RD Zayne Parekh - Saginaw Spirit, OHL (2024, 9th, CGY)

So because he joined Bobby Orr in junior it means he will be Bobby Orr in the NHL?

DeAngelo is roughly a top 2 defenseman scorer for a draft. Unless you suggest that Parekh will translate into like the best or at least one of the best scorers in the NHL for a defenseman, DeAngelo is a much more accurate comparison. Maybe you don’t like DeAngelo personally, but show some more respect to that Parekh hasn’t accomplished an ounce of what DeAngelo has (of course no one expects a D+1 player to accomplish more than a 29 year old, but you claimed to the contrary).
This Parekh/DeAngelo comparison seems like a really weird hill to die on IMO, but you do you man. I get their both 9th OVA picks, but that doesn't necessarily mean that much.

The fact of the matter is Parekh is doing something very special this year in the OHL, and I'm very excited to see what he goes on to be.

I didn't think he could score more than he already was, but the dude has really hit the NoS in these last few games.

The whole thing is, DeAngelo was not a 9th OV pick. He was picked 19th. He's comparing a 19th to a 9th.

Out of all defencemen that can be used for comparison, comparing Parekh to Deangelo sure smells like someone flailing and trying to throw something against the wall to see if it triggers anyone. I don't see a passable argument against this summation at this point.

Parekh is an absolute monster right now in the OHL. I think he is done with the OHL now, and will graduate to the NHL. I can see him playing 6th/7th minutes.

Flames will have 9 games to gauge where he is at. If he is physically not ready for the NHL, then send him back to the OHL. If he is, then put him on the bottom pairing and shelter him a bit, plus give him PP time. Start the year by saying he will get around half the games. If he shows he is ready to be an everyday NHL'er, then play him every day. Seems like a simple solution to me. Excited to see how he ends up in 3-4 years from now. Might be a superstar, might not be. Right now, he is tracking to be an absolute superstar, so hopefully he continues to develop towards that spectrum. The more superstars in the NHL, the more entertaining games are.

Exactly! At the end of the day all of this is pure speculation and anything can happen. We can only evaluate where a player is at now and how he is tracking. There can be no denying that Parekh is tracking towards possibly being a superstar offensive player. Proof is in the stats. To me though, more than that I go by the eye test and Parekh absolutely looks like he could reach Hughes/Makar level.

I drafted Makar in my fantasy hockey team right after the draft and held him for 2 years which is pretty unheard of in my pool. I watched him very closely over the 2 years in college and was pretty sure he would be the number 1 offensive dman in the NHL in a few years and he is. I see the same potential in Parekh. Overall, I don't think he will be as good a player, but his offensive skills are certainly tracking to potentially reach Hughes Makar level.

Kid is only 19 years old and has plenty of time to get stronger and learn defense. I live in Vancouver and Hughes was downright awful for 2 years in the NHL before he started to figure it out. Now he is arguably the best overall dman in the NHL.

Maybe I'm wrong, but Parekh's "arrogance" reminds me more of Matthew Tkachuk's swagger, confidence and love for the game than ADA. If true, that excites me. We need more characters like that in the league. Guys that you love on your team, even if they go a bit too far at times. I always get a chuckle at shoot outs or OT when they pan to the bench and you see Matty Tkachuk just all hyped up and wishing his team mate(s) on the ice good vibes.

ADA is the opposite. ADA is basically in the same realm of Avery for a guy many others didn't like having him on their team.

But what also bugs me is the lack of decent style comparable for Parekh in the last 10 ish pages or so. Is he THAT unique in play style?

Ellis' name comes up as one of the last time a damn scored 100 points, but no comparisons. Makar/Hughes as NHL ceiling? But not exactly a style comparable. ADA and Merkley being shot down as bad comparable. Many mentions he's NOT Dickenson.... etc. Basically just a lot of mentions of what he's not and lots of mentions of the shadows he's chasing, but I still don't have a great clue what he himself is. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Comparables are bad. He is what he is. There are enough reports and video out there of him that anyone can find out what he is without getting a lazy comparison that doesn't really cover things.

He's got great agility/mobility. Good defender on the rush but needs work on being a defender in his own end. Can get knocked around at times. Will need to get stronger. Great at getting the puck up ice. Manipulates defenders in the O zone to either get passing lanes open or get a good shot off. Future PP QB. Gets under opponents skin but can take it too far at times. Someone other teams hate but you love to have.

Whatever person or amalgamation of people that is, fill in whatever names.

Yeah, I understand and I agree they're lazy at times. I still like style comparable because it gives insight into the weaknesses and ideas on what the player may need to work on while developing. I agree I don't like style comparable for strengths at times.

Flames have had other guys like this in the past in Poirier and Kylington, so trying to figure out the different types of "strong offensive instincts, needs to figure out how to play away from puck in whatever zones" to focus what to look at as a nerd, is useful to me.

On/off ice attitude feels like Matthew Tkachuk to me. Can grate your teammates, but not in ways that make own team feel insulted or slighted.

Ozone stylistically aiming for like Hughes/Makar right now? (a little more manipulative than someone like a Bouchard?). Albeit he stands more vertical that most other players, nearly in a comical way.

Neutral zone = ? Most of what I saw is moving puck up ice or getting puck at blue line. Not sure of how well he dominates this zone.

Dzone = Gostisbehere right now? But hoping it develops to be better than that?

For NZ and DZ, I'm thinking his aim is to develop where he can do passes up ice while also rushing up to engage in the play at the NHL level. If he can get it to a Kylington (pre-mental health)/Brodie/Hamilton level, I think he's a surefire superstar. If not at that level, still very good.

I'm definitely going to be digging up more highlights, but any way to better focus the observations would be helpful.

For funsies, the Flames might be going after Isa Parekh as a FA. TBH, with our RD pipeline being so thin after Parkeh and Brewstewicsz and with his bro already ELC with us, it's a move that could make sense for everyone involved.

His splits by month are hilarious.
October: 1.20 point per game
November: 1.70 point per game
December: 1.22 point per game
January: 2.10 point per game

When he’s cold he’s one of the best offensive defenseman in the league, when he’s hot he outproduces the elite forwards.
Just a casual update to this:
October •1.20 point per game
November •1.70 point per game
December •1.22 point per game
January •2.10 point per game
February •2.21 point per game
And for fun:
March •3.5 point per game

He is legitimately one of the top 5-10 best offensive prospects in hockey at this point forwards or defense. He is now 8th across the entire CHL in points, and that’s amongst all players, not just defenseman. His production would make him one of the best forward prospects in hockey honestly.

Putting it in writing that I think, to nobody's surprise, that he will have a slow first year or two then explode in the NHL. He'll be given a hard time on here by some posters trying to say "I told you so" prematurely.

A bit of a result of the Jackson Lacombe conversation
