translated into 2 cups and 3 finals in a row or keep these draft picks and maybe you get it?
Lol sure. Lord knows the number one problem facing the world right now is that 'job creators' (myth) aren't getting enough tax breaks.Vote different.
