Look at all of our non 1st round guys that contribute or have in the past. We've made some great late round picks. Seems odd we no longer believe in the draft. I guess our draft guys will twiddle their thumbs.

So either a bidding war, where JBB added a few more picks

Or

A Hagel situation where the team didn't really want to trade him but the offer was (obviously) too good to pass up

When did this org no longer value picks?

Point? 3rd kuch 2nd Colton 4th

We've drafted value in later rounds. You need draft picks in order to do that. We are looking at a scorched earth version of win now. We will be basement dwellers for years

At first it looks really bad but when you dig deeper it's much more acceptable. Jeannot is the kinda forward that we've been seeking for some time and one that's value is more evident in the postseason. The price is high but in reality most of the picks won't be much, maybe a warm body kinda like what Foote is as well. Would have been nice to have kept maybe a 4th or something so we could use it to add another depth piece or even use it to dump Myers in the summer to save a few more bucks but I'm sure BriseBois will figure it out.

Another thing that I think BriseBois was thinking in this move is that we've sucked at drafting lately, so let someone else draft and develop with our picks and we'll buy them back when they're where we want them. In the last 10 drafts, not including the most recent, we have only Vasilevskiy, Point, Cirelli, Colton and Perbix to show for it. Sure we traded picks and players for others but of our own picks that's all we got in 10 years.

If you look at guys still in the system it isn't pretty, Koepke has fallen off, Fortier isn't showing anything special, Finley and Thompson are having just ok rookie years, Goncalves is looking alright but don't see the goal scoring ability to be a top 6 player, Howard is a bit underwhelming. There's nothing there that excites you one bit. The time is now, there's no help on the way.

I don't disagree but would add that niko huuhtanen is a stud. He was a 7th round pick.

Yeah...total scorched earth. For another cup? Yes...sure. But the orgs future after these guys is looking at 32nd if no other teams are added.
Idk if you saw, but with the addition of Paul, Hagel and Jeannot we are also getting yougerish players, that still have lots to give.
This isn't a short sighted thing, they are doing whatever it takes to maximize our window with this core. What happens in 6 years will be fine, we can go through a rebuild. But this game is played to win Cups, not to collect the most lottery tickets

Dude, you need to look at the list of players we have locked up long term and their age. If we lock up 2 or all of Hagel, Colton, Jeannot then we're still stacked for the next 5+ years.

That's fair. I just think if we paid less and got rentals in the past we wouldn't have a roster foundation to work with at all, and we'd have several holes to fill. I prefer doing this over making the Savard trade again.

I really don't know what the plan is for our defense though. That part is concerning.
Nobody disagrees that we are ok with paying more for long term players. But an entire draft class? That really handcuffs us

He is but I don't know what his intentions are going forward. He went back to Finland and is playing pro over there. He could stay there a few more years before he comes over, similar to Groshev. So unless he plans on coming back next summer I would have reservations about when we might expect him to being a potential piece we could add.

Jbb doesnt draft as well as Yzerman. He's better at trades though.

Locked up long term:

Sergachev - 24 years old
Point - 26
Cirelli - 25
Paul - 27
Hagel - 24
Colton - 26
Jeannot - 25
Vasilevskiy - 28
Cernak - 25
Kucherov - 29

Bolts are gonna be just fine for a LONG time.

He’s a RFA watch this summer JBB gets him signed for 6-7 years for 2.5 to 3.0 AVV
Unless he performs like he did last season, that is anything but a steal of a deal. Fair contract.

I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes more than that, that he becomes a 15-20 goalscorer.

Interesting that JBB brought up the Gourde line in his presser. It's kinda weird to see your GM bring up players from the past that are no longer on your team. Pundits wanted to harp on the loss of this trio excessively last year. I'm sure it'll be about McDonagh this time. But such is life in the NHL. Every year is a new year, a new team, and it's very hard to keep the same players, or even get the same results from them. That said he is getting to the heart of what we lost when those 3 players left.

Something that sticks out to me comparing the 2020 and 2021 Cups teams to the 2022 finals team was the first twos ability to wear teams down physically. A lot of that is attributed to Coleman and Goodrow who led the way in hits in both the 2020 and 2021 runs. Forechecking masters, and just frustrating to play against. The 2022 team found a way to win and advance, but it was a different way. For example in our sweep of Florida we put on a defensive clinic, but we paid a price to do it that way. You do what you gotta do. And so with the loss of Coleman, Goodrow, and now Palat, who was also top 5 in hits for us in those Cup wins, how do you replace some of that? Hopefully that's where Tanner Jeannot can come in, impose on people, and make life hard.
