Writing on the wall for Colton? That return screams big extension and a fixture in the top 6. They ain't gonna pay Ross $3+million for 12 minutes a game
writing on the wall for Killorn

It's 5 picks + Foote, who is likely valued as around a 3rd.

I mean, hey, we will hope to enjoy it, but wow.
tbh we don't get a 3rd for Cal Foote. Take the glasses off

Maybe JB thinks the way to create cap space is to shoot our draft picks out a firehose. Jeannot could be exactly what we need on third line, but the picks we've been sending out three years is really setting us up for an extended down period.

I'd say we still need another upgrade on the fourth line, we should only be icing one of Perry, Maroon and Bellemare - they've not been near the level they were last year. I'd sit one of them for Namesy, as unspectacular as he has been.
Same! Doubt it happens unfortunately

Now that ive had time to digest this move, i really like this and dont think its as much of an overpay as everyone thinks. Preds wanted 2 1sts for him and he probably wasnt really available. Foote is worth a 4th or 5th at best, the 2nd next year and 3-5 this year are about the value of a late first this year considering they would all be late in the rounds, so in hindsight we gave up 2 1sts and a depth dman that couldnt figure it out on a team that has needed a RHD for the longest time. Jeannot is gonna be a threat with Paul and Colton and i believe he will get back to 20ish goals and close to 40 points again, especially if he gets PP time as the net front presence. The deal will be even better if he signs for anything less than 2m for more than 3 years

This will not end well. Essentially two firsts and a load for a guy that is redundant to guys currently on the roster. Right now the picks do not matter. But at some point players on this roster is going to need to be replaced. There is little to nothing in the system to do so. The danger is the roster will get filled by overpaying UFA’s.
Here's the thing, by the time we stink enough to actually need draft picks to fill the roster we might as well tank all the way. Then we're more likely to get guys that can step right in rather than projects that take several years to bear fruit.

I understand your logic and if you are ok with the return the Bolts got for Foote and 5 picks then ok. What I think happened is we just got a bigger version of Ross Colton. A guy we would really like to play up in the top 6 but we Coop just can not make it happen.

I am not saying Jeannot has no value he does but for the ticket price there are other guys out there we could have gotten to bring that 3rd cup. Many thought that Kane was that guy and for two firsts and the rest paid in this deal Kane could have been had, unless he just said no will I go there and try to win a cup. Now he’s a pure rental no chance we could have signed him , I get it.

Look at the past though what we paid for Coleman and Goody was less in assets.

If Jeannot does not become a 20- 50 guy we lost this trade.

i dont believe we traded for him to be in the top six, he is there to make us tougher on the bottom six and PK, and chip in some points where he can.

he will take someone's spot this year (hopefully belle) and then a spot in the bottom six next year when we lose killorn etc.

and once again, we paid extra for a guy that will fit into our extremely tight cap window.

That's true, but it's forgetting the fact that we still need assets to maintain some sense of roster flexibility. For instance, we literally have nothing left from this year's draft to improve this year's team. And we have already dipped into the pot for the next two years too.

I don't know how many more of these kinds of moves we'll have to make moving forward. As it stands, this is the team for the foreseeable future:

Hagel - Point - Kucherov
Jeannot - Stamkos - Colton
X - Cirelli - Paul
Maroon - X - X

Hedman - Cernak
Sergachev - Perbix
X - X

Vasilevskiy
X

There's 6 spots that we have to fill, maybe cheap UFAs and our existing prospects will be enough. There are definitely upgrades we could make, but I think this is the best we can do with our cap structure. If we decide to kick the can one year further, we can do one more of these deals and fill another spot.

Jack Finley could be a 4th line center for us next year.

There are always moves to make. We are never gonna be okay with standing pat while all the teams around us are loading up. This move limits our ability to go and grab a defenseman when the need arises, or whatever else. We spent ALL the assets at once.

We best be ready to stand pat.for two years anyway.

That's fair. I just think if we paid less and got rentals in the past we wouldn't have a roster foundation to work with at all, and we'd have several holes to fill. I prefer doing this over making the Savard trade again.

I really don't know what the plan is for our defense though. That part is concerning.

inb4 Cooper doesn’t even play him because he doesn’t want to bench any of the old guys

This is like a CHL trade. Get a guy for 5 picks.

It's not super tough to trade for picks, though. Do we care too much about the 3rd, 4th, and 5th? Probably not. Only because Al Murray and buddies are absolute fire with later picks.
At least in a CHL traded you're getting star player. This is just something else.
