I mean, picks for us aren't really about drafting players. They've just been trade capital for about 5 or 7 years now. So the only risk in spending too many picks on one player is you won't have enough to spend on some other player, should he become available.

That's what made the jeannot trade so bad. Wasn't about losing prospects. In this trade, we get two assets, one of whom is proven in Seattle and one of whom is proven under Cooper. Expecting Gourde to have a McDonagh like return to prominence is probably expecting too much. But it feels like we spent the assets on the players we wanted here, and still have prospects to trade if the need arises next year, plus more picks. These players solidify weaknesses for us, and leave us with very few weaknesses remaining.

Did we overpay? Sure. Does it make sense in our situation? Absolutely.

Sure, there's no point in using your picks to draft players who won't be able to contribute for another 5 years, at which point Tampa's D will likely prevent them from contending.

I don't care too much about the idea of "overpayment" in a vacuum. The question is, could Brisebois have used those assets to make a bigger improvement to the team? I'm not so sure: getting two good middle-6 guys who fit under the cap was always gonna be expensive. Though I do wonder if he should have targeted players with more size. That top 9 is amazing... but it's damn small.

First round picks are not an overpayment when we draft and develop players better then anyone in the league and not when your keeping a window open to win cups.

If they draft and develop players so well, why did they need to bring in Guentzel, Hagel, McDonagh, Jeannot, Paul, etc?

- tbay improving just adds more fuel to my fire for detroit not buying anything
- and i know a 4th isnt very valuable but it makes the fun of draft day funner , plus can be added to several other pix to move up

no, its just another kick in the kahunas by Yzerman. I am starting to think he is handcuffed by Chris Illitch not wanting to spend money and keep the bottom line cozy.

To me it looks more like one 1st pick for this year of Bjorkstrand and another 1st for another year of his contract. Whatever else left is for retained Gourde.

I rate Bjorkstrand as a very clear top-six guy. He's been chronically underrated his whole career.

Size with Gourde is far from an issue. He's a warrior and plays with a ton of edge. I think TB of all teams know what they can get from him.

The picks are immaterial to TB. Hedman is 34. Their window is right now. Could they have gotten better pieces with the 1st +1st +2nd? Maybe? But I rate the guys they acquired very highly.

Agreed that it would he nice to get a little bigger, but really that ship might have sailed. But yeah, in general, I don't know that we could have addressed our depth issue better than this. We went from a really top-heavy team to a pretty well balanced team in one move.

I think we really, really wanted Tuch. But I don't think Buffalo has any interest in moving him.

batshit levels of insane overpay but good on tampa for pushing the chips in

This is a ridiculous overpay.

I can’t believe the delusional thought process of Tampa - - “hey he was good for us five years ago, let’s bring him back for another go-round”

Between Tampa and Florida, there’s going to be at least one extreme case of buyers remorse a few months from now.
