This trade is not going to age well, though it's pretty bad already. When Brisebois is fired within the next year or two, this trade is going to be the one that is cited the most as to why.

This is a ridiculous overpay.

I can’t believe the delusional thought process of Tampa - - “hey he was good for us five years ago, let’s bring him back for another go-round”

Between Tampa and Florida, there’s going to be at least one extreme case of buyers remorse a few months from now.
Gourde was the throw-in here.

Fo

To be fair, the cup wins came before most of those picks were traded away.
We did similar trades to win the 2 cups. Coleman and goodrow deals were heavily criticized as overpays. We started doing this a while ago to get us in a better position come playoff time. Take risks and they don't always pay off but they have worked well for us with the teams we've iced.

We pay extra for good contracts. We rarely acquire pure rentals.

If BriseBois didn’t get fired for the catastrophic failure of Tanner Jeannot, I’m doubtful he’ll get fired for this debacle either.

That trade didn't work well but you can point to others that did and they resulted in cups. You don't fire someone who is willing to take risks and at the same time hits on most of them with ideal results. He will be gone one day but hes probably done all you can ask for a gm in a window like we've been.

I made a thread in IIRC October or November about how Tampa masterfully extended their window by bringing back McDonagh and acquiring Moser, Geekie, and Guentzel while punting on Sergachev and Stamkos.

Then you have the GM who believes in his core and will pay whatever it takes to get the player he wants.

Whatever you think of some of his moves (a lot of people like to dunk on the Jeannot acquisition), it's process over outcome.

And that process netted them Brandon Hagel for picks that likely won't play a big role in Chicago's future and have contributed to them being perhaps the most lost franchise in the league.

Tampa has a special core and an audacious GM.

I like this move for them a lot. They're one of my secondary favourite teams and have been for a long time. Love the way they play and love the way they're run.

Bjorkstrand exists

He was the main piece…. Y’all put too much stock in draft picks.

I'm not sure why anyone thinks this is a bad thing. Do you enjoy your teams never doing anything?

Tampa has been competing since 2011 and won 3 cups in 17 years. I'm good for life dawg, some people's grandpa's haven't seen their teams win.
Agree with your assessment but time is passing you by a bit because it's 3 cups in 21 years now.

Yes, we're all getting older.

People who think this is a bad trade for Tampa overvalue late firsts (common for HF).

For fun, here are the last 10 picks of a few drafts we're far enough away to evaluate:

2016

Julien Gauthier
German Rubtsov
Henrik Borgstrom
Max Jones
Riley Tufte
Tage Thomson
Brett Howden
Lucas Johansen
Trent Frederic
Sam Steel

2017

Kailer Yamamoto
PO Joseph
Kristian Vesalainen
Ryan Poehling
Jake Oettinger
Morgan Frost
Shane Bowers
Henri Jokiharju
Eeli Tolvanen
Klim Kostin

2018

K Andre Miller
Isac Lundestrom
Filip Johansson
Dominik Bokk
Jacob Bernard-Docker
Nicolas Beaudin
Nils Lundqvist
Rasmus Sandin
Joe Veleno
Alex Alexeyev

2019

Tobias Bjornfot
Simon Holmstrom
Philip Tomasino
Connor McMichael
Jakob Pelletier
Nolan Foote
Ryan Suzuki
Brayden Tracey
John Beecher
Ryan Johnson

In short, a lot of busts, a lot of warm bodies, a few useful players and maybe 2 guys who you can call star players. Out of 40 picks.

Given the choice between getting two of those guys at random, and getting Bjorkstrand at his current contract, who would you prefer? I take Bjorkstrand without thinking twice.

Me too. Bjorkstrand is approximately the kind of player you realistically expect out of the tail end of the first round in the first place anyway, so a team like the Bolts might as well trade it for someone who helps them now instead of waiting a few years to see if the pick develops into the kind of player that Bjorkstrand already is. Yes, there's the chance a late first round pick develops into a star, but that's counterbalanced by the chance that a late first round pick busts entirely instead, when analyzing the overall value of the asset.

This is the exact reason why this is a good trade for both teams.

Not every trade has a winner and a loser, sometimes both win and I firmly believe this is most likely the case here.

The Kraken don’t need a player like Bjorkstrand right now because the Kraken are NOT GOOD and probably won’t be soon, by then he’ll be on the downswing and we’ll be wanting a player like he WAS. I say that as a Kraken fan and a guy whose favorite player is Oliver Bjorkstrand and has been since I had season tickets for the Winterhawks when he played there.
