Ottawa Senators Reportedly Exploring Trade Options For Josh Norris Ahead of NHL Deadline

The Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli was on the <a rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/@CIHwWallaceandYork">Coming in Hot Podcast</a> on Monday morning to discuss the NHL trade deadline and the implications that it could have on the Ottawa Senators.

Graeme highlights a couple things here and on CIH this morning

the 2nd line particularly with Batherson playing with negative confidence has no one to transport the puck. He explores the idea of splitting up the top line
putting Norris with Tkachuk and moving Stutzle down ; given that Tkachuk has some ability to make possession zone entries. He also suggests that Norris could move to the wing.

These ideas have been thrown around here.

Right now with Batherson's game in the toilet (he doesn't slot anywhere well) our skill depth is really getting exposed.. Greig is not ready to be the transporter in the top 6. The one guy that isn't terrible at is Gregor but he isn't a top 6 player... Still he could be worth a try to combine with Norrris .. and switch out Perron.

We need adjustments.. As pointed out on CIH our shots against is no where near where it was when we were at the top of our game... Cousins helped the depth.
our 4th line is 2 parts AHL calibre players with Gregor. Maybe Batherson should ride down there till he shows a turn around.

I'd be sending Gaudette down for Ostapchuk yesterday

That's a good/great top 9. Not sure why coaching/management is so reticent to try Norris on Stützle's wing before exploring the trade market for him.

It's not like 7.95M is crippling and Norris is exactly what you'd want #18's winger to be. Fast, tenacious, deadly shot, decently big, defensively reponsible, etc.

Aside from his faceoffs prowess, Norris doesn't have the typical attributes of a center (puck carrying down the middle, passing, puck skills, making their wingers better, etc.). However, if he clicks with Stützle, he would go right back to 35-40 goals territory and his trade value would improve as a result, assuming management's still hellbent on trading him.

Selling low on him now (a la Chychrun) or God forbid, pulling the trigger on a negative value trade (a la M. Joseph) would be terrible for the assets depleted organization we already are and another blunder added to Staios' list of blunders.

No it’s not time right now. Off-season if you want a time

Also many here thought he was worth the money. And that was like…right before his injury which was not that many NHL games ago for Norris.

If your trust the surgeon then I don’t see how opinions can change

His role on the team has changed.

He’s not on the first unit of the PP anymore where it was once built around him and his shot. Pinto is a better player 5v5 at this point, so how long can you justify giving him worse linemates if/when Norris isn’t generating much?

I don’t actually want to see Norris traded at all, I’m disappointed that this is the direction they’re going in. But when you look at it logically, there are a lot of reasons it makes sense.

Sure. But not right now while we’re in the hunt for the playoffs. We are better with him right now.

Pinto plays well in the third line/second line step up role. And he plays well with third line types.

Full time second liner? I dono.

Next year we should be rolling with those three again. If pinto takes a big step then he will be due for a big raise and Norris can be moved to make room

I don’t think he’s getting moved at the deadline and I agree with that.

Norris only has 10 points 5 on 5 this season. The strength of his game is basically in all other situations - PK, PP, 4 on 4, 3 on 3, whatever. Pinto moving up to center Batherson and whoever is unlikely to produce inferior results 5 on 5. Giroux on the PP doesn’t seem to produce inferior results. Presumably if you get someone that can PK and play solid 5 on 5 minutes, you can sort of replace Norris by committee.

The downside is I don’t think this is his best, and we are trading someone with a skillset we need. His speed, shot, faceoff ability, defensive game are all areas that will be hurt by his absence.

But I don’t think it’s as simple as that. Because if Pinto surpasses him and he has less opportunity, his production could diminish and lower his value further. Or if he suffers more injuries some teams could think he’s injury prone in general, beyond the shoulder. So maybe trading him next season becomes less feasible. There is risk in trading him and risk in holding onto him, so it’s kind of a matter of pick your risk.

It's interesting how quickly things change around here, at the beginning of the season most were happy to have three good centres down the middle & now we are talking about trading one. For a team that people say lacks scoring he did put up 35 goals not that long ago. And as it has been pointed out it's all the other things he does so well that the coaching staff depends on. Giroux has been great at faceoffs for us & Norris has shown that he is equally as good & responsible at faceoffs something we will need more of when Giroux leaves. Norris does so many things that help teams win, he is a valuable player for Ottawa.

I like Yorkie...and I liked simmer. They're great easy to listen to.

Wallace is more whiny and irritable. He complains about everything while Yorkie just laughs it off.

People just want to see more offensive from him. Bigger numbers. More goals per game and more points per game. He gets paid 8m for offense.


I don't think anyone has a problem with his defensive game or anything else. Even physicality is good.


That being said, I wouldn't explore trading him...any guy we get will probably be worse...and to replace his potential offense would probably cost just as much in free agency, if not more...and you might be stuck with some 30+ year old who can't even skate in the league by the time his contract is up...like Perron.

I would just keep him, but try to utilize him better. Maybe wing? Maybe get him to use his one timer on the pp again?

I'm not sure why we don't have Norris on the right wing clapping bombs...pinto or batherson in the bumper position (pinto got a few one timer goals in the high slot on the pp)

Maybe having 2 one timer options and alternating them would keep the other team guessing? Right now, we seem to have no one timer threat despite having 2 guys with good one timers...

I agree, but he is another guy that has come off a couple of surgeries & is trying to get back into it which takes time sometimes more than a season. I expect that if he does stay healthy that he could have a come back yr next yr, he has all the tools to do it.

He probably is more valuable to the coaches to play centre than wing, but I'm not against trying it if it protects his shoulder. Speaking from experience, I feel for these guys when they get older with all these injuries arthritis is going to be painful for them, no wonder so many get hooked on pain killers. Bad backs, bad knees, bad wrists, bad shoulders ... ouch.
 
Trade Norris it means 8 m cap space, you can add two good third liner for this money, or maybe 1 good 1-2 liner, lot of option, so trade Norris and add nothing, of course it will be dumb move.

the sens dont need 3rd liners. counting tonight he has 6 points and is a +6 in his last 5 games. He seems to have found his groove the last few weeks.

+5 spoke too soon lol
